DramaFever:

Guan Pi Pi (Victoria Song, Ice Fantasy) is an amateur reporter. In spite of being beautiful and kind, she often finds herself alone in the world. Because of that, Guan Pi Pi feels abandoned and hopeless. What she doesn’t realize is that she has been marked with an ancient curse that has been the cause of all of the misfortune in her life. He Lan Jing (Huang Jing Yu) is the Jade Master, a secretive cultural relic specialist whose face remains unseen to the public eye. He Lan Jing is practically alien to people, but no one knows just how true that statement is--The Jade Master is actually a deity from another realm. When He Lan Jing meets Guan Pi Pi, he becomes convinced that he can make her believe in love again. But for a man who lives his life in solitude, it might be tough to save a woman suffering from a supernatural, millennia-old curse. Also known as The Love Knot: His Excellency’s First Love, Moonshine and Valentine is based on the hit novel Jie Ai Yi Ke Feng Huan by Shi Ting Rou and was directed by Leste Chan.

Viki:

It will be an assignment that will change her life. Guan Pi Pi (Victoria Song) is an eager, young newspaper intern who gets an assignment go find and interview an elusive antiquarian, He Lan Jing Ting (Johnny Huang). But Pi Pi soon learns that Jing Ting is no ordinary man.

As Pi Pi tries to research everything she can about Jing Ting, she finds out that he only eats flowers, bathes in the moonlight, is blind during the day but has superior vision at night. Known as the Jade Master, Jing Ting is actually the right priest of the Fox Clan who is trying to keep humans safe from his arch nemesis, Zhao Song (Jiang Qi Lin), the left priest of the Fox Clan.

As Pi Pi is chasing down the story of her life, she is devastated to find out that her best friend, Tian Xin (Xu Fang Yi), and her childhood sweetheart, Tao Jia Lin (Xu Kai Cheng), have betrayed her. Is Jing Ting the only person who can make Pi Pi’s life whole again?

I just started watching this (it's subbed on Youtube!) and I'm really impressed with Victoria. She used to be the bottom of the barrel for me in terms of acting and I thought she would ruin any drama but she's like decent in this and I just want to hug and her and congratulate her for finally coming through and not someone I am afraid to be paired with my favorite actors. You finally did it girl! rlytearpls.png So proud.

My only problem is now I'm watching 3 dramas for the OTP, this and the others

Secret of the three Kingdoms  (just hook up already, you're already married!)

Here to Heart (Zhang Han just has something about him that makes him an engaging lead)

Having read the novel I can't help but compare and was disappointed when they changed things here and there... Be ensure all the naked/sexy bits and more are gone :P

But overall is good and Vic definitely improved.

So proud of her.

To be honest, I came and watched as a fan of Victoria. But I will stay and finish the drama because of the writing and the story.

Tbh, I'm a sucker for subtle symbolism especially in cinematography, and this has a lot of that visual cues. Kudos to the director. It looks extremely polished and very cinematic. It will definitely be setting a benchmark on my Chinese dramas.

And again, I'm glad to see that Victoria's acting constantly improving. I'll always look forward to her works.

And that car scene and those funny men. Gah. From that moment on, I am hooked on this drama.

One of the directors is Leste Chen who was a movie director. He has made a name for himself with his movies and was

one reason I was happy seeing Vic joined this production.

Her acting is still lacking so she needs good support- good director, good role and good script in order for her to shine.

And while this role isn't great (BB is frustrating because she is too ordinary and would innocently harm HL many times in the book. Not sure how it will be in the drama since they have changed a lot... ) but in a good director's had her role is definitely more lovable. I'm happy that Vic's improvement is recognized and the drama is well received.

It's #1 views for drama online today. To think the cast didn't even promote it, it is doing well.

I'm loving it QRLGYBO.png Vic's acting has improved so much ilikeitplz.png

Yeah she improved so much. So proud of her.

I'm addicted to this drama.

It has the right mixture of humor, romance and conflict for me.

I love the humor in it. And it's not overly cringe.

