china's looking to develop their own (state-approved) idol industry.

a lot of south korean companies have been accepting chinese investment money for years now, allowing chinese agencies an inside look at training programs, styling, and concepts that they're applying in china (yuehwa, banana ent, etc, the list goes on). now there's no benefit for the state to promote korean culture and celebrities any longer. china does this to so many industries.........

edit// when watching idol producer, I realized that despite ripping off every detail of the show from Mnet, they don't allow a single korean word/lyric to be broadcasted - even when showing clips from kyulkyung and chengxiao's groups, they ONLY broadcast excerpts where lyrics are in english or chinese - never any korean. that means for pristin they had to loop the "wee woo wee woo" chorus LOL

This is so true and not just for Korea, there's also SNH48 who's popular in China, it was the chinese sister group of AKB. They pretty much learned everything of AKB and after a few years they suddenly broke the contract terms and separate from the japanese side. and there's nothing Japan can do against it since chinese agencies will always win in China anyway. They did the same with Kpop or korean entertainment (like the shows etc.)

China looks like they want to develop their own idol industry and also variety shows that are alike to korean ones. and also improve their drama industry. I've seen a lot of chinese dramas get uploaded on Youtube with english subs, I'm wondering if it's done officially? kinda like KBS with KBS World.

imagine being this petty

how about china bans ALL foreign acts? how about they start separating themselves from the rest of the world like n.korea does?

they're just singers, geez

yep, it's because china purposely has very lax patent laws - the state encourages domestic companies to copy international products as a way to "catch up", then they either ban outside products (apple, facebook, etc) or impose heavy import taxes (cars, electronics). wechat and alibaba wouldn't be as big as they are today if they hadn't been allowed to rip off preliminary code from american apps. it saves on "research and development" costs and time.

outside companies know this but they still play along because the chinese market is so big that they're willing to get ripped off as long as they can get even small access to the consumer base. it's no different with kpop companies, variety shows, dramas. no matter how many disgruntled articles mnet puts out about idol producer copying p101, it won't make any difference in china

akb48 has decently sized fandom in china I'm pretty sure the biggest reason for not taking them to court is the fear of their fans seeing it aks ( the management agency of 48 groups in japan) bullying a chinese company. And of course the there is big chance of losing the case that you mentioned.

China's Cpop groups sucks. China should follow Taiwan's music industry instead. At least it has some degree of originality and quality music.

apple isn't banned in china (for now) but that's partially because they caved to demands to host data centers on chinese soil, essentially allowing the state access to their data and code - idc how much apple tries to assure chinese users that their data is private because as long as their data centers are in china, then they're as "protected" as wechat convos lol.

google is a better example tho

it's bc china's too obsessed with making idols into young communist leaders............ (i'm not exaggerating, after TF boys blew up here they are singing about being heroes of young communism)
