Suits12-00289.jpg

An old enemy is back at the firm, making new threats and throwing everyone into a tailspin. His only purpose seems to be to create havoc among the lawyers at Kang & Ham, and he has a way of digging at their weaknesses and forcing them to react. Kang-seok and Yeon-woo are just beginning to work as a team — can they survive this latest hurricane?

EPISODE 12: “If you have blind faith about your ideals, you’ll be betrayed by the reality.â€

Suits12-00002.jpg Suits12-00027.jpg

Director Ham announces to the firm that he’s coming back. He confesses that he acted immorally when he was an acting partner, but adds that if he keeps hiding out of shame, it will only become his weakness. In the interest of transparency, he tells everyone that two years ago, he embezzled from a client’s account.

He asks them to give him a chance to show that he’s changed, and promises to focus on what’s best for Kang & Ham. His sappy speech seems to win over many of the associates, but Kang-seok whispers to Yeon-woo to go to his office immediately and not to let Director Ham catch him.

Director Ham goes straight to Kang-seok and Ha-yeon and wonders out loud how he would have repaid Ha-yeon for sending Kang-seok to threaten him, if he were still a bad guy. Oh sure, if. He says that he told his daughter everything about the embezzlement and his affair. He tells Kang-seok that if there’s something you want to keep, you have to turn into a demon to keep it, then gives a dark chuckle and claims he’s only joking.

Suits12-00049.jpg Suits12-00048.jpg

In Ha-yeon’s office, she tells Kang-seok that their deal is off since he failed to keep Director Ham from returning. She orders him to send Attorney Kim back to the prosecutor’s office, but when he balks, she gives him a choice… fire Attorney Kim, or resign himself. He says that the fair thing is for him to resign. But he also says that if Director Ham came back this quickly, it’s because he’s prepared and will go after the weakest link first. He tells Ha-yeon that the firm needs him, and that Director Ham isn’t here to become second-in-command, so they need as many people on their side as possible.

Meanwhile, Geun-shik pesters Da-ham at her desk, asking whose side she’s on, Ha-yeon’s or Director Ham’s. She correctly guesses that he’s trying to figure out which side is most likely to get him promoted to senior partner. She thinks about it carefully… then says she doesn’t care. HA. But Geun-shik waves a pair of tickets to “Man of La Mancha†under her nose, a musical she’s always wanted to see. She whines that she doesn’t know the answer to his question, so he tucks the tickets away and says that his doors are always open.

Yeon-woo asks Kang-seok what kind of person Director Ham is, and he replies that he’s a viper — he may have shed his skin, but he hasn’t changed. Since it was Kang-seok who had Director Ham kicked out of the firm, he’s sure that he’s back for revenge. He warns Yeon-woo not to catch Director Ham’s attention, but tells him not to worry too much for now, because he’s not his weakness.

He doesn’t explain what he means, just asks about Yeon-woo’s grandmother and whether she’s still in Haram Sanatorium. The hospital has hired Kang & Ham regarding the union strike, and Kang-seok says that the union leader is so clever that she’s already fooled two of their attorneys.

Suits12-00091.jpg Suits12-00093.jpg

Yeon-woo wonders if his grandmother should move to a new hospital, but Kang-seok says he’s about to put an end to the negotiations. He and Yeon-woo meet with the union leader and her attorney, where Kang-seok informs her cheerfully that he’s not like the previous lawyers she met with.

He offers a ten percent raise, a nurse’s lounge, and regular breaks, but makes it clear that the hospital won’t be hiring more nurses. He tells the union leader that as one of the best sanatoriums in the country, the hospital spends a lot of money on facility maintenance and the best medical equipment.

When she asks why they can spend money on machines and not people, Yeon-woo points out that the money was donated specifically for medical equipment, so using it for other expenses would be illegal. She sneers that they just proved they’re exactly like the previous lawyers, and starts to leave. Kang-seok warns her that if she leaves, there will be no more negotiation, but she goes anyway.

Suits12-00114.jpg

Later, Kang-seok tells Yeon-woo that they need a restraining order to stop the nurses from striking. Yeon-woo says it will be difficult to prove that the strike is illegal, but Kang-seok asks if he’d still feel that way if a nurse endangered his grandmother’s health or safety.

Yeon-woo remembers passing the striking nurses the other night. He says they can get the restraining order on the basis that they’re being too loud and disturbing the patients. Kang-seok says they don’t just need to buy time — they need to find their weak spot and strike.

Geun-shik tries to suck up to Ha-yeon at the office, but she purposely ignores him. He sighs that he shouldn’t plant flowers that won’t bloom, while in the elevator, Ha-yeon figures out that he’s trying to decide who to side with.

