What do you mean by thematically with the way it's built that Arata x Chihaya is more likely?

Arata x Chihaya is simply childhood friends + Karuta. There isn't much development in their bond in the entire High School arc. I know they can develop it further in University arc.

Recently, I reread chapter 163(Taichi witnessing Arata & Chihaya playing against each other) and 173(Chihaya's reply to Arata's confession).

I feel that she is trying to sort out her feelings. The love triangle is back to square 1, officially leaning towards Arata but I do think it's leaning towards Taichi.

I mean that for Chihaya karuta=Arata essentially. Taichi was always a dear friend, but he was a friend before karuta and though she wanted the 3 of them to be bound by karuta, Taichi was bound by friendship/love.

And for a long time I thought that for Arata karuta = his grandpa. But then he went and said that he always played as if he's in that room in his Tokyo apartment with Chihaya. That's where I realised that at that point in time Arata was probably short of becoming someone like Shinobu-chan, playing karuta all by himself, but Chihaya actually sort of reintroduced karuta to him and her impact was absolutely huge.

I don't think that Chihaya is actually consciously in love with any of them at this moment, but I do think that Arata was sort of a beacon in her life, somewhat of a goal (along with being a queen) that she was striving too. I think it'd be hard for her, as single-minded as she is, to divide her whole life's meaning that is full of Arata and her love life. Not now, but in the future. So my guess if she's gonna end up with one of them, it's more likely to be Arata. I'm not excluding the option of it being Taichi or them just staying friends as 3 though.

Also I think I've read somewhere that the mangaka said in some interview that she didn't intent to have Taichi to be this big of a character, that he unexpectedly grew way bigger than planned. So there's that too. But that was a long time ago, my memory might be inaccurate.

Overall it's not a matter of whether I like a pairing or not, I just think that that's where it'll go.

When talking of my personal opinion I was really Taichi x Chihaya the whole way up until after his confession. While I think that his love to her is really beautiful and sad, and heartbreaking and I really-really rooted for him.

Like really this is me every chapter...

1a4e87b4fbaa14e7fd55b55ada18e067.gif

I also think that it has done everything it could for his growth as a person and the best thing for him to grow further would be to sort of get over it. Not in a 'give up' way, but in a positive way of looking forward to new things in his life while cherishing his friends and the memories of his first love sort of way.

But that's my take ofc, who knows what will happen and how characters will grow. I'm looking forward to it.

I think I get what you mean but not really sure do I agree or disagree with your point of view. But I want to add that she couldn't see that she was playing against Arata until Taichi arriouldn

I do think that Karuta = Grandpa for Arata until he quit Karuta in middle school cause of his Grandpa's death.

IMO, she thinks she likes Arata, but she got confused when she couldn't see Arata until Taichi came. And the flashback is from childhood, meaning she can only see Arata when Taichi is with her. She's trying to sort out her feelings. Since it's weird she couldn't see the guy she has interest in when the guy she rejected isn't around.

I think the writer was lying when she claimed that Taichi is bigger than she planned. I feel like her plan was to make Taichi the underdog in Karuta. By making it seems like Taichi is simply the supporter/love interest, it makes it more interesting to watch his developments. Since people won't be expecting him to become Meijin or anything.

I am a massive Taichi x Chihaya shipper but I do prioritize Taichi winning over Arata in Meijin challenger over ending up with Chihaya. I assumed you maybe 1 of those insisting Arata will end up with Taichi because of whatever setup at the start. It maybe a luxury to hope for Taichi winning over Arata and ending up with Chihaya at the same time. But based on the developments, I feel that this is the most logical conclusion for this series? Like the writer spend so much time on writing Taichi x Chihaya while Arata x Chihaya moments is quite sparse for majority of the series.

I do think it will be good if Taichi can get over his crush for Chihaya. But based on the recent chapters, he don't seems to be. The best time for Taichi to start to get over with Chihaya is after training with Suou arc.

