anh. 5,127
how to make dp-sized gifs(another) tutorial by your resident jonghwan stan ♥ this is going to put me out of job but anyway basically, i'm going to teach (or maybe help is a better word) how to resize a gif so that it will fit the dp rules here. we all know it's a pain in the ass when you find a gif that you really like and want to use as your dp, but can't because it happens to be way bigger than the standard set by our lovely staff (ahem). these settings are usually what i use, and you can follow them if you want. however, if you have your own settings that you'd like to use, go ahead! requirements: photoshop (any version will do, doesn't have to be the most recent one.), basic knowledge of how to make gifs, and well, navigating around your photoshop. step 1. have a gif. you can make it from a video (here is how), or snatch one from tumblr, whatever works for you. also have your photoshop open and ready. this step should be easy to do. after that, (if you haven't already), go to file > open and select your gif. step 2. once you've had your gifs open on photoshop, you are going to crop it to what you want. i personally prefer mine to be a square. go to the crop tool, which is located on the left sidebar with all the other little icons (looks like this). there are two options, the crop tool, or the perspective crop tool. i use the perspective crop tool since the crop tool hates me, but use the one you like. click + drag the square around the area that you want as your dp, and it should look like this (or something similar to it). then right click on that little square, and select crop. it will now look like this. step 3. pay attention to the animation bar at the bottom. there you will see how much frames you have, which is very crucial to dp gifs. i would recommend that color gifs should be 12 frames or less, and b&w gifs can be around 20 frames or less (since they don't need a high color quality to look nice). as you can see, my seyong gif above only has 9 frames, so no deletion is needed on my part. if your gif has a lot of frames, i would suggest looking through it to see which parts you'd like to keep. if you have to delete any frames (unfortunately), simply click on it then click on the little trash can icon at the bottom to delete it. if multiple frames are being deleted, use shift + click. optional: if you run through your dp gif (by clicking that play icon) and find it being too fast for your liking (which will most likely always happen), select all of your frames and click on the little triangle next to the numbers. a list of time frames will pop up for you to choose. i almost always select other to have my own custom time frames. anyway. once you select other, this screen will pop up. type in your own time frames, and then click on ok. your gif should now have the time frames that you wanted if you run through it again. note: step 2 and 3 are interchangeable, so it doesn't matter which order you do them in. step 4. you are almost done reading through this lame tutorial, congrats! if you have nothing more to do, go to file > save for web and devices in order to save your final result. you will now see this screen. you can see that my gif is not yet under 50kb, so i'm going to make some final changes to it. pay attention to these options right here, imo, they are going to help you a lot. and the first one will decrease the image size, as you can see. the maximum dp size that i use is 100x100, while the minimum is 80x80. anything smaller than that is quite small to me. after you've resized it and still think that it's too big, then it's time for the second option. as you can see above, that is going to change the quality of the gif. the part that says selective and pattern is to help the gif looks clearer, feel free to explore around to find what you like. what we are going to focus on is the section named colors and the icon above it. click on the icon and select optimize for file size, in which this will pop up for your screen. this will basically optimize the colors of your gif to make it under 50kb. for me, i like my dp to be around 48kb as i save it. if you noticed, once you save your gif it usually adds an extra kb or two (so like even though it showed 49kb on photoshop it will be 50kb after you save it). click on ok after you've typed in your desired file size, and photoshop will do its magic. this is what my photoshop looks like after i modified the quality. my color setting is now 66, and the size is 48.68kb (which will be 49.7kb after i save it). if you are satisfied, click save, name it whatever you want, and click save again. this is what i have now. lmao you have reached the end of this tutorial so claps for you. if there is any question, don't hesitate to ask. have a nice day ♥ ps: staff if you are reading this i propose for the dp limit to be raised to 100kb
