Why is Lovelyz not popular?

Burning Desire

Recommended Posts

Obviously their title songs and their b-sides are gold and the members are adorable as well (just like their group name)

But why aren't they popular enough both domestically and internationally? I heard that they have a stable uncle fandom in South Korea, but why aren't their level of popularity same as Red Velvet or Twice? Korea loves cute concepts and Lovelyz is one of those idols korea would die for.

Anyways y'all stream That Day chuplz.png

They do have a huge stable fanbase in korea, but really don't know why they are not that popular internationally cause they have the talents, looks etc.

But good thing that in this new comeback they are getting more and more recognition so that's a good thing :)

They have a stable fandom in SK, actually one of the strongest groups from the new generation in SK, but they still lack internationally, but with That Day Billboard and Grammy wrote about them. I hope more female listeners will check them out !!!

Timing is one reason, behind the scenes connections and backing are another... Woollim can only do so much to promote their acts because they don't have as many resources and connections as bigger companies like SM. With their timing it's just always been bad during their rookie years, the transitional period of 2016 was also a hard hit for them since they released Destiny on the same day as Cheer Up by Twice, which became a hit... after that they took almost a full year off which... surprisingly didn't hurt them that much in terms of their fanbase number and sales (R U Ready? is their highest selling release to date) but it did set them back because the first couple of years are vital and that time can't be brought back.

Now they're at the same general place they've always been, but their numbers are better. They've always been exactly at that spot that separates the more well known groups from the lesser known groups, and each comeback it seems like they might break that point but the standards keep getting higher and the industry becomes even more competitive so they basically maintain their position.

They also have so many releases at this point, usually people come out with their break out hit within a few songs into their career... which Lovelyz DID... but it was a sleeper hit so while it definitely helped them it still didn't propel them to the highest of tiers which is a little frustrating for fans because they're a group who constantly ALMOST gets to the point we want them to go but always falls short by a small margin or uncontrollable variable. But... if it's meant to be it's meant to be... : )

Sorry, but their MV is unnatural, I have to say 'plastic.' Don't you see it? Nevertheless, the problem is not with girls; it is producers' issue to sort out where is a catchy and bright picture and where is unnatural and plastic.

same tbh, it was surprising that Lovelyz did well with their second release even though they're not from the big 3 companies and I expected them to become a top tier girl group with Ah-Choo becoming a sleepy hit and even charting on the annual charts but ever since 'Destiny' happened they somehow disappointed the audiences and rested for a year (Destiny did moderately on the charts though, even though they had a competiton with Twice) They were considered to be rivals with TWICE after Ah-Choo did pretty well and their album sales boosted after Ah-Choo  but all of a sudden their digital power was gone after Destiny.

To me, Lovelyz is one of those groups that's just quietly growing. Their fan base seems solid or stable , just like I find their releases to be.

Their music and concepts maybe aren't as attention grabbing at others and aren't necessarily the type to be breakout hits, which I think works well for them. They've been able to establish their own niche and as a casual fan I really admire their consistency.

There is no secret, they have good music and cute girls, they just need special features and a producer to make use of them.

If you look at the success of Momoland, you could argue that the music just went viral but in my opinion a lot of elements made it so, Jooe unique character easily recognizable and good Tropicana campaign, hot bodies from several members Hyebin, Yeonwoo, Taeha..., smart mv that associates the girls with their names

In Lovelyz right now, i would say those assets would be Mijoo's extra personnality and Sujeong hot body but in their recent MV they don't even use those, it's just a group of cute girls dancing in a basic pastel decor

I choose WOW! as a single adequate video. Maybe because it's humorous. Others are trash or more than arty)))

Woollim didn't capitalize on the hype Ah Choo created. Meanwhile, Doublekick capitalized on the viral fancam of Jooe dancing to Ring Ring and created the EDM version for Wonderful Love, which set the viral status of Jooe. Lovelyz simple lacks the explosive/viral factor. They lack members that really stands out like Tzuyu or Jooe.

Even when Momoland was nugu, they could still get the whole stadium crazy (1:38).  Lovelyz has great vocal lines and visuals but they aren't just very entertaining to watch.

Also, budget MVs and wrong comeback timing ruin Lovelyz's shoot for hitting it big. Lovelyz's MV now looks like what OMG would release and that hurts them even more.OMG's amazing MV helps them at least get to the Melon top 10.

I think Woollim is promoting Sujeong's hot bod now. She's getting Mijoo's gear.

The only route for Lovelyz is to release "healing" songs that would stay in people's mind for a long time. But they fail, except for Ah Choo. With Kai's vocal, Lovelyz can release this type of healing song.

They don't belong to one of the big 3 companies......

BTS, MMM, Sistar were all successful groups so thats not the reason. Being in Big 3 gives you an advantage but its not necesssary.

OP mentioned their concepts are quite similar to Twice and RV but I think their songs are very much lacking in comparison. Their songs are either not catchy enough or not unique enough, it dont have that "it" factor for the public to be interested

Tbvh it's more on the part wherein who will compete with Lovelyz during their comeback.

If you think about it, during the first three title songs (Candy Jelly Love, Hi~, Ah-Choo), they actually did really well - not in terms of charting but more of garnering attention from the audience who're following them.

Now, let's move on to Destiny where the "tables should turn", yes it did opened some of the public eye BUT you got Gfriend - Rough and TWICE - Cheer Up so obviously their comeback will be overshadowed because they're up against powerful competitors.

Fast forward to 'Now, Us' wherein the girls finally received their FIRST WIN in The Show. Okay, I know what you all are thinking, they got a close call for a win because the groups they're against aren't as popular; however this is just the first step and not any group who has numerous comebacks can be nominated in a prayer.

Now skipping towards 'That Day', if you think about it - on the very first week of their promotions, they're already nominated not just in The Show anymore but in MCOUNTDOWN, Show! Champion and Music Bank. If only Winner/TWICE aren't nominated or have higher physical sales than Chi Yeol (btw i'm not bitter, i'm just stating the facts and I love them too dw, I don't hate anyone), the girls could have an inch forward to grab those trophies. But then again, this IS the first step and their song is actually charting well like I can literally see them in the Instiz iChart (go to their website).

The girls are slowly climbing up and we (as fans or stans) have to be grateful that even if we can't clutch the win at least they are slowly rising to the occasion.

In conclusion, yes Woollim does have some trouble with promoting the girls at a full-scale; however, in order for Lovelyz to hit "that moment", their comeback should have a combination of [1] less fierce competitors, [2] better choice of title song, istg Bizarre couldve been the title song but mmkay I trust Woollim and the girls, and [3] fandom power throughout their comeback.
