Companies selling your personal information. Do you agree or not?

I watched Morgan Spurlock Inside Man's episode about data collectors among other things. The following recaps a part of what the episode is about:

If you're reading this on the Internet, chances are you're being followed. More than 200 data collection companies and ad networks use approximately 600 different tracking technologies to gather and sell information on people's web habits, according to Abine, an online privacy firm that tracks the trackers. The online advertising industry is a $31 billion business fueled largely by behind-the-scenes exchanges of consumers' personal online shopping and browsing habits.

Interestingly enough, I googled my personal email. Turns out you can find my home address, my family members' names based on that search alone and pay to obtain even more information about me on a people search website I wont disclose. Saying that I am creeped out as hell is an understatement.

Now, Im careful on the internet. Meaning I dont have twitter (I deleted it out of fear), facebook, myspace, etc. Also, after googling myself I went on to delete accounts from other less known sites like livejournal. I use private browsing and have never revealed to anyone online my family's name or my address. Imagine someone who frequents those social sites. You can basically track their lives on a daily basis.

Pretty sure my personal information was aggregated from my spending habits. This led me question why I do I have to include stuff like my phone number in checkouts? Ebay alleges the number is needed in case they need to call me regarding my order. All of the sites I purchase from email me. (Hmmm)

Needless to say, I am speechless at the thought that companies collect my personal information and their clients can pay for it. Without my consent. Without my knowledge. :omg: If you watch the episode, you would find out that the practice is not only legal but also I dont have the freedom to opt out of what is basically online stalking (read the article). The only option people like me have is to never use the internet. How can I not?

I'm not surprised. I've attended a few internet security lectures and the amount of information on the internet is shocking.

Selling of personal information has been going on for a while now. I don't know how I feel about it. I don't want my information being sold to target advertisements at me but at the same time some of this is our fault because we willingly put this information out there, or we don't have control over it.

I also feel like there is little the government can do about this. Security laws about information selling are very difficult to implement, and don't know if they would have a significant effect.

Lol the only shit you can find about me online is what I put there myself, and I have almost every social site as Twitter...

But, if it's to the extent that you can find really personal information it's going too far. Imo they do not have the right to put that online.

Yeah. Happens to me too. Except they've got my old info from like 3+ yrs ago since I've moved like several times now so I'm good.

I have moved several times as well. If you use google maps, companies still have access to your home address.

Whats scary is that I cant remember what I have done on the internet over the years to backtrack and delete it. Its all out there.

Not the USA government. The NSA forces companies to turn over phone and online data. The government spying on Americans traces back to before Richard Nixon's president term.

Try usernames, your full name and home address. See what turns up.

nothing other than public pages I've posted on

there is this one website which claims to know my information but I doubt it... it claims it knows dating sites I've signed up for but I've never used them

and I'm not going to pay to confirm whether that's true or not lol

now I should probably go and delete some of the embarrassing stuff I wrote under certain usernames haha

Creepy.. Yeah I think last year or something I went on Google and searched my info and tried deleting/closing as many things as I could that I didn't want people to have access to but... well, it's impossible to get everything. Especially if you use the internet all the time like I do.  -_-
