Zayn Malik is dropped by manager amid claims he's 'difficult to work with'

Manager Sarah Stennett of First Access Entertainment has terminated her relationship with former One Direction member Zayn Malik, Variety has learned. Malik, whose second solo album is due in June on RCA, had worked with Stennett since his 2015 departure from One Direction.

While the split comes at an awkward time — Malik just released the second single and video from the forthcoming album last week — sources say the artist is challenging to work with, declining many promotional opportunities and not touring behind his last album, although he is planning one behind the new set. Like the first single from the new album — “Dusk Til Dawn,†a collaboration with Sia released last fall — the new song “Let Me†features a big-budget video (helmed this time by “Narcos†director Jose Padilha) that stars Malik as an action hero.

The split is the second high-profile departure in recent weeks for First Access, which parted ways with longtime client Ellie Goulding earlier this year; she is now with Tap Management, which handles Lana Del Rey and Dua Lipa. The company also suffered a crushing loss in November when highly touted MC Lil Peep died of an accidental drug overdose at just 21.

However, First Access has a strong roster that includes Bebe Rexha, Rita Ora, and others, as well as a partnership with up-and-coming singer Madison Beer.

A representative for Malik could not be reached for comment. When contacted by Variety, Stennett confirmed the news, adding, “Sometimes in life you have to make extremely difficult decisions to effect positive change for everyone.â€

Zayn suffers from extreme anxiety so I’m not sure how “declining many promotional opportunities and not touring behind his last album†correlates to difficult to work with...

[Blind Gossip]

You hear about stars dropping their agent or manager or publicist all the time to go with someone they think can make them more successful.

However, when you hear about an agent or manager or publicist dropping their client like a hot potato, it’s almost always because the client has gotten out of control!

This male singer is very popular, is worth tens of millions of dollars, and has literally millions of followers on social media. You would think that anybody would be thrilled to represent him.

Nope.

He just got dropped – hard – by one of his longtime reps.

"They just couldn’t deal with his drug use any more. Working with someone this self-destructive is both exhausting and untenable."

so this was about him hmm

He didn't do alot of promotion duo to his anxiety tho. If that's one of the reasons why they dropped him, well then bye. He's doing just fine imo, he can find a new manager easily.

Idk about the drugs that was hinted.

Robbie Williams had some issues with drugs too when he left Take That, I hope Zayn Malik will be able to shake off what seems like a very common former boy band member curse.

Robbie had alot of problems with drugs and booze but he always toured and promoted like a champ. He was killing Glastonbury when no pop acts were getting near that main stage.

People talking about this guy’s anxiety as if that’s an unfair reason to call him difficult to work with are a little naive.

If your job was to ensure the success of an artist’s projects, publicaly as well as professionally, and said artist essentially refuses to promote... or will only do it a little and won’t tour an album.... regardless of the reason... that’s someone difficult to work with. Her job is to be a conduit between him and a label. Artists are expected to tour... especially since people barely bother to purchase albums anymore... and streaming profits don’t look nearly the same. If he’s refusing to continue to earn... she’s getting accosted by his label and SHE’S losing credibility. I’d quit too. His refusal to do the work that pretty much all other pop acts do makes him a pointless client. Yeah he’s Zayn Malik but who want to pull teeth getting him to personally promote his work in the most basic industry ways?

I also doubt his anxiety is the only reason. I also doubt him being difficult about promotion is the only reason. Bet it’s hard to get him into the studio too.

probably Robbie was still sane despite his drug addiction compared to Zayn. looking at Zayn now is pitiful, like looking a soulless musician. such a shame since he is very talented and handsome

I can't blame him, when you suffer from anxiety - I seem to recall he said something about it once - being an entertainer is one of the worst possible career choices you can make - and with all the drugs freely available in the business, well...

Can't believe there are people defending drug users like they had no choice but drugs....

It’s Hollywood, almost everyone does drugs there, it’s part of how the system works, it’s sorta an unwritten social rule, so he might as well had no other choice if he wanted to fit in. Addiction is different though. In Hollywood even hardcore drug use it’s generally tolerated as long as the individuals are high-functioning, but if it becomes unmanageable, then the artists are let to their fate. He is neither the first nor the last example of this. He might be at the point he daily doses to survive the withdrawal effects and then gradually reduce it in order to fight it; he can’t just stop now. I hope he gets better and gets a strong support system. This is what he needs the most now. Without a support system, it will get worse.

He gave shitloads of radio interviews last week AND he recorded more than 80 tracks for Mind Of Mine but sure it’s hard to get him into the studio

Y’all are going hard defending a company that lost Ellie Goulding, Lana Del Rey etc and pushed Lil Peep so hard that homeboy died of an overdose

Zayn is right for putting his mental health first

....last week....

So after his manager quit and he committed to a tour (which no doubt was ultimatum-ed) ... recording over 80 tracks for an album isn't a good thing.... it's costly as fuck for a label and it usually indicates people who aren't on the same page grappling over the direction of an album...as well as an artist who has been sitting on their hands for an extended period of time.

Nobody is "going hard" about anything. Simply mentioning that a manager QUITTING the services of a big name is usually an indication of internal issues stemming from behaviour of the artists. Because it's less common for a rep to walk away from a big name...I tend to believe the person making the difficult decision in this scenario.

Didn't defend the company, just the manager... all I said is, anxiety, while real and crippling, would for sure make Zayn a difficult artist to work with, if he's not doing what management needs him to do when they need him to do it. Good on him for putting his mental health first or w/e... but that doesn't make him any less difficult.

PS: anxiety was proposed by his fans who would refuse to believe that any of his bad habits would be the reason why the rare instance of a rep dropping a relevant artist occurred. I'm not that invested so i'll give benefit of the doubt...but lol because we all know that's not it.

First of all: Zayn paid for his own album how is this costly for the label? Lmao. All the songs were ready before he signed with RCA.

Every single song came from his OWN pocket. If anything RCA is profiting a lot with him because they don’t have to do big investments or even pay for his album production

the producers (MYKL, Malay, XYZ) the studio sessions, engineers... Zayn paid them. Not RCA.

Sarah Stennett DID know Zayn was struggling with depression, eating disorder and anxiety before signing him but instead of looking for less consuming ways of promo they made him go up on stage after a panic attack. Homeboy was throwing up but he still went up on the stage and sang.

To be a manager, you need to know your client is a human. What Sarah and FAE is doing is very unprofessional.

I can’t stand y’alls ableism anymore. Not every single singer alive in hollywood is a cokehead.