Here to Heart (Zhang Han just has something about him that makes him an engaging lead)

In Victoria's defense, SM isn't the best at producing actors. The best way one can learn is through experiences, but she barely gotten any. In 2012 was her first drama and there was a huge gap of nothing after that until  2015. From then on, she began having a steady 1-2 drama/movie per a year. She still has a long way to go, but over time I hope to see more improvement from her. I also want to see variation in roles as well.

Even though she is my bias I think there are a few emotions she tends to over exaggerate/not good at expressing because of her personality. Some of her everyday expressions can be over the top; extra. Her eyes can be very expressive which is both good and bad. Eyes being expressive can be a good thing, but it can also be one of your biggest flaws. Sometimes with certain emotions her eye shape and eyebrows tend to be overly expressive.

I don't know how you can watch so many dramas at once...I am having a hard time alternating between drama and variety shows because variety shows are so freaking long per an episode. I was tempted to watch Here to Heart because of Zhang Han, but I don't like his co-lead. There is just something about her that I don't like; can't get into. I've seen a few of her dramas, but I tend to skip/skim around most of the drama. Not sure why...

That's the problem with a lot of novel turned drama/movie. People who are fans of the novel tend to be very critical because there are scenes they want to see, but it's either changed or left over. There are so many books turned movie, Hollywood has ruined for me. rlytearpls.png  But even so, I still watch it because I am a sucker like that.

That car scene was so funny. When she walked out of the car after, her hands were shaking taking her purse. It was so funny because it felt like that 'who am I, where am I?' sort of feeling.

My favorite scene was when the two leads met for the first time...I knew it wouldn't be love at first sight, but for her give him money thinking he was a beggar had me laughing so loud. How embarrassing for the both of them.

Being ordinary isn't a bad. A lot of people can relate to the character during certain scenes. I know I did...age/dating/marriage is like a woman's Achilles Heel. After you hit 21+ you are constantly asked if you are dating. If you are dating someone for a long time you are pressured about marriage. I also kind of relate to the scene where she was buying her boyfriend a shirt. When I was in high school, I wanted to buy my boyfriend at the time a shirt for his bday and I didn't know his size so I looked around the store for guys with similar height and size. Then I went up to them and asked them for their size. laugh.png

Leste Chen said he would like to film a movie with Victoria. I hope Victoria and him get a chance to collaborate again. And you are right about getting the right director, script and role. I think this is the same for everyone in the industry no matter who it is. Sometimes even if you are one of the best actors out there, but the script is lacking it will be hard to watch/finish. Only fans will watch it to support you, but not the general public.

Being ordinary can be relatable especially when the character is strong, confident and smart...   but if one is too "ordinary" aka too stupid/naive/stubborn/undecided that lead to harm her beloved many times can be annoying right?  If you understand what I mean... I don't want to spoil anything LOL

But there is a curse so it's not her fault I guess LOL. I don't know how they will change it in the drama though.

And there is part 2 where Pi Pi really shows her strengths. But it's completely different setup... I don't think they will go there... even if this one is successful. But who knows?

I'm glad Leste Chen likes her. Based on his words I think he really likes her. He even defended and explain the wrong accused rumors for her... So I'd be very happy if Vic can work in a movie with him again. Finally she met a director who understand and appreciate her.

I hope if it happened, we will get better role and script...

And yes, actors can't do anything without good script and directing... no matter how good they are. That's why I don't get when they blame the drama fails to the actors... A good director would be able to bring out the best of the actor...

That's why when my biased get cast in dramas... I care who are the team behind... Vic's previous drama didn't have good/ well known director ( in China script writer isn't that big deal I don't know why) so I was excited when Vic worked with Lesle even this is a smaller production.

Good reviews and gaining recognition are what she needs the most right now. And this drama is gaining good reviews everywhere.

Maoyan rating is 8.7

Douban ratings right now is 7.4 which is pretty good for a chinese drama. They tend to go harsher on Domestics dramas.

For example 2 of the most popular dramas last year was TMOPB- Douban rating is 6.2 (its movie version is 3.9) and Princess Agent is 4.9

But the ratings tend to go lower as more people watch and rate... so let's hope we still stay at 7-ish by the end smile.png

I watch a lot of dramas if there's a lot of good ones out, and for some like Siege in Fog and Three Kingdoms/Here to Heart I skip a lot of the political scenes/business scenes and watch my OTP scenes.

