"We don't have many places in America where we have urged people to look at the history of racial inequality, to look at the history of slavery, of lynching, of segregation," said Stevenson, who is black. The memorial opens the same week that Alabama marks Confederate Memorial Day, an official state holiday in which state offices will close.

"They didn't ever believe he committed suicide. It didn't make sense that you find someone hanging in a tree with his hands tied behind him," Johnnye Patterson said.

Stevenson said Monday that he expects that some people will be "uncomfortable" by the new memorial and museum, noting the organization got pushback a few years ago when they erected the first historical markers in downtown Montgomery to mark the sites of slave markets.

"I think there is a better America still waiting. There is a more just America still waiting ... There's a kind of community that we haven't achieved yet. but we can't achieve it if we are unwilling to tell the truth about our past."

AP writer Jay Reeves in Montgomery, Alabama, contributed to this report.

Edit2:

Picture can be seen in the link. Honestly, it does make you feel uncomfortable seeing that kind of memorial and statues, but I guess its being more honest?

I think it's time people were slapped in the face with history because some people are too keen to pretend it didn't thappen and some are too keen to repeat :( if it makes them uncomfortable, it will make them think and that's not a bad thing.
