After FOX 4’s Weekend Sports anchor took to Twitter to say that figure skating is not a sport, Olympic figure skater Vincent Zhou responded by offering some advice.

“I have the utmost respect for figure skaters, only a few people in the universe can do it and they deserve my praise. But it’s not a sport,†Edward Egros said on Twitter, echoing the sentiment of another user.

It was enough a statement to catch the attention of Zhou, the 17-year-old making his Olympic debut as one of the fresh faces of USA’s figure skating team. Zhou, who counts the triple-axel mastering Mirai Nagasu and internet enchanting Adam Rippon as teammates, fired back.

“Your job is to be a sports reporter. Figure skating is not a sport to you. Stick to reporting on “real sportsâ€, do your job, and we’ll do ours,†he wrote.

Zhou will be competing on Feb. 16. “I feel like I’m ready to skate the two biggest programs of my life,†Zhou said in a news conference on Tuesday. “I’ve been preparing extensively for my eight minutes on the ice.â€

Do you agree with Edward Egros?

How is it not a sport? Running is a sport, skating is a sport, gymnastics is a sport, what makes figure skating not a sport?

I think it's due to it being based on refereeing? Since it's not a sport that puts the practitioners directly against eachother.

I’ve noticed this sentiment a lot, for some people artistic sports (gymnastics, ice skating etc.) are not real sports. I don’t get it, what makes artistic sports so stigmatized? Is it because they attract a different demographic? Should a sport appeal to football fans at large to be considered a true sport? Any activity that involves physical exertion and skill where people comete for entertianment is a sport, that’s the definition I get when I google it. That means figure skating is a sport. All artistic sports are sports. Just because it’s not your thing, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t count as a sport. We simply have different preferences.

If refereeing was the reason why that reporter refused to acknowledge figure skating and women's gymnastics as a sport,

then, by that logic, i wonder if he considers boxing as a sport (especially if it's a mixed decision).

And if the reason is bc there's no direct competition from one contestant against another,

then by that logic, i wonder if he considers bowling as a sport.

I'd say that Bowling does put the contestants against eachother actually, but I still find it difficult to admit that it's a sport..

Boxing does have an aspect of judgement but it's also possible to win directly by knocking the opponent. Still, it's a martial art which is a bit different to ordinary sports...

Figure skating, athletics, dancing, martial art technique exhibitions, drifting, horse shows, diving etc are all assessment/judgement sports, which some people don't want to consider sports because they're purely based on the decisions of a judge. I personally consider them sports but a special division of sports. You could just as well call it an art contest, which in many ways would be more reflective of what it actually is.

No? An art contest is totally subjective, Figure skating has a huge tecnichal component, there's a correct way to do jumps with correct edges, judges count rotations, there's various spins with their own tecnique, skaters must put different moves in the field, you can't do an ina baeur whatever there's a correct tecnichal way, sure, there are the voice interpretation of music and performance on the protocols but the rest are atletic, technical points.

Judges are human and make mistakes, i'm the first to be angry at them but equaliting it to art contest where there's rules of atletics in what figure skaters do it's incorrect, there's atletic gestures with rules everyone has to do.

Ice Dance is another ball park, imo

These people practice to do spins and jump on hard ice on a blade while wearing a skin thin leotard that offer 0 protection if they fell. Compare that to football players that have paddings on a grass field. If skater falls, they will likely brake bones.

Also we laugh at skaters funny faces during skate but for their skin to push up so much in motion means they are generating good amount of force with their spins. This guy is too far up his ass to downplay them like this