I really enjoy good acting, I'm not a hardcore fan of anyone so I will gravitate towards whoever delivers for me. For example, I used to love Jin Dong but now i think he has picked some roles that he is just not good at representing, like very smarmy characters and so he's on the backburner for me, I'm no longer interested in his projects because I think he's really only good at certain roles. Right now my bias is Wang Qin, she's blowing everyone else out of the water with her acting. I watch in Three Kindoms and I'm amazed.

I know that Victoria did not get a lot of training, but she was getting so many roles that it was frustrating for me when it seemed like she was not improving.  If you want my honest opinion, she and Johnny Huang are both mostly passable in this drama and the kids who play their younger counterparts are both better at emoting, like much much better. Johnny Huang isn't noticeably bad but  watched Johnny Huang in Operation Red Sea and he delivers his lines the exact same way as he does here. But Ma Tianyu used to be a very bad actor and he has improved a lot. I'm sure Victoria will keep on improving in the future like she did here. I'm rooting for her.

I wouldn't say she "getting many roles"

In average, popular actresses in china have 3-4 projects each years at least...

If you look at Vic's profile Vic doesn't have that many projects. Some even got shelved.. especially if you compare to actresses her age ( she is 30) . Like how many projects have they done in their career compared to her? YM and ZLY could have like 7-9 per year when they are busy.

The child actor part is the charm to show viewer why their love is beautiful and the reason the story of the drama begins- They are the reason why viewer need to care for the drama in the first place... .

The little Pipi role is much more charming because that's what she is supposed to be... BUT It's not how the current adult  Pipi is.. Because little Pipi is the original 1st love- where all it started.

They aren't like this in the book but they changed it to make the story charming and cute. And I'm glad they made this change because clearly people love it.

Imo Vic's role isn't great. I didn't like it at all when I read the book.. and I was honestly worried... Like  her role is TOO normal and has nothing standout, even very frustrating at some parts from the book. Vic is doing a good job to make her more lovable at least. Let's hope they will do some good changes for her role as the drama continues...

I don't think her acting is great yet. But she has improved and everyone acknowledged that. That's the most important and what we care right now.

Vic wasn't born to act and she isn't perfect. She knows that and we know that. But it doesn't stop her from trying or stop us to support her.

Actors can only shine when they have good roles, good story and director.  Vic need to work in better projects with better production to support her weakness... I hate when people blaming her or any actresses ( Male tend to get it much easier ) when the projects are messy and would fail with or with out her.

I actually watched/skimmed episodes 5-8 last night because I got too impatient. I get what you mean when you say she harms her beloved so many times, but in her defense her emotions are rightly felt. Put yourself in her shoes, you should know what I mean by that. Lol. The boy is too impatient and too aggressive. Oh, but wait. Asian countries love those sort of boys. imstupid.png But if you encountered someone like him in real life, you'd all be running for the hills no matter how good looking he is. I think this is just a different situation  for the both of them. They both reacted the way I would expect from them if I were in their shoes.

It's good that Leste Chen likes her, but I feel that if he keeps on saying good things about her more people would hate on her more than there already are. I do hope he would put her in one of his films in the future. Hope they weren't empty praises from him.

Yeah...I feel Chinese people are harsher with their critiques on domestic dramas while more accepting of other countries dramas. I can name a handful of Korean dramas they love that I couldn't finish LOL.

I agree with you with the gaining good reviews and recognition. She was always known as being a amazing dancer, a good singer, great at variety shows and a bad actress. She should have started in smaller roles in the beginning, but I understand why she took on big roles instead. She is not only behind in experience, but age as well. She started her acting career really late in the game compared to others so I wasn't expecting much the first few years of her acting anyways, but I am really looking forward to her drama with Ou Hao.

I watch a lot of dramas if there's a lot of good ones out, and for some like Siege in Fog and Three Kingdoms/Here to Heart I skip a lot of the political scenes/business scenes and watch my OTP scenes.

