Article:

Meet Mink: A desktop printer that prints makeup. Like, literal makeup... that you can use and put on your face. It’s an invention by Harvard Business School graduate Grace Choi, who told TechCrunch she wants to take out the middleman markups served to consumers by high-end cosmetic companies.

Choi introduced her invention this week at TechCrunch’s Disrupt NY conference. She said the idea came to her while exploring the cosmetics industry, when she noticed that consumers were forced to shell out more cash for unique options when it comes to beauty.

“Volume discounts drive the mass [retailer] price points, so they can only select colors that are going to sell out in mass volumes,†she explained. “So if you want the cool niche colors, you have to go to — Sephora, but who likes paying for expensive Sephora prices? No one. That’s who.â€

Preach.

That’s when Mink comes into play. As unbelievable as it sounds, it’s exactly what it sounds like: It’s a printer that prints custom makeup pigments on demand. That’s where Choi reels the Disrupt NY audience in, “It gives you the selection of prestige, and combines it with the convenience of mass. As a matter of fact, I’m beating the selection of prestige, because I’m giving you the selection of the internet. And I’m beating the convenience of mass, because I’m giving you the convenience of your own freaking house.â€

To create makeup using Mink, consumers use color picker to grab the Hex code of a shade they’d like to recreate. Click print and within minutes a real life beauty product pops out! Choi created an eyeshadow for the demonstration, but she noted lipsticks, creams, foundations, and other items can also be made.

But what is this trickery?? Is it just an elaborate prank to tug at the heartstrings of beauty junkies worldwide? Not really. It’s real. In fact, it’s almost too real.

Choi explained that “just like an ink-jet printer, you just need substrates and ink, both of which are FDA-compliant and come from the same exact sources as those of trusted brands.†The pricepoint of the printer will launch at about $300 and the ink and substrates will be “accessible.†The demographic Mink is going after is young (13-21), so we expect to see the brand stay on track with affordable prices. What this will reflect in the quality has yet to be seen, but when Choi dusted her hot pink eyeshadow, fresh off the printer, on her hand — man, the mind reels!

Mink is set to launch later this year. Sephora, it’s officially time to get nervous.

didn't know if this should be in technology or beauty.

:omg:

nothing new, though.

we already have prototypes of 3D human ORGAN (livers, kidneys, etc.) printers, a makeup printer is nothing in comparison!

so?

you can say this about nearly everything in life.

I just thought it was an interesting concept/idea, which I have never seen before.

Does this mean that we are getting a little closer to making a 3d food printer?  :ahmagah:

I think that's called cooking

:hurr:

Sounds fucking awesome tbh. I probably missed this while reading but could we load it up with our own powders like from tkb trading and have it mix/finish it for us?

I've always wanted to try from TKB but I don't how the fuck to make it "finished" and ready to use skd fksfjgg.

haven't really read it but she didn't go in depth about the whole thing... but I'm presuming if you have the correct material for it, it'll be possible since this is more about the application of colour to the material (not focussing on any special/extra material). she said it's all about using the raw ingredients.

pretty cool imo... have some lipstick material... choose whichever colour you want. good game.

the lipstick aspect would be so fucking amazing. Most eyeshadow colors I have because I'm such a huge hoarder of eyeshadows but like there pink lip colors I see people use in their Youtube videos or ads or on celebs and I can never find a good dupe color skdjfngfdfg

True, 3D printing is nothing new but besides printing tools and mechanical things I've never seen it used for practical every day things like... make-up and I've certainly never witnessed someone make a portable version and try to sale it in stores for regular everyday people to use. 3D printing tends to be used by huge manufactures or businesses and not in regular homes. This is actually very innovative and could lead to 3D printing eventually becoming a common household item like the microwave.

What I like most about this idea though is the fact that you can find the perfect shade without leaving your home. Grace Choi is absolutely right, if you aren't pale skinned and fair complexioned you have little chance of finding your perfect shade at the department store done the street. They sale to those who are most likely to buy and in this world pale-skinned people hold the worlds economics in a vice grip so of course they are most likely to buy high-end expensive make-up or even the cheap stuff at the corner store, it's just the way the world works.