COMMENTS

The first half of this episode really didn’t say anything that we didn’t already know. I mean, Director Ham is back. We already know he’s a bad dude without a shred of moral fiber, and we already know that Kang-seok and Ha-yeon want him gone from the company. All he really did was to throw his weight around and make a lot of vague threats, but we still don’t know why he’s come back now, or what his intent is. The only new thing that happened was Geun-shik getting a big head about being Director Ham’s toady, but he gets a big head about everything so that was no surprise.

Then, in the second half of the episode, Kang-seok and Director Ham finally had a good old-fashioned verbal battle, and suddenly things heated up. I loved the angry, masculine energy flying around the room when they showed their true emotions towards each other instead of sugarcoating every interaction. I’ve been wanting for Kang-seok to bump up against a true match for his strong personality, and while David Kim was interesting, he was more underhanded and snarky than a true equal to Kang-seok.

But Director Ham is someone whose mere presence in a room can be construed as a threat, and he proved it by buddying up to Yeon-woo, who we know is a bit too willing to give people the benefit of the doubt. Director Ham may just be the person that finally makes Kang-seok lose his iron control over his temper, particularly if he’s threatening his relationship with Yeon-woo, and I can’t wait to see Kang-seok blow up.

Suits12-00283.jpg

The writing in this version of Suits can be a little on-the-nose at times, often clunky and expositional. In real life, lawyers wouldn’t explain how the law works to each other, but it’s understandable in a drama where there’s so much legal information to convey to the audience. But there are some truly beautiful moments when the characters are simply talking about life, such as Yeon-woo and Ji-na’s first conversation about fears and “rabbits,†and in those scenes, I find myself really connecting with the characters. I particularly loved Da-ham and Ji-na’s wine-tinted talk about not regretting the things you didn’t try, because it revealed a lot about both ladies.

Ji-na doesn’t hide how she feels about Yeon-woo (I love how open she is with her heart), but Da-ham also gave herself away when she told Ji-na to go for it, unlike her. I’ve suspected that she’s harbored feelings for someone — most likely Kang-seok — for quite some time, and by confessing that she regrets not taking romantic chances, she pretty much admitted that she loves him but has never had the courage to tell him. I hope that seeing Ji-na take a chance with Yeon-woo inspires Da-ham to do the same, and I can’t wait to see the expression on Kang-seok’s face when she does. (Though honestly, I wouldn’t even be mad if she let Geun-shik convince her to date him if Kang-seok isn’t up for it, because Geun-shik wouldn’t be nearly so annoying with a strong lady like Da-ham keeping him in line.)

I appreciate that Yeon-woo is finally learning how to work for his client while using his compassion for the underdog to smooth the way. He did that wonderfully when he negotiated with the nurses, but unfortunately, he let Director Ham manipulate him into it right after Kang-seok told him never to talk to his opponents alone again. At least Yeon-woo tried to confirm Kang-seok’s approval, but when he couldn’t reach him, he should have waited, because Kang-seok had information that made Yeon-woo’s deal impossible. Yeon-woo’s worst flaw is thinking that his moral goodness gives him the right to act on his own, which would be fine under most circumstances, but again, we’re talking about tricky legal situations. He’s not even a real lawyer, and Kang-seok is right to expect him not to run off making deals without guidance. Still, it was horrible of Kang-seok to use Yeon-woo’s inside information of bullying to blindside the union leader, and between that and their fight, I’m not looking forward to the upcoming rift in their relationship.

Suits13-00088.jpg

  • Things are looking better at Kang & Ham, despite the disruption that Director Ham’s presence causes. Kang-seok seems to have gotten his ethical values back in line, and Yeon-woo is feeling more confident both personally and professionally. But the office is thrown into a crisis when the last person they ever expect to make a mistake does something that could threaten all of their futures.

EPISODE 13: “The moment you fly up with wings called lies, you will not be landing.â€

Suits13-00017.jpg Suits13-00020.jpg

Yeon-woo finds Director Ham waiting outside his apartment and they go somewhere to talk. Director Ham tells Yeon-woo that he knows how it feels to be betrayed by someone you trusted. He claims that he returned to admit his wrongdoings and pay for them, but Kang-seok and Ha-yeon are trying to stop him.

Back at the office, Attorney Kim asks Kang-seok why he’s lying that Yeon-woo is an attorney. Kang-seok just says that a lie doesn’t exist until it’s exposed, but he looks troubled. He waits for Yeon-woo at the toast truck the following morning and admits that he was wrong not to anticipate that Director Ham would target Yeon-woo as soon as he returned.

