is he popular ? he has a lot of movies and dramas but he doesn't seem that memorable ? he was in 4 dramas and 5 movies last year and has 6 movies coming out in 2018 and i still can't name any big role he has or had  is it just me ?

He is quite pupular among people who are interested in ikemen young actors but sadly he didn't have his breakout role yet. This year he's starring in "Marmalade Boy" movie which is adaptation of popular manga so maybe... Idk. I wish him success tho, he's good enough to be lead actor in bigger project.

yes i noticed that and i actually watched the anime years ago and it was good.but the manga is from the early 90`s and the anime was originally aired in mid 90`s so i wonder how its going to do with the current youth . That being said I'm sure it going to have a lot of nostalgia audience that were teens or preteens when the manga or the anime were being  published and aired

His latest movie, River`s Edge live action, is now being screened in Berlin Film Festival, which is among the most reputable film festival worldwide. Back then he was pretty unremarkable yet he has been through leaps and bounds and becoming more reliable as an actor.

The current young actresses are a lot better than the current ikemen-but-can't-act young actors, but still the truly talented ones like Nikaido Fumi and Matsuoka Mayu for example are still being eclipsed in popularity.