Yes, I think Chihaya is really confused atm. I think she isn't ready to romance in general at this point in her life.

I didn't even read the interview, it was sort of a quote, so it might have been misinterpreted.

I'm with you on that one. Taichi for Meijin!

Honestly at this point I don't really know. My feeling is Chihaya x Arata over Chihaya x Taichi, but it more of a 60/40 sort of feeling. I'm not particularly sure in any outcome at this point really.

I think that overall for me it's more of a manga about character's personal growth rather than romance. To me rather than writing Taichi x Chihaya or Arata x Chihaya the author spent so much time on writing each character grow as a person. Way less time was spent on Arata, but then he was already way ahead and he already has teh balance that Chihaya is looking for.

And what I've noticed is that the manga so far has been rather realistic in the sense that nobody can have it all, you win some and then you lose some. Taichi Meijin and Taichi x Chihaya seems to be too many wins.

But then there might be another take on the story whatsoever. In the sense of Taichi changing his approach not only to karuta, but to Chihaya as well. And if that happens, I'm looking forward to it.

I really like this conversation tbh. 'Cause everyone takes something different from teh same source and it's really interesting to compare.

---

But really I totally ship a number of crackpot pairings. Like Taichi x Shinobu-chan and Chihaya x Sudo. hurrplz.png

Sometimes I feel like just breaking this triangle in a more unconventional way, rather than Chihaya staying with either of them.

Yes, come again. Typo.

I read the same thing on other sites so I do think the writer really said that.

I think Chihayafuru has been spending way lesser time on Arata's growth. But we are getting his character development in the current arc! Hopefully, we get more in his journey to becoming Meijin. Since I am sure Arata will definitely become Meijin in the year after. More of growth as a character rather than growth in karuta skills.

But Chihaya will be winning it all. She will end up with whoever she choose and become Queen at the same time.

The way some of the scenes are written is on the ambiguous side which makes it fun for discussion.

I also ship crackpot pairings like Shinobu x Taichi. I find it interesting how this ship is never a thing with the number of shared connections.

I don't consider Chihaya x Sudo a crackship since Chihaya has spent more time with him than Arata & Taichi in preparation for Queen qualifiers.

A crack theory: What if Chihaya has a crush on Taichi since the start of the High school arc?

Well all her actual goals are karuta-related. She doesn't have a romance goal and I don't see her getting in a good uni if she'll get into one at all. So she only has one goal technically. While both Taichi and Arata have 2-3: karuta, Chihaya, life goal (doctor for Taichi, character development for Arata). I do see them winning some, failing at others and maybe acquiring others some time later.

Shinobu x Taichi actually makes perfect sense to me. Shinobu is sort of like Taichi's mom personality-wise, she's also the type that'd be approved by his mom, also their families are more on the same level and it seems like Taichi's karuta has a potential of becoming something like Arata's to Shinobu too. I'd like to see them interact more so much!

Chihaya x Sudo is completely adorable and I actually think Sudo has a low-key crush on her. hurrplz.png

I was actually playing with the thought that Chihaya is secretly in love with Taichi for a long time. She didn't have any interest in whether Arata has a girlfriend, unlike with Taichi and many more things that happened, etc. but what happened with his confession... wouldn't she feel like revealing her feelings when Taichi was all like 'can't play karuta anymore' then? Whatever reason she had for keeping them a secret would be inferior to getting Taichi back to karuta for her, wouldn't it?

She can get into good University through recommendation as the best in Karuta.

Agree with you on Taichi x Shinobu and Sudo x Chihaya. I rather have Chihaya ending up with Sudo then no 1.

I think she has a crush on Taichi since the start of High school arc.

She probably even got into Mizusawa for him. She has mentioned that she was focused on studying so she didn't even watch Queen match. In the movie version of Chihayafuru, Taichi has no girlfriend at the start and got into Mizusawa cause of Chihaya.