He also warns Yeon-woo that he may have to put him to use one day, but he promises that it won’t be in an emotional dispute against Director Ham. Yeon-woo tells Kang-seok that Director Ham came to his home yesterday, and that Director Ham wonders if Yeon-woo holds one of his weaknesses. But Yeon-woo says that Kang-seok’s weakness is his weakness, so his conclusion is that they need to protect one another, and Kang-seok bristles at the idea that he needs Yeon-woo’s protection.

Later, Da-ham informs Kang-seok that the family of a deceased man whose family died in a car accident has decided to sue the manufacturer… again. Yeon-woo outlines the situation — two years ago, Kang Young-ho was driving with his wife and son when their car ran into a tree. His wife and son died, and he sued the car manufacturer saying that the steering wheel was uncontrollable, but he lost the case. Da-ham tells Kang-seok that Young-ho killed himself recently, and his surviving daughter has filed a new lawsuit against Yuno Motors (their client) citing additional evidence regarding the original accident.

Suits13-00065.jpg Suits13-00067.jpg

Geun-shik introduces Attorney Kim to Director Ham, who asks why she isn’t working as Kang-seok’s associate. Attorney Kim states that Kang-seok got her here, but she wants to be on Geun-shik and Director Ham’s side. Director Ham welcomes her and offers to arrange a get-together soon, and he holds Geun-shik back as Attorney Kim leaves.

He tells Geun-shik that he’s aware that Attorney Kim was a talented prosecutor, but that he had someone else in mind to be Geun-shik’s associate. He asks if Geun-shik’s goal is truly to win against Kang-seok and take what he owns as trophies.

Yeon-woo lurks outside Ji-na’s office, and when she comes out, he blurts out a “sorry†for missing their dinner date last night. Although she says she knows that he’s busy, it’s obvious to Yeon-woo that she’s pissed. She agrees that she has a quick temper, but blames him for letting her down. She says the worst part was that she couldn’t reach him, and Yeon-woo perks up a little to think that she worried about him.

Suits13-00097.jpg

He follows her around the building, asking cutely if she was worried, and she says he’s awfully shameless for someone claiming to be sorry. He says he’s sorry but also happy, because it feels like they’re dating. Ji-na huffs that he’s probably never dated anyone before, and he gets indignant, then admits sheepishly that he hasn’t.

Ji-na tells Yeon-woo to go memorize some books on dating, but he says he can only memorize things he understands, but she’s got him all confused. She says he already knows what to do and is doing a good job, confusing him even further, hee. He invites her to dinner again tonight, and when he’s gone, Ji-na grumbles affectionately, “We kissed, so we’re obviously in a relationship. I thought he was a genius, but he’s nothing but a fool.â€

Geun-shik tells Attorney Kim that he’ll never abandon her as his associate, and she rolls her eyes so hard, ha. He says that Director Ham is planning to get rid of Kang-seok, and she says dutifully that he’s the only one who can truly fight against Kang-seok. He tells her his number one rule — always take cases to court, or as he calls it, “the ring.â€

COMMENTS

I’m still loving the way that Yeon-woo and Ji-na’s relationship is progressing. They’ve finally gotten comfortable with being honest about their feelings, so it’s just cute now when Ji-na gets grouchy with Yeon-woo when he’s annoying, or when Yeon-woo keeps confessing then immediately pretending that he doesn’t really like Ji-na that much. It was great when Grandma told Ji-na that she’ll need to be the one in charge, because they both know that Yeon-woo is pretty innocent when it comes to relationships (friendly or otherwise). He’s a beta male despite his prodigious intellect, and he needs a strong woman to offset his tendency to hang back and let romantic opportunities pass him by.

And Ji-na steps into that role beautifully, now that she’s learned to express her strong opinions without being unfairly critical of Yeon-woo. She gives Yeon-woo the benefit of the doubt that he’s simply clueless, not deliberately hurtful, and she tells him exactly what she needs from him instead of expecting him to read her mind. It’s no surprise to me that Ji-na was the one to initiate a kiss both times, and I’m glad that she accepts that she’ll have to make the first moves in their relationship. I know that initially I didn’t think Yeon-woo and Ji-na would make a very good couple because they were so different, but now that they’re starting to understand one another, I actually think they fit together pretty perfectly.

