Zayn Malik Was 'Aspiring to Be in Love' With Gigi Hadid For the Rest of His Life

Eight months ago, a Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik engagement was very possible—in fact, Malik was planning on being with Gigi forever, he admitted to Ryan Seacrest on On Air With Ryan Seacrest today. Malik wrote his new song "Let Me" about Hadid "maybe about seven, eight months ago," he told the host in his first big interview alluding to Hadid at all since their breakup last month.

 

He explained to Seacrest that back then, he was head over heels, though he didn't name the obvious who explicitly. "I was in love—and I think that's pretty evident," he said. "And yeah, I was aspiring to be in love with someone for the rest of my life and the rest of theirs, as we all do. And things change and we move forward in life. Times change, but yeah, that's what I was thinking when I wrote it."

 

For reference, last April, Malik described Hadid as "my everything" on Instagram:

 

 

 

 

 

Malik offered a nice perspective on breakup tracks later in the interview to Seacrest: "We go through experiences so we have memories and we have stories and things to write down and you know, contemplate and think about," he said. "You get to really put your experience into something that’s going to be remembered forever."

 

Hadid has been very supportive of Malik since their split. Despite Malik erasing all his Instagram photos of her as part of his new-music-PR-move social media purge, she still liked one of his Instagrams teasing the track.

 

 

The two shared very loving statements on Twitter when they initially broke up. Hadid's went so far as to suggest the door was open to reconciliation in the future.

 

"Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship, and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and a friend," Malik posted first. "She has such an incredible soul. I’m grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at the time, we wish this news could have come from us first. We love you all. xZ"

 

 

 

 

 

"Breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience together over a few years .. not only in the relationship, but in life in general," Hadid wrote after. "I’m forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I shared. I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend that I have immense respect and love for. As for the future, whatever’s meant to be will always be. xG."
