No Mercy Episode 1: Review

 

The main points discussed in this review will highlight the best and worst parts of the episode.

 

Hyorin: "...If you don't have the talent, you don't deserve the luck." 

 

1. Ranking System: I have seen quite a few people call Starships' ranking system 'cruel', 'heartless', 'wicked' and just 'downright mean'. While it can be argued that all of these statements are true, it is not less mean that what some of us fans, have said about other idol group members who can't sing, rap, dance or do their "job". Kim Shi Dae, noticed early on in his agency's start that he wanted to produce groups and solos that could be boasted about. At Starship all you have is your skill. By removing their names, only their skill is in the competition, and your skill and how well you have fostered it will allow you to rank accordingly. Ranking the trainees from #1-#12 is the best way to make them realize that (a) you are either the best or the worst, (b) what you think is your best may not be good enough and © the only way to maintain your position or to rise is through hard work. Starship has also seen members of their own girl group, get harsh criticism for not living up to expectations. It is possible that they are trying to spare their new group of such criticism. At Starship, they can't guarantee you a big fan base at debut, what they can give you though, is public recognition through your skills that will possibly lead to a fan base. 

 

2. Bias, Focus, Screen Time: Yes i saw it, you saw it. It seems Starship is playing favorites. Are they really though? The first episode was heavily focused on Shownu and Jooheon, with sprinkles of an introduction of the other trainees and the judges. It may seem like bias is at play, but i see it as a good marketing strategy. Including Shownu's past allows the viewers to understand his desperation for wanting to debut, his connection to Hyorin (and her obvious anger at fellow judge Rhymer for questioning Shownu's talent), it also sets up a chance for him to build a fan base of his own (while simultaneously brining attention to the other trainees and the show) whether it is through his connections (Got7 +JYP), his talents or plain old pity. JooHeon on the other hand, has somewhat proven his own worth as a trainee and rapper, having featured on Mad Clown's Fighting Money and having a judge join mainly because of his participation. It also shows a clear contrast between vocalist and rapper, and highlights a fight for supremacy and #1 that will no doubt trickle down the line of rappers and vocalists on either side. Hopefully, by episode 2, things will have evened out allowing the other trainees to showcase their skills and their own stories and thirst for wanting to debut. 

 

3. Regress or Progress/Idol or Artist: As stated, at Starship, your skill decides your worth to the company. In an interview from earlier this year, Starship stated that they wanted their idols to be more like artists. No company wants to move backward and in so doing at Starship, they will try to find trainees that possess skills that will make them standout form the pack. They already have some of the best performers: performers who can sing and dance, hit high notes while upside down (Jeongmin of Boyfriend during Witch live stages) and even their performers who are less savvy, are still more practiced than many. It makes sense then, that even if all 12 trainees are extremely talented, that they will debut the most talented of the lot. You also have to factor in that the new boy group will be under their X label, which is more artist than idol, (think Mad Clown, Jung Gi Go, Joo Young). 

 

Conclusion: Is it a good first episode? Yes definitely, but their is room for improvement which is hopefully shown in episode 2. It will be interesting to see how they fight to rise and who will break and crack under the pressure. It's not just about debuting, to these trainees if they don't debut now, it might mean that they will be cut from Starship for good (Starship did not guarantee that they will keep these trainees). It means going back to the cutting board, getting remolded, basically years of hard work and the result is that you aren't good enough...not yet anyway. Not for Starship at least.

What do u guys think of the trainees so far?

For me i think no1 and 8 are the best so far. Wonho is hood but his choice of song didnt work out for him, just like no.9.

I thoght yonho was a vocal?! He doesnt seem like a rapper. Anyways he wasnt that good compared to gun and no.2

So far iam kinda disappointed, i thought we would have an outstanding vocal from the 12 but they are just good. Even if u excluded Hyolyn, soyu and kwill, non of them seem as good as hyunseong or even joengmin. Iam still witing for no.12 hopefully he wont disappoint.

Its hard find some outstanding male vocalist, in kpop we only have Kyuhyun and GO who are at K.Will/Hyorin lvl.

 

 

Kihyun seems nervous here. Lets see how he does next mission (anyway they already eliminating people next week. Starship has NO CHILL). Also he conveys the emotions beautifully. For a trainee/rookie his skills are great. We are comparing them to people that have been in the industry for years and have had the time to sing a variety of songs in different situations and build their skills. Give him two years, he will out sing the majority of them.

Finally a group CF. I dont know if they had any before but it's about time. Hopefully, this will lead to more CF's for them and hopefully the twins get some popularity and public recognition (although their screen time is small) so that they can get a few CF's. I am not worried about them alone getting popular and the group not getting popular as Starship has a way of bringing individual popularity back to the group.
