Do you believe people need religion or do you believe religion is detrimental to society?

I don't think people need it; I'm perfectly happy without it. It's not a necessity, there are only 4 necessities, Food, Water, Shelter, and Clothing.

I believe that it's a want. And to me it's something that you choose yourself.

It does however have a large effect on some people's minds in order to make them irrational on some subjects.

Have you ever read Brave New World? There's an argument in there about religion not being necessary that I found really interesting.

But to answer your question, I'm not really sure. I can see both sides of the argument.

I know plenty of people that are very religious and find comfort in their beliefs. They're also genuinely good people who try to help the world.

But I also have a friend who is VERY religious to the point of extremism. She's said some really horrible stuff about homosexuality, etc. and is very judgmental to me and my friends as well as complete strangers. I think if religion is taken to that level where it's judgmental and cruel, that's too far.

Nowadays, there is no need for organized religion. Science has taken the place of religion on explaining the universe and everything around it. Modern medicine has taken the place of faith healing and hoodoo. Our advancements in mental health conditions have taken the place of claiming people are possessed.

Many people do still want religion, but as a society, religion is not needed.

To say that all people need religion is objective... well at least my answer is. But there are minds who are contingent on an outside set of beliefs in order to agree upon how they should conduct their lives every day. There are societies that center around a certain philosophy to define their actions-- that in itself can be considered a religion.

I don't think it's needed, but I can see how it can be helpful for certain people as a source of strength and guidance.

I wonder how many wars, murders, slavery, misogyny and oppression would have been avoided had religion never gotten a major foothold in society...

Honestly, knowing the human condition, if there was no religion, human beings still perpetrate those acts and they would just find other reasons to justify them.

There is no right or wrong answer.

Some people do need religion and only see their life's purpose as doing all the things the Bible says to do in an effort to get into Heaven. Without religion they are lost and will probably spiral out of control.

Other people can find meaning and happiness in their life without it.

People don't need religion anymore. The rise of religion among humans was unavoidable because, before the birth of modern science, it tried to explain the world and the universe to people and, before the birth of modern forms of government, it gave people laws to follow and punishments to avoid. However, now we have science and a secular government. Religion is useless now. I won't deny that some people actually do good because of religion, but people can do good even without religion telling them they have to do good to get to Heaven, reincarnate in the body of a better human being or reach Nirvana.
