Trump Kim summit: North Korean leader arrives in Singapore

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has arrived in Singapore for a scheduled summit with US President Donald Trump.

The meeting - the first between a leader from the North and a sitting US president - will take place on Tuesday.

Mr Trump described it as a "one-time shot" at peace and said the two were in "unknown territory".

President Trump will arrive later on Sunday. The US hopes the summit will kick-start a process that eventually sees Mr Kim give up nuclear weapons.

The two leaders have had an extraordinary up-and-down relationship over the past 18 months, trading insults and threatening war before abruptly changing tack and moving towards a face-to-face meeting.

Trump is offering a lot of concessions with very little in return (normalization of bilateral relations, reduced military co-operation and training with SK in exchange for less denuclearization than the Iran deal). I hope in the actual talks Kim is willing to be more generous, buuuuut I have my doubts.

I expect Trump to give a ton of concessions for a nice big belly hugging photoshoot.

That’s what Obama and his predecessors would have done. A professional negotiator like Trump is used to dealing with dishonest characters like Kim, and won’t accept any deal that doesn’t give him exactly what he wants.

I expect the immediate post-summit headlines to be along the lines of “Trump Throws Temper Tantrum - Walks Away From Chance At World Peace†because the media doesn’t understand how negotiations like this work, either.

Any success will not be evident until six months to a year after the summit.

North Korea has always wanted to have a meeting with the US. But the US would have been too stringent on them. With Trump you have a guy that just wants to feed his own ego and enrich his family's businesses. So big photoshoot for the first part and China has been buttering up Trump already on the 2nd part (his daughter's business trademarks in China, 500 million in help to Trump's Indonesia project). Trump wanted to pull troops from South Korea but Kelly stopped him. So he's already keen to lessening US power in Asia.
