A photo of a student who had painted his face black to impersonate an African-American figure sparked outrage among Miami Catholic school alumni after it was shared online.

The photo was taken during a Black History Month celebration at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School in Miami, the Miami Herald reported.

Fourth-grade students had been asked to dress up as famous African-Americans while presenting on them.

A student who chose former Secretary of State Colin Powell wore “blackface†as part his costume.

On Monday the school posted the photo on its website and social media accounts — triggering complaints from alumni.

“I was pretty taken aback that not only did a student come to school dressed that way, it didn’t occur to anybody that that’s offensive, and it go to the point where they posted on a public online platform and nobody saw any issue with that,†alum Victoria Freyre told the Miami Herald.

Freyre slammed her alma mater for failing to immediately address the incident.

“This is something that could have been addressed and opened up a broader conversation about why blackface is bad,†she said. “They need to be teaching their students that that kind of stuff is not OK.â€

Another alum who is now a teacher said she was “appalled†by the photo. Carolina Bacallao said she shared it with her former classmates encouraging them to contact the school. She said the child should have been asked to wash his face as a “teaching moment.†she told the Miami Herald.

The school took down the photo after it received complaints. Archdiocese of Miami spokeswoman Mary Ross Agosta said the child had not meant to be offensive.

“This was a project not only to celebrate Black History Month but also to understand the diversity,†she said. “It was never the intention of a fourth-grade student to do anything other than be authentic in his presentation of the person he selected to research and imitate.â€

Agosta further defended the student’s creativity and said she didn’t believe that teachers objected to his costume.

I doubt the kid understood the implications of painting his face black

Most likely, but what about the person who took the photo and the one who uploaded it online?

After seeing that they should have not taken the photo and explain to the kid why this is wrong.

I imagine they may have thought it was harmless since it was a child and knew he was likely not doing it disrespectfully~

I wonder what his parents said about this, though~

I don't get your comment. So what do you want them to do? Stay silent on the matter? This a an issue involving their old school, their future coming generation, and you want them to just not say anything because of the color of their skin is not black?? They should allow the offense to continue???

You do realize back when slavery was a thing, there were white people who also felt it was wrong but many of them chose to say nothing? So you know how many lives could have been saved if more spoke up? Instead, only some of them were punished when they chose instead to help slaves escape.

I'm not implying that white people have suffered also therefore they should also have a right to speak up, but that there shoould be no limit on who gets to stand against something wrong when they see it occur.

That's like saying if you see someone getting bullied you have no right to say anything against it because it has nothing to do with you - which just isn't true. Yes, we are living in an era of rampant SJW's flying their mouths offs and getting people hate, but in serious cases like these I just don't see the problem.

No one thinks the kid is racist anyway - at most we probably think what the hell were the parents thinking, or teachers, or person who stayed silent and did not address the issue to the child about why what he was doing was wrong but uploaded the picture instead.

There is already enough racial divide growing in today's society as it is, we don't need to help it bloom by pointing fingers and telling anyone not apart of our race to shut the fuck up or mind their own business.
