People who grew up away from their home countries

do you sometimes feel like going back home?

It's funny because when I was a child I almost hated my home country

I hated the culture and the mindsets, the fact that my country was so poor and that our president was (and still is) corrupt that I couldn't do what I wanted because people were very judgmental and the fact that my father is a pastor didn't help, like we always had to give this image of the perfect christian family.

All I wanted at the time was to leave but now I miss being there somehow, I kinda miss the sense of community we have there, like here in europe and most western countries everything is always so fast and everything is about efficiency, you can never take your time to do things and actually enjoy it.

And what I miss the most is ironically the culture that I use to hate so much, I never took time to properly learn my own language because not only weren't we not allow to speak it while being at school, my parent also always encouraged me to learn french and english instead and would always talk to me in french. And I know little to nothing about my own culture, the customs, the history, or art. Well I know more or less about the history.

I feel kinda out of place sometimes, like a part of me is missing. I never thought I'd feel like this, I've spend a lot of time listening to music from my home country and I actually like it, it's such a shame because I've never given it a chance before

My country isn't a place to live rn (I don't wanna say where I'm from)... but there's a lot of corruption and natural disasters and thievery and mess ...

But I miss the way things were it is really sad and hard. I was always a person who loved the history and the culture and the language so I never was distanced from it, but now it's like impossible to go back and it's sad af

Are you sure that your country's president is a real president rather than a dictator? You should be around 15 at least and if that person is ruling the country since you were a kid....

Anyways,as long as my parents were with me,i wouldnt have cared as much...

And i can assure you that you can learn your native language properly via websites that teach it.And in order to feel not too far away from your country, you may watch news/series of your country so that you would be aware of what's going on there and feel like a part of that community.

He is a dictator, when I was born the president at the time was already in power for like 30 years

then he died when I was around 9 and his son took his place thankx to the military, now I'm 20 years old, and the president still hasn't change, I'm saying president because I'm being politically correct but yes totally he is indeed a dictator.

well that's the thing I don't live with parents I move away when I was 11 years old, I left Togo my home country by my self and came in France to live with my big sister. I don't live with my parents anymore and I see them like every other year. Togo being a small country doesn't have much movie or series that I could easily find on the internet, I found some music on youtube recently. But thankx for the suggestion smile.png

Be proud sis, you're brave enough to leave your country at that age and i'm sure you do have enough power hidden inside you to deal with problems you face...And probably you may find someone to chat via internet who is also from Togo so that you can improve your skills.Don't give up. FIGHTING!!!!!

EDIT: I've found a link of media outlets in Togo, probably you know them but hopefully it will be helpful to you...

I would say no.

I'll always feel like I'm connected to my home country (even though I don't live in it now) because I'm constantly surrounded by people who are from my home country.

I wouldn't want to visit it because in the region where I was born in and raised from an early age, its not an ideal place to raise a child in.

Plus I'm going to visit there next week.
