Since the beginning of her career, Grimes’ Claire Boucher has cited Korea’s slick, visually-stunning pop as a key influence on her own work. Her 2011 self-directed video for “
,†with its scenes of Boucher dancing with nine other women, was inspired by K-pop aesthetics, and she likened her steel drum-driven Blood Diamonds collaboration “
†to “a K-pop version of ‘We Found Love’ by Rihanna.†So it seems inevitable that Boucher’s ear would turn to the Korean 12-piece Loona, whose members have been releasing some of the past years’
K-pop music, as soloists and as sub-units.

On “love4eva,†new sub-group Loona yyxy teams up with Grimes to tap into a bright strain of K-pop that brings to mind the late 2000s and early ’10s music of groups like Girls’ Generation and After School. The song starts with a spoken-word intro by Grimes, with her treated vocals recalling the slightly creepy tones of ASMR tutorials, before blooming into a light, synth-driven confection, powered by zippy keys and iridescent-sounding electronics produced by E-Tribe and BADD.

Loona yyxy’s four members are vocally dexterous amid those textures, with additional harmonies provided by Grimes. Lyrics, sung almost entirely in Korean, capture the furtive thrill of dating in the social media age. “I’ll peek at your timeline and check your story,†sings Chuu, coyly, as sounds bleep and whirr. “You won’t know that you’re my crush.†In the chorus, the members unite to sing starry-eyed declarations—“From now on, I only see you, love4evaâ€â€”before an intense EDM breakdown pitch-shifts their vocals and splinters them to shards. The result is an addictive song that honors K-pop signatures while offering a new point of view on tried-and-tested sounds. This week, monolithic Korean boy band BTS earned the No. 1 album in the U.S., indicating that Western ears are opening up to K-pop as never before. “Love4eva†couldn’t have come at a better moment.

Oh wow QUEENS get that western recognition!!

the song is a mediocre rehash of Gee (which was already mediocre to begin with)

loona has done better. pitchfork is being too nice on these kpop reviews.

OR (this is gonna sound super crazy but just hear me out)

people have different taste than you and do actually like the song?

They've reviewed others?

yea just search their site. the most recent was bts' album and they've done some reviews in prior years as well.

from the site that gave ed sheeran 2.9 (and it was deserved), they're being way too lenient with kpop releases.

They bodied ed Sheeran .... and I'mma be quiet and say I agree because some songs they are giving credit too aren't to far off from what they bodied ed for

Tea. The fact they called this the "most immaculate K-pop music"...this is hyperbole to the max.

Actually I feel like pitchfork has been a mess with their reviews especially this year

Invasion of Privacy an 8.7 yet Dirty Computer a 7.7?

Cardi B can barely rap and nothing of her album is entirely groundbreaking to warrant an 8.7

I kind of agree they were lenient about BTS' album, it was a 6.5 at best. But this is just a review for a song, they're not giving LOONA a BNM. They're not over complimenting this song, they're just basically telling us what's happening in the song with a few positive connotations.

Pitchfork peaked with the Divide roast.

They've always been too lenient towards Internet "niche" phenomenons. Just remember the Cupcakke gassing up. Suburban Billyburg colonizers wanna be special so bad lmao.

They always rate rap very high.

The song is fine but

Pitchfork is a terrible reviewer lol

Even if s/he bashed the song to shreds no one should care

S/he writes like the most special snowflake of all special snowflakes

Reading this gave me migraine/nausea

Most sane pop fans think s/he is a joke anyways

Damn, that BTS review really has people bitter. Amusing.

I know right. It was a good album, it deserved it's high rating. Especially when you compare it to recent western pop releases.

OT: Congrats on Loona getting a pitchfork review (they probably only reviewed it cause of Grimes it seems though)