Suits13-00287.jpg

I’ve been bracing myself for Da-ham to have a crisis, because she’s really the only character that so far, has escaped any negative consequences of all of these shady cases Kang-seok handles. I knew that finding that memo would send her into a tailspin she may not recover from, especially since she believed that she herself signed that she received it. Da-ham prides herself on doing an impeccable job as Kang-seok’s assistant, but losing and forgetting that memo would have been a huge mistake, if it hadn’t turned out to be a fake. So I don’t really blame Da-ham for going into panic mode and shredding it even after Yeon-woo’s warning, because as good of an employee as she is and as much as she prides herself on her work, her loyalty to Kang-seok is stronger. As much as he walks the legal tightrope, I’m only surprised that Da-ham didn’t get caught in the crossfire sooner.

I’m genuinely worried about Da-ham, because as much as she’s proven in the past that she does the right thing, in this case, her dilemma wasn’t strictly professional/legal. She’s pretty much admitted, at least to herself, that she has feelings for Kang-seok, so her instinct to protect him is both professional and personal. It’s no surprise that being forced to choose between shielding the man she respects and loves, and doing the morally and legally correct thing, nearly broke her. She was probably half out of her mind with fear for Kang-seok by the time she shredded the memo, which severely clouded her judgment. But what she did wasn’t just wrong, it was illegal, and I’m scared that losing her job is only the beginning of the repercussions she’s going to suffer for acting emotionally instead of logically.

Interestingly, I liked the softer side of Ha-yeon that we saw when she offered to fire Da-ham on Kang-seok’s behalf. So far we’ve mostly seen Ha-yeon as a cool, professional woman who’s fierce enough to play with the big boys, so I appreciated this chance to see her showing compassion for two people she obviously cares about very much. She knew that if Kang-seok had to fire Da-ham himself, after all their years together, that it would destroy both of them. I loved how Ha-yeon did the horrible but necessary deed with care and affection instead of anger and recriminations. I feel like it was thoughtful, and very deliberate, that her last words to Da-ham were not “please leave†but “thank you†— I believe that in her way, Ha-yeon was telling Da-ham that her years of loyalty are remembered and appreciated, and are not erased by the one wrong choice she made.

  • Suits: Perfect casting, mediocre drama. The first episode was almost an exact replica of the original version’s pilot, and it became more telling that the plotlines were poorly recycled into this watered-down Korean version as the series continued. I only watched for the characters, and despite the lazy writing, the Jang Dong-gun/Park Hyung-shik bromance was charming and exactly what I wanted. That tearjerking final episode was a little too idealistic for me, but it did its job of making me forget all the plot holes. Probably won’t rewatch this, but I would love to see this duo act together again. Make it happen, casting directors!

  • Suits: Episode 15

Suits15-00515.jpg

Yeon-woo has a lot to explain after winning the trial and destroying Da-ham in the process. Of course he had a plan, and it doesn’t end there, but his plans do have the unfortunate side effect of angering someone no matter what he does. He’ll have to stay on his toes as his enemies get closer to discovering his deep, dark secret, but he may also find some friends in unexpected places.

EPISODE 15: “When you lose your destination, look back on the path you’ve walked thus far.â€

Kang-seok stalks down the hallway at Kang & Ham, a grim look on his face. Yeon-woo breathlessly tries to stop him, but Kang-seok just glares at him furiously.

Earlier, Yeon-woo had gone to speak to CEO Seo of Yuno Motors. He called Director Ham then handed over the phone, and Director Ham told CEO Seo to answer Yeon-woo’s questions honestly.

At the firm, the partners vote on whether to allow Kang-seok to take the case against him to trial. Before that vote, Director Ham wants to vote on promoting Geun-shik to senior partner. He claims that their clients are concerned that the firm was sued and has made enemies with the prosecutor’s office, so he wants to keep talented personnel from leaving.

Suits15-00031.jpg Suits15-00035.jpg

The vote is almost declared a tie, except Ha-yeon notices that Kang-seok hasn’t voted. In his office, Geun-shik is going batty with waiting, even promising his goldfish that he’ll release her to a large river if he’s promoted. He gets a call with the vote results, and apologizes to his fish for not being able to free her — then he cackles that he was just joking. What is Kang-seok thinking??

Geun-shik saunters to the conference room to take his place as a senior partner, sending a saucy wink in Kang-seok’s direction. Ha-yeon starts the vote regarding Kang-seok’s case, and Director Ham announces that she promised to resign from her position if the vote goes against Kang-seok.

Kang-seok says that Director Ham talks like something illegal went on at the firm, and he asks for proof. In walks Yeon-woo, and Director Ham asks smugly what Kang-seok will do if he does have proof. Kang-seok says he’ll pay the price, and Director Ham offers a counter-deal — if Kang-seok wins, Director Ham will resign.

