wǒ mí máng de wèn fó

rén shì jiÄn de yuán shì shén me

fó shuŠwǔ bǎi cì de huí móu

huàn jÄ«n shì yÄ« cì cÄ jiÄn ér guò

I perplexedly ask Buddha:

In this mortal world, what is fated affinity[1.1]?

Buddha says: five hundred backward glances

Bring about, in exchange, one occasion of brushing past one another in this lifetime.

wǒ kùn huò de wèn fó

rén shì jiÄn de fèn shì shén me

fó shuÅ fèn wéi yuán jù yuán qÇ yuán miè

yī qiè qiáng qiú bù dé

I puzzledly ask Buddha:

In this mortal world, what is destiny[1.2]?

Buddha says: destiny is being brought together due to fated affinity. The arising of such affinity and its extinguishment,

None of that can be forcefully demanded.

wǒ qián chéng de wèn fó

rén shì jiÄn de ài shì shén me

fó shuŠài yóu xÄ«n shÄ“ng shì jiÄn de ài

yī qiè zì yǒu yīn guǒ

I piously ask Buddha:

In this mortal world, what is love?

Buddha says: love is borne of the heart. The love in this world,

All of it naturally has its own cause[2.1] and effect[2.2].

**

è¦å¦ä¼šèˆå¾—

wǒ chéng xīn de wèn fó

rén shì jiÄn de qíng zÄ›n me jiÄ› tuÅ

fó shuŠqíng yǒu ài xù dǒng dé xī yuán

yào xué huì shě dé

I sincerely ask Buddha:

How does one free oneself from the affection in this mortal world?

Buddha says: affection has love to continue on after it. To know to cherish fated affinity,

One must learn to give up [some things] in order to gain [others].

If it truly truly truly is as Buddha says,

[Then] what had we once been in [our] previous lifetime?

If it truly truly truly is as Buddha says,

[Then] isn't [our] encounter in this lifetime the most beautiful outcome?

If it truly truly truly is as Buddha says,

[Then] what else do we seek in this lifetime?

If it truly truly truly is as Buddha says,

[Then we] should have put down that obstinate persistence much earlier

[And] cherished this happiness that's in [our] possession.

T/N:

[1] [1.1] 缘 (yuán) and [1.2] 分 (fèn) together form the term 缘分, wherein two people who share sufficient affinity are able to meet and then have a destined relationship (whether it's one of love or something else).

[2] [2.1] å›  (hetu) and [2.2] æžœ (vipÄka) are commonly translated as cause and effect. Whatever "cause" you sow, you will eventually reap its "effect". Thinking of it the other way around, whatever you experience is the consequence of some earlier (perhaps in a previous life) intentional action of yours.
