Do you think school is necessary?

As the question says, do you think school is really important or necessary?

I mean when we get over with all the bs they teach us throughout the almost 13 years of our life we use almost none of the shit they teach us in the real world. and even if you want to say to continue the studies in some higher education, uni (you only use like 10% of what we learned in these factory institution called schools, of course depending on the course you take but yet again you only use max 20% of the things you learned in school).

yes i know they teach us how to write, read, count numbers and speak but this sort of stuff can be learned outside of going through 13 years of torture (other than making friends and creating memories with these friends).

Also in the end the piece of paper, the so called diploma means nothing once you are out of school, it doesnt even weigh much if say you want to find some kind of work (in a company or something).

So yea why do we do it? Why do we force ourselves (ok maybe there some exceptions where people like going there) in becoming the product of the society, basically a manifestation of a factory's product (factory being the school)?

i am on my second break today from revising but this sort of thoughts make me dis/unmotivated to move forwards :// and here i am making this thread

So yea I would like to hear your opinions on this.

On the academic side, I kinda think it depends on what your career path is. Like what you learned at school will really help you for some professions, and then for others it is of no use at all.

I do however think the whole rote-learning aspect of school is a big problem.

School is useful for other reasons though.

Perhaps we should teach more practical skills in school. It's a disgrace that vocational schools are looked down upon and people graduating from high school really haven't learned much that is directly applicable to the workplace.

This is from an American perspective.

School isn't about what you learn in your subjects, but about learning how to behave in society.

why in would you want to subject to school's way of teaching how to behave in the society, and why in the world do we ever have to subject to how we should behave in the society when in the process it can hinder us from finding out what we really are or who we really are?

In my opinion, school IS necessary and sometimes the topics you learn are very useful later. However, most educational systems are outdated and just don't work anymore. We should focus on improving this system. Memorizing facts for tests and regurgitating them on a piece of paper just to forget them one day later is something that I don't understand how can still be done in this age and year.

Up to a point. My high school years were spent hanging out with my cousins and friends doing hood rat shit. Playing video games, sports, hanging out, ect....

Got my GED at 18 and enrolled into college, got a degree in General Studies two years later.

Current education system is outdated in my opinion. It teaches the wrong things and should be spent more on environmental, social, and cultural studies. Especially environmental, we have one planet, need to start teaching why and how we should respect it. Social issues as well that can help the youth interact better with other cultures and ethnicity's.

Technology moves forward and yet it seems like people aren't. We have stupid people using smart phones. Technology advances but the way we educate people hasn't, that seriously needs to change.

yeah, school is neccessary

but on the other hand, in most countries high school isn't compulsory, and you can choose between various types of schools

also, higher education and university is even more voluntary, yet people still choose to study subjects that won't get them a job, so it's as much as useful as prior 13 years of schooling

My teacher has a chart of all the types of math, reading, science, etc things you learn in school and how they help you in life. You may not use it, but there will be a time you may need to use something you learned in statistics or even chemistry.

So yes, I do believe school is necessary.

School is important and necessary.
Although u don't use most of the subjects, u'll still have some general knowledge and the most important thing is it helps to stimulate your brain to grow/develop (Socializing, analyzing some difficult stuff, etc)

schooling actually helps you become smarter and make smarter decisions, even on other subjects not related to school

well it actually made me dumber and more messed (thoughts are all over the place), i am doing the IB (international baccalaureate)

i dont know i consider all my decisions "smart" even the so called "wrong" decisions (they arent even wrong cause without them i wouldnt have come to the decisions that lead me to a so called "better path")

i am not even sure what i am trying to say with this by answering, sorry my bad

Though i would like to say yes school is unnecessary, in reality it really is. Some things could be changed i do agree.

But Not everyone have parents who are educated enough to teach them.

School is also important in a sense that it teach children independency because they live in a sort of artificial society while still be protected in some ways. They learn how to socialize, they make friends lose others, how to take failures, how to takes exams, deal with the stress (which are necessary to get a diploma), how to speak in public etc...

I don't know for the american system but in France i think we learn a lot of useful things especially in History/Georgraphy, Economics and Sociology too which makes you understand more how the world works (though i hate to be forced to learn). Philosophy, learn how to think for yourself and seek the truth. Mathematics learn how to search, do basic calculation (useful during the sales aren't they), P.E, learn how to take care of your body through physical excercise....

I dislike the forced aspect of it though, many things could be improved, and i also dont see the point of psittacism.