She has to keep her feelings hidden at the start because he had a girlfriend. The main purpose of Taichi's girlfriend is to mislead the readers into thinking Chihaya don't have a crush on Taichi. The writer has also put in a lot effort in reminding the readers that Taichi is in love with Chihaya. The entire Taichi cup arc is just her trying to get a kiss from Taichi.

I think she was too emotional and couldn't find a chance to do it? Or her mind is filled with 'Taichi kissed me!' so she can't really think of anything else when he said that.

Well that would be awesome, wouldn't it? Chihaya secretly being in love with Taichi.  rlytearpls.png

The author did say:

The love triangle between them is rather delicately poised―there’s a sense that once one of them moves, they’ll never be able to go back to how they were before; it’s quite tense for me, depicting this. I’d like to be able to convey the sense of ‘a love that cannot be undone’.

So maybe Chihaya has that feeling that their x3 friendship will crumble.

That will be the best. Especially with how Taichi seems to be very into her. A lot people feel bad for Taichi & it will be interesting if it turns out she is as into him. Or she is more into him if she got into Mizusawa for him. This will also make Chihaya seems like a much more complex character.

I think Chihaya should just gather the 2 boys and tell both boys at the same time clearly what they mean to her.

From Chapter 84(after Chihaya accidentally went into the boys room).

I feel like something happened between 2nd & 3rd panel. Like she stretched over or something. Maybe she kissed him while he was asleep?

In the 1st 2 panels, her shirt is tucked in. But in the 3rd panel, you can see her tummy. While she placed her hands around her heart.

Chihayafuru movie otp end game spoiler

Read about it on some site

Are you sure you want to know?

Her reply to Arata's confession is she wants to be the number 1 in the world in Karuta. She didn't end up with either of the boys.

I'm wrong, luckily I said I am 90% sure and it ended up on the 10%.

I am leaning towards Taichi x Chihaya in the manga because of the amount of time spent on it. But anime can go either way since they will be cutting a lot.

Yes. I'd be pretty disappointed if the mangaka spoiled her ending for either anime or movie.

I do think it's possible for the anime if it's ending around the same time as the manga.

-

Harada also didn't become the Meijin in the movie. When I watched the special videos implying Harada playing against Suou, I thought at least he can become Meijin in the movie.

Among male characters, I want Harada to become a Meijin most badly.

I don't think Taichi really cares about becoming a Meijin. Arata will definitely become eternal Meijin in the manga.

While Harada has been working on his Meijin/Queen dream longer than any character in the main ensemble.

If it's around the same time with manga or after, then yes, I expect the ending to be the same.

Do we know that the manga is ending soon though? I'm not so sure it'll end close to each other. The pace is rather slow, anime is set to be aired in 2019, so even if it'll air at the end of the year, we have a little bit over 1,5 years which is ~20 chapters. Seems way too little to me. But I guess it does depend on what happens and could be wrapped up in that amount of time.

And then there's the question of whether it'll end when they graduate from high school too. While ending it with their high school seems like a good place, technically there's nothing that stops it from continuing. Was it announced somewhere?

I agree,I want Harada to win the title too.

No. I am estimating the anime to be aired in Jan or March 2019 with 13 or 25eps. There was budget issues in latter half of S2 so I can't see it being longer than that.

Chihayafuru is serialised on a Bi-monthly magazine/ 2 chapters per month if there is no break. If it ends on mid April 2019, 20+ chapters.

I think it's just right or even a bit longer so I am thinking of possibly a less than 10 chapters of University arc.

The pace is slow but Meijin/Queen qualifier arc took around 13 chapters and they were playing against a few opponents. The highlight of the current arc is Arata vs Taichi and I am estimating 10-15 chapters. Queen/Meijin arc can be done in 10 chapters.

It wasn't announced but I don't think it will go on much further based on what has happened in the story.

It feels like Chihayafuru has completed Harada's story and he's a major character.