Suits15-00061.jpg

After a long look at Kang-seok, Yeon-woo plays a recording of his conversation with CEO Seo. CEO Seo says that after the quality control manager told him of the problem with the fault steering wheel, he met with Director Ham. He claims that Director Ham asked for all the details about the defect, and that it was Director Ham who wrote up the fake memo.

Kang-seok accuses Director Ham of hiding the truth about the faulty wheel. With CEO Seo’s written statement projected over Director Ham’s head, Kang-seok demands his resignation. Yeon-woo adds that David Kim had one copy of the memo that Director Ham wrote — the other was found in the archives. He says that Director Ham placed it there after coming back to the firm.

Director Ham denies ever going near the archives, Kang-seok agrees that they checked the CCTV footage, and discovered that Geun-shik placed the fake memo in the archives. Geun-shik splutters a denial, but Yeon-woo says that when Geun-shik replaced the files he used to brief Director Ham after his return to the firm, there was an extra file. Geun-shik sits down with a thump, realizing that he was used.

COMMENTS

I thought Yeon-woo was finally going to get his fistbump in this episode, but thinking back, I think I understand why Kang-seok didn’t do it. I felt like, by pushing Yeon-woo’s fist down instead, Kang-seok was saying that yes, Yeon-woo won the mock trial and he’s proud of him for that, but he’s not proud of the way Yeon-woo won. He won by betraying his mentor and badgering Da-ham until she cried and Kang-seok confessed to something he didn’t do. Yeon-woo’s win wasn’t something to congratulate, because he didn’t uphold the truth, which was that both Da-ham and Kang-seok are innocent of knowingly destroying evidence. So it’s good that he didn’t get a fistbump for that.

I think it’s sweet that Ji-na knows that Yeon-woo has something to tell her, something that will probably upset her, but that she’s willing to wait until he’s ready to tell her. She’s come a long way from the impatient, angry Ji-na we first met — that Ji-na would have demanded an immediate explanation, then been so furious she’d probably never have spoken to Yeon-woo again.

Now I’m not so afraid of her reaction when she learns the truth, because even by the legal definition, Yeon-woo didn’t defraud hermaliciously or for personal gain, she just got caught up in his lie about being a lawyer. I still think she’ll be upset, but I’m not so scared anymore that it’s something that will destroy their growing relationship.

Suits15-00535.jpg

I will confess that half the time, I have no idea what’s going on in this show. If I have any complaints, it’s that the show often contradicts itself and doesn’t explain the characters’ motives and behaviors. A lot of the law stuff is confusing, but mostly it’s the things the people do and say. For example, wasn’t there a big meeting in a recent episode where AK told Director Ham that she got this job because she knew about Yeon-woo’s secret, and Director Ham even confronted Yeon-woo about it? So why did Director Ham and Yeon-woo act like Director Ham just learned about it from AK in this episode? I also don’t quite understand what made Ha-yeon lose her faith in Kang-seok… he was proven innocent of evidence-tampering, so I can’t figure out why she’s suddenly angry with him and reluctant to trust him. He didn’t do anything untrustworthy.

But I do understand why she’s desperate enough to consider a merger with another firm, since innocent or not, Kang-seok’s reputation (and the firm by extension) has taken a huge hit and their clients are seeking new counsel. A merger would lose Ha-yeon a lot of her authority, but it would keep Kang & Ham from going bankrupt. But I don’t get why Ha-yeon listened to Director Ham even for a moment – I mean, come on, this is the man who embezzled from your clients, attacked you with a golf club, then came back and committed several illegal acts in order to take back control. Forget trusting him… why is he not in jail?? Yes, Director Ham’s behavior would reflect badly on Kang & Ham, but it will be a thousand times worse if it’s discovered that they hid his illegal actions. And all of the senior partners know what he did, so that “secret†is going to get out sooner or later. Ha-yeon doesn’t even have Kang-seok’s excuse for working with Director Ham, because she doesn’t know about Yeon-woo’s secret. The smart thing to do would be to report Director Ham to the police, make a public statement that his actions were not sanctioned by Kang & Ham and that they have taken steps to remove him from the firm entirely and forever.

It’s the show’s strength that, despite being confused a lot of the time, I’m still interested by the cases and the conflict, and I still want to know how it all ends. What will happen with the merger? Will Director Ham get his way or will Kang-seok uncover Kim & Jo’s weakness and save the firm? Will Yeon-woo’s secret be revealed, and how will the firm, and more importantly, Ji-na, react? Was that scene at the beginning of the show a foreshadowing of Yeon-woo’s downfall, or will it end up being another trick to save them all? Will be ever become a real lawyer? And will he everget that fistbump from Kang-seok?
