HBO releases first details on Game Of Thrones spin-off set in Age Of Heroes

HBO have released the first details on one of five Game Of Thrones prequel spin-offs in the pipeline. The network announced on Friday (June 8) they had commissioned a pilot for an untitled series from George RR Martin and Kick Ass screenwriter Jane Goldman, which will chart the Age Of Heroes. The official description reads: ‘Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game Of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age Of Heroes into its darkest hour.

‘And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.’ Goldman is set to act as showrunner on the series, with Martin acting as executive producer along with Daniel Zelman and Game Of Thrones producer Vince Gerardis. The Age Of Heroes, in GOT lore, began with the pact which brought about peace between the First Men and the Children Of The Forest at the end of the Dawn Age.

GAME OF THRONES: THE AGE OF HEROES OF THE SPINOFF SERIES EXPLAINED

Game of Thrones may be entering its final season, but we've hardly seen the last of Westeros on HBO.

The network has ordered a pilot for one of the five (!) GoT spinoffs in development. This offshoot will be a prequel, exploring the downfall of the so-called "Age of Heroes" some 10,000 years before the events of the current series.

HBO's official logline for the new series reads: "Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know."

While that doesn't tell us many details about the project, the books and the show have shed just enough light on the history of Westeros that we have some idea of what to expect. Scroll down to find out which characters and conflicts this prequel series might explore.

The Time Period

The Age of Heroes covers a very broad period of time in the Game of Thrones universe. It began roughly 10,000 years in the past, when an event called The Pact resulted in an alliance between the First Men and the Children of the Forest. This age lasted for about 4,000 years until the Andal Invasion, when the Andals invaded from Essos and conquered most of Westeros. Based on the logline saying the series will follow "the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour," we can assume that it will take place around the time that the Andals invade Westeros.

One of the big questions surrounding this series is just how much of that time period it's intended to cover. Will we see a comprehensive look at this era, with the show bouncing around different points in this 4,000 year range? Or will the series pick a specific conflict around which to build?

The second option seems more likely, especially given that the Age of Heroes includes one of the most significant conflicts in the Game of Thrones universe - the Long Night. Unfolding 8,000 years before the events of the current series, the Long Night came when the White Walkers first marched on Westeros during a winter that lasted for decades. Humanity was nearly extinguished during this war, but it also allowed new heroes to rise up and earn their place in history and legend.

The Origins of House Stark and House Lannister

The Age of Heroes is also a time when the powerful houses that dominate the political structure of modern Westeros first came about. House Stark traces its lineage to a man named Bran the Builder (the man for whom Bran Stark is named). Bran the Builder is famed for having constructed many of the most impressive structures in Westeros, including Winterfell and the Wall itself. In fact, he's so famous within the history of Game of Thrones that we absolutely expect he'll be a key character in this new series.

House Lannister, meanwhile, started with Lann the Clever, a cunning trickster who managed to cheat House Casterly out of their ancestral home, Casterly Rock. It seems likely the series will explore exactly how that feat happened.

Both characters seem like logical focal points given how much Game of Thrones has focused on the Stark and Lannister families. However, there are plenty of other major characters worth spotlighting during this period, including Garth Greenhand (a man who brought agriculture to Westeros and fathered so many children that pretty much everyone in Westeros is related to him), The Grey King (the original king of the Ironborn), and Durran Godsgrief, the creator of the mighty fortress Storm's End, the ancestral seat of power for the Baratheons.

The Children of the Forest and the White Walkers

Game of Thrones lore has established that the White Walkers were created by the Children of the Forest to protect them from the First Men, and that the Walkers eventually broke free and became an existential threat to both groups. We've seen glimpses of the White Walkers' origins in recent Game of Thrones episodes, and it seems all but certain that this series will delve deeper into that story and the true relationship between the Walkers and the Children of the Forest. Even HBO's description for the series mentions "the true origin of the white walkers."

We could also see the origin of the Night's King. According to the books, the undead tyrant was once a Commander of the Night's Watch who fell in love with a White Walker and sacrificed his soul. This prequel series could be an interesting chance to learn about the man who became one of the most feared villains in Game of Thrones lore.

More Political Intrigue

One of the hallmarks of Game of Thrones has been the never-ending web of political intrigue and back-stabbery unfolding in Westeros. This is a series where dozens of families are constantly warring and scheming against one another, all with the goal of increasing their power and getting a little closer to the Iron Throne.

would have loved the show to focus on nymeria and the rhoyne personally, but there was no was they would have gone with that over the Long Night.

I'm down for this, interested in them talking about secrets of the east because I'm trying to see Asshai or Yi Ti.

actually i bet they will, especially with the five forts over there that seem to have a similar purpose to the wall (possibly also white walker-related)
