The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has barred one of China's most popular TV channels from airing the Eurovision song contest after it censored LGBT elements of the competition.

Mango TV was criticised on social media for apparently blurring rainbow flags and censoring tattoos during Tuesday's first semi-final.

It also decided not to air performances by the Irish and Albanian entries.

The EBU said the censorship was not in line with its values of diversity.

"It is with regret that we will therefore immediately be terminating our partnership with the broadcaster and they will not be permitted to broadcast the second Semi-Final or the Grand Final," it said in a statement.

The performance by Ireland's Ryan O'Shaughnessy featured two male dancers enacting a gay love story, while Albanian singer Eugent Bushpepa is heavily tattooed.

Homosexuality was decriminalised in China more than two decades ago but conservative attitudes still prevail in many parts of the country.

Some activists say there has been a recent effort to sideline the LGBT community. Last month Chinese social media network Sina Weibo backtracked from a controversial gay content ban after a massive outcry.

In 2016 the Chinese authorities banned depictions of gay people on TV as part of a crackdown on "vulgar, immoral and unhealthy content". A number of Chinese gay dating apps have also been shut down.

There has also been a crackdown in China on tattoos and other sub-cultures. Media regulators have reportedly banned tattooed actors, and members of the Chinese national football team wore bandages over their arms and legs to conceal tattoos during a match in March.

A number of verified Weibo accounts shared still images of the censored performances.

One account, The Voice of Homosexuality, said the broadcaster's decision to remove references to homosexuality was a "major step backwards".

Other Weibo users called for people to "boycott Mango TV," and one user said they "absolutely won't be watching Mango TV next month".

O'Shaughnessy told the BBC that he welcomed the EBU's decision.

"From the very start we've said love is love - whether it's between two guys, two girls or a guy and a girl so I think this is a really important decision," he said.

"They haven't taken this lightly and I think it's a move in the right direction so I'm happy about it."

He will perform at the final in Lisbon on Saturday with a song about the end of a relationship. He was accompanied by two male dancers during the performance that was apparently censored by Mango TV.

Other countries to have reached the final include Australia, Denmark and Hungary.

Damn thats so pathetic of China...

Like there are so many gay people here in Beijing for example.

They won't be able to silence them and to pretend they don't exist.

Chinese TV is getting boring, wait a few years and it will be like North Korean TV.

No critics, no culture, no content.

Also great for the EBU to cancel MangoTV! ahmagahplz.png

Europe stands for diversity!

Nay, it is not universal rule, and everything have to be written black and while. smile.png

Eurovision has very strict rules about the broadcasting. I remember reading/hearing about it when Denmarks representative was in drag. One reason they have strict rules is so stations can't mess with the broadcast to try and influence the votes.

You can heard everything and anything on medias. One thing for sure, they don't have the understanding about contracts. I am certainly wanna see the final episode will appear in Mango TV website or not.

Also drag queen is not really an issue when the whole China know she was a he and popular host.

If the chinese channel pay to be able to broadcast the show, then it's a big loss of $$$$ for EU.

Even if I understand "values....blablabla...from crazy liberal europeans." you can only talk about that when you have money. Once you go broke, you will change your tunes.

Gay propaganda laws are something we should respect.  Different cultures. China is not okay with destroying foundations of society.  It's simply that europe goes overboard with being anti-traditional values like the family.

The homophobia here will never cease to amaze me.

I'm not homophobic. They should have spaces and freedom.  The problem comes when it comes to over-saturation and celebration of it.  It's sort of like BDSM.  It's fine if you like BDSM. It's not fine if it's on TV and celebrated as some amazing thing to be a master or slave relationship.  We can have things be a part of society without celebrating it on mainstream media.  I think the over-usage and pushing of LGBTQ stuff is going way too far.  Especially making everyone say how brave caitlynn jenner was after the death in motor accident of another person.

It just gets to be too much of an attack on traditional values these days.

Obesity celebration, etc. There just needs to be a balance between letting people live their lives and also not destroying traditional values.  Media shouldn't be a 24/7 celebration of a pink-haired gender fluid person that is 400 lbs.  At some point it just becomes too much.

LGB shouldn't be attacked or hurt, but it's not something we need to be oversaturated with.

Traditional values also denied women the ability to vote and were against interracial marriage. Why are you so eager to defend that mindset?

Also, comparing being gay to BDSM...? LMAO