The only person I am a huge fan of is Victoria (watch/follow everything, not just dramas), but aside from her I watch almost anything; give things a try. I watch a lot of dramas too, but I don't really have OTPs in drama unless it is a romance genre. I like/prefer certain genres from different countries more. I enjoy good acting too, but sometimes I enjoy a good storyline more. As long as the acting is decent/good and the storyline is great, I'll watch it. Example: It Started with a Kiss. Ariel Lin was a decent actress at the time, not the best, but I enjoyed the drama so much. I also enjoy great acting and decent story line as long as I feel attached to the story/character. Example: The Journey of Flowers. I cried buckets during the drama. I kept replaying the ending where she was laying in his arms. I also really enjoy older HK dramas like Foresic Heroes, great acting. No need for love lines. Then there are dramas that I could never get into no matter what. I don't know if it was the storyline or acting, but it never drawls me in like it did for others. Examples: The General & I, Desendant of the Sun.

I agree with your Victoria's evaluation. She was decent/good in this drama. The child actors were really amazing. Their lines were full of emotions while their facial expressions were subtle.

Wow, you actually watch all actors improvements. (applauds to you). I only remember their acting skills if it is a high emotion drama/scene. I am not the attentive type unless it involves my bias. rlytearpls.png

loving it, so good so far, when is the next episode?

Next episode will be out Weds/Thurs China time zone.

Next episode will be out Weds/Thurs China time zone.

Nah I'm one that put females above males for the sake of being fair since many fangirls love males already...

And there is no right and wrong in many things... My point is when one suffered a lot int the story and the other one kept causing harm to the other, people will naturally taking sides.

Of course she has her reasons ( for example because she is too nice and wants to help the cheating ex bf that cause HL injured badly unknowingly? )

But that doesn't mean it won't make readers unhappy, right?

There are a sense of justice and fairness in each of us And it's true most fangirls tend to be on the boy's side more... But even when I read this... and tried to understand her POV... I still think her character is frustrating and almost has nothing stand out....

But she has her strength too, but it doesn't showcase much in the book 1... only at the end... They show more of her strengths in book 2- it's also where she suffered more... I guess roles reversal for her and HL but it's not happening in this drama.

And if you think you see enough of her harming her beloved in ep 5-8, I'm telling you it's only the beginning :P

Honestly, HL suffers much more in the book than the drama... He was also more patient in the book too... They did some change to justify for her character in the drama already...

So let's pray they  will cut back a lot of those suffer HL will endure. I don't want people to hate on Pipi LOL

Leste didn't need to say those nice words for her if it's empty. He is award winner director ( lot of people checked out the drama for HIM.... And he didn't say the wanted to work with Johnny like he did with Vic even he praised both...  I don't see it as empty words but it's not ALL up to him to cast her. There are production company, investors, etc... involved. If Vic keep improving I believe there is definitely a chance in the future...

I don't get why you think people would hate her if he said nice words... It's the opposite. Her haters who attacked her previously got shut down thank to him.

It's ok for her to take lead roles... Her earlier productions were small anyway... But she should have take acting class or something since she didn't come from acting... She took the harder way. If she know how to select good roles and production it wouldn't be as bad...

The teaser of Alone in love is lovely... But the book/story is tragic... that I didn't want to read LOL. I don't know if I can watch her suffer so much in the drama LOL.

We have 2 eps on Wednesday and Thursday each week.

I see thanks, cant wait

I actually watched/skimmed episodes 5-8 last night because I got too impatient. I get what you mean when you say she harms her beloved so many times, but in her defense her emotions are rightly felt. Put yourself in her shoes, you should know what I mean by that. Lol. The boy is too impatient and too aggressive. Oh, but wait. Having read the novel I can't help but compare and was disappointed when they changed things here and there... Be ensure all the naked/sexy bits and more are gone :P

But overall is good and Vic definitely improved.

So proud of her.

Is there an English version of the novel that I can read?

I don't think the anyone translated to English yet.

Hopefully as the drama is gaining more attention, some people will translate both books.
