Can BTS really have the best of both worlds?

I have seen a few comments saying that its not important for BTS to have English lyrics in their songs and they should continue singing in Korean in the West, but I disagree.

I assume some of us (who don't know Korean) are smart enough to look up translated versions of their songs so its not a big deal...but their situation is different now. They are not just catering towards fans, the general public also has their attention. I'm just worried that their music won't be taken as seriously as it should, since they wouldn't bother looking up the lyrics. They have already had to change some parts of Fake Love not to "offend" anyone, they shouldn't have to, but its clear that they are targeting the US market. If they didn't care about that, they wouldn't have changed it.

I think eventually they will have to do more English songs, maybe through collaborations like they did with Mic Drop or solos. Its not ideal, but actually it is the best way for the group to grow in the US market, otherwise as I have seen so far, the general public seem to mainly know that they have a huge fanbase, but not really understanding why. BTS should be known for their music as well...not just the fandom.

I think its going to be difficult for them to maintain "Kpop" status. I'm not sure how BigHit want to develop BTS from now on in the long-term...

if they do this they would be doing exactly what the other groups did and failed

the key to bts' success in america is not targeting the us market at all

I understand what you mean, its what makes them unique in the market. I still think doing more collabs on the side will help them though.

The fact that they are singing in KOREAN and their KOREAN album is no 1 on billboard charts is what makes them special...They are still kpop you know...

But if they release some singles/collabos in English I will not be unhappy laugh.png

Most of their songs already have like at least some english lyrics in them, I don't know if they'll ever do a 100% english song though. (I feel like Fake love had a lot of english sentences?)

Maybe it's just gonna be like the Mic Drop remix with desiigner where the majority is in english but with some korean in it later but for now just they should just keep doing the korean with bits of english lyrics in them. 0u0plz.png i dont know what i just said tbh

the boys seem very aware that the hype won't last forever lol didn't they talk about it just a while ago

i think doing collabs with western artists and the language distribution of mic drop is an alright alternative to making english versions of their songs. honestly we'd lose so much from their lyrics if the rapline wrote in english 0u0plz.png they would need help from translators or even worse, have english lyrics given to them. i particularly wouldn't be too excited about that...

their US fanbase is currently the biggest outside of SK. i don't think they need to reach mainstream levels of 1D.  a dedicated fanbase works a lot better for kpop groups than GP popularity. plus even if the hype dies out in the US, they are big enough in korea and japan anyways. it's not like 2014/15 days anymore lol

The problem is 99% of English songs by kpop groups have cringe and awkward lyrics. Mic drop remix English is weird af. Plus their pronounciation isn't the best and I doubt suga, jhope can rap in english.

They're better off singing in Korean, than having people criticize their English. Atleast people who like the song will check out the lyrics and be impressed by how good they are.

They can do like Despacito ft. JB

mic drop was that I assume, since the rap feature in the actual track was a significant part of the song and all in english, and it got them their second hot 100 chart (and a higher number at that)

they're riding the fence between their kpop roots and more western radio-friendly tracks exceptionally well while continuing to grow, IDK how this strategy will pan out for them in the long run but it seems to be working so far. like others said, if it ain't broke don't fix it

English supermacism should be ended. English speaking people aren't the only ones who live on the Earth. So they should start to listen to other languages as well.

And looking for lyric translations on Internet which is everywhere btw doesn't require high level of IQ.

No, I don't think they should. They have been making lyrics in Korean with some lines in Englsih for years and they made it big in the US exactly with such music, and on radios their music might be the second Despacito, I mean, gp doesn't need to understand it at first, they just need to like it and fell for it.

they'll probably do some more collabs which will only help them be more visible I feel like. A lot of artist do well when they collab with someone else. It's just adds that visibility factor with the gp. They don't need to make English songs I think. They can sing Korean and the person they collab with can sing in English.

Basically they can just keep doing what they're doing 😂

No they should stick to what they're doing. The US is fickle as fuck, and it'll just be a waste of time trying to cater to them especially when they can't put in the level of promotion necessary for success in the US. And we know very well that the English lyrics will be cringe and the pronunciation won't be the best. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's more beneficial to spend that time and effort catering to Japan.

BTS should just stay true to themselves and not try and cater to Westerners. I mean, Despacito was huge and I’m pretty sure all these little children around me that would sing it had no idea what the song meant but still loved it. Granted JB was on the track too so that could have helped. If they stay true to them, keep doing what they’re doing, I think they’ll have longevity.

They're fine with their Korean songs. Their lyrics and rapping are the best in Korean.

If they want to grab more of the general public's attention then English singles or more English/Korean singles like MDR. Better yet, promote Airplane part 2. The Latin/Korean blend is an untapped potential. Their performance for that song trended on YT and non-fans were liking it.

I doubt Bighit has a long term goal btw. BTS blew up in ways Bighit couldn't have imagined hence the mistakes or questionable decisions that have been. If Bighit wants longetivity or a chance at a hit song / gaining the general public then they'd need to understand the US market more. Fake Love isn't going to debut as high as it could on Hot100 because it's from an album, not a lead single. (Think DNA vs. MDR).

Anyway, BTS are currently enjoy the best of ALL worlds (Korea, America, Japan). Their status now is unmatched ^^