Suo's issue can be easily solved with Taichi's request if the writer wanted to. Shinobu is also changing.

Chihaya - Choose to challenge to be the Queen while studying for entrance exam. Will her parents allow her to continue playing competitive Karuta if she failed to get into University?

Taichi - It feels like this is the only time Taichi has a chance to win against Arata. Also the only time he can truly devote himself onto Karuta. Harada told Taichi to only claim he can never win against Arata after he spent his entire youth. I do believe 'the entire youth' refers to his days in High School.

Arata - There are more good players in the East than the West. I can see Arata improving his playing skills if he study in Tokyo & play against stronger players that he didn't play with all his life. If the story going to wrap up with Arata becoming East Meijin challenger & eventually Meijin, he will have to compete against Harada for sure. I don't feel like there is anything else to write about Harada.

For OTPs,

The 'Se' poem is definitely a hint on what prevented the OTP from getting together in this series. The first card Chihaya took from Arata. (Arata also took it back from Chihaya in Mizusawa vs Fujioka, but this maybe just the writer misleading the readers.)

Taichi x Chihaya - Taichi has already confessed to Chihaya. The rock between them is Arata in 'Se' poem if this is the end game. Chihaya excessively worshipping(Arata is 'God of Karuta') Arata has prevented their relationship from advancing into a couple. Chihaya is frustrated with Taichi always doing things alone and not telling her. The not telling part can be easily solved if they get together & she expressed that she wants to know and do everything with him.

Arata x Chihaya - Arata has already confessed to Chihaya. The rock between them is the distance in 'Se' poem, can be solved when Arata study in Tokyo. They will be able to advance their relationship further. Maybe they will face a few problems after they get together. I am not a shipper and I don't remember hint of any problem they maybe facing when they get together.

Oh it's twice a months. The translation is released irregularly and by volumes, so I just assumed it's once a month.

I do agree that it'll most likely end with high school plus maybe a tiny bit of uni or a view in the future. Plot-wise it makes perfect sense.

I just I just loathe to say my goodbyes to the story. warstarplz.png

I just think it's too early for him to win Mejin and honestly one of the reasons why I feel like 20 chapters is too little is that there's still so much to explore in Arata's character. It could be left on "and so he went..." type of thing ofc, but I want to see it play out rather than mangaka leaving it to our imagination.

In Harada vs Suo, Suo was upset that it's internet broadcast instead of tv broadcast. It was showed that his relatives was trying to figure out how to stream it and he was trying to guide them.

I feel like Arata is very overpowered and simply lacked that extra push. That he can definitely get from Taichi winning against him.

If the anime airs in June or Sep 2019, still possible for around 10 chapters of University arc to speed through Arata's journey to becoming a Meijin.

Ah, the story with Suo... Honestly I don't understand where it's going. Hos eyesight is deteriorating, so he won't be able to play competitively for that much longer.

Getting affirmation from relatives in not that much or that difficult. I think he could've just recorded that stuff and came home and showed it himself of he wanted it that much. I think it's more of him staying reserved than actual circumstances. I really like him, but his situation is also sort of sad.

Chapter 196 is out.

Taichi x Arata  game is so exiting. It's an interesting plan Taichi has there. It seems that he wants to bring Arata back to their time in elementary school and he wants to deconstruct and transform their experiences to something entirely different. For Arata is was a period that give him a lot: a mental safe place, a renewed love to karuta, friendship. Yet for Taichi it was quite the opposite, the place of darkness and shame and this weakness, it was rejection, the feeling of inferiority and his most loathed thing - the feeling of being a coward and the feeling of being viewed as a coward and most of all the fear of Chihaya knowing and viewing him as a coward. Arata's mental safe place was already taken away by Chihaya when she beat him, so now Taichi is up to take everything else away.

I'm loving it. rlytearpls.png

Also it started raining which is bad for Chihaya.

The is so up Taichi's alley, it hurts.
