P101 China's current top 11 lineup turns conventional gg standards on its head

Here I thought IOI was such a wide diversity of looks and personalities, China elevated it to a different ballpark.

Starting out easy, Yang Chaoyue. Conventional in terms of visuals, nonconventional due to her skill level. Many comparisons have been made to Sohye, but other than the being the popular F rank trainee, not many other parallels.

Ranking: 4 -> 3 -> 3 -> 4 -> 2 -> 2 -> 9

Half Thai half Chinese, Sunnee with short hair and tomboy style to a T. Common first reactions: is this an all girls program? There've been similar tomboy style idols like Ella from S.H.E and Amber of fx, but still non-conventional look for a female idol.

Ranking: 6 -> 7 -> 7 -> 8 -> 7 -> 8 -> 11

Cool girl Yamy with aggressively small eyes. By China's standards her look is nothing special, but her confidence gives her big points.

Ranking: 1 -> 2 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> 4 -> 6

Gao Qiuzi, chubby meme queen who makes people laugh even when she doesn't do anything. On stage she'll surprise you though with the talent she has to back herself up.

Ranking: 21 -> 18 -> 20 -> 13 -> 11 -> 11 -> 8

start from 4:14 - 5:26

Wangju in many aspects the exact opposite of Chinese beauty standards, tanned and not stick skinny. At the start of the show had to compete for a spot to even get on 101, was saved from elimination by Yamy in a later episode, and shot to overwhelming popularity after she questioned why contestants who are pretty but not talented so easily gain the love of viewers but she is unable to.

Ranking: 94 -> 90 -> 55 -> 36 -> 23 -> 2

"You don't have to put a ring on me. I can buy my own (bling bling). Free your mind fight your fight. Cold moonlight shines on my warrior coat. With a gorgeous attitude, my life is in my own hands.“

Special mention to Re Yina (eliminated) who also has an especially unique look.

Oh and original nonconventional gg representatives, Sunshine who brought a lot of initial attention to the show but dropped out after ep 1

I'm all for an unconventional girl group, because there are too many conventional ones and they bore me to death. I'm rooting for all of them, even Chaoyue.

To an outsider, Re Yina indeed looks different, but there are over 11 million people in China who look just like her.

Find it super cool that not just one or two, but all of these girls are really popular and supported. I can not even imagine that could be a possibility in Korea. Personally am rooting for Sunnee and Yamy. Qiuzi is hilarious too and I would enjoy seeing her in the final group.

Noooooo! What did her company do?

Pulled out one of the girls to go do a drama, they fought over contract obligations. The rest of the girls from the company got significantly less screen time afterwards. Sunnee's fans have also been complaining that the amount of votes she received in the latest round doesn't reflect how much they've spent.

That’s it? Sounds like Tencent is being salty

Def salty, but on the other hand her company was an idiot to go against a company like tencent with so much clout.

Tencent was actively pushing Sunnee too during the first two episodes and gave her tons of screentime, so doubly idiotic of them to piss Tencent off since they were being very supportive at first.

Where do you know Sunnee from?

A’N’D, and Taiwanese dramas. Angel and Devil (didn’t finish because subs was off,) and Perverted Bodyguard.

Mamamoo

Yeah, Mamamoo definitely stands apart from the girl group norm, it did take some time before they really got popular though. I'm not sure more than one could have made top 11 of a P101 type show, possibly only Solar who is the most conventional visually.

Sunnee was getting pushed so much at first, felt like a sure bet for final group, strong contender for center. If only her company knew better, Sunnee wouldn't be having such a difficult time now, and more of the other company trainees would have lasted longer (although already they did really well despite Tencent's efforts).

Gao Qiuzi is actually an amazing singer - think you should add that. People find her reverse charm very likable.

It's double edged sword to choose talent over visual for idol groups, judge can push talent but in the end fans is the one who will spend money to buy albums, so it's good if in the end fans can also support them.

Wang Ju is a model recruiter who knows the image industry inside out. If you watched her skit at the end of episode seven where she fires through five model poses in rapid succession then you know what type of person she is.

She is NOT an unskilled Idol-aspirant like Chaoyue. Wang Ju is a skilled and high-power practitioner from another image profession (fashion modeling) who is using the idol stage not really trying to be part of it.

Also the young Wang Ju was total run-of-the-mill East Asian ulzzang before going Nicki Minaj.

I really thought that Re Yina with her striking super model looks, great height and Caucasian vibe (encased in Chinese language and mannerism) would have been the FAR better unconventional GG member. She also had the raw talent to be placed in A at one point.

I mean look at these! A missed opportunity for Asian idol pop, tbh.
