An emergency doctor in China died after he collapsed and was attended to in the same hospital where he served his nightshift. The doctor, 43-year-old Guo Qingyuan, was struck with chest pain, palpitations, and had difficulty breathing as he wrapped up his duty at the Qinghai University Affiliated Hospital on Wednesday, reports Xining Evening News.

Guo attended to at least 38 patients during his shift which was set to end at 8.30pm. However, he stayed until 11.40pm to properly turnover his work, reports the China News Service. The ER doctor received four hours of intensive care when he suffered from a seizure and died.

The Southern Metropolis News reports that he is survived by his wife, a doctor at the same hospital, and two children, one only a few months old and the other a 10-year-old.

Last Dec. 29, another doctor in China collapsed from a stroke and died following an 18-hour shift.

Zhao Bianxiang, also 43, was the head of respiratory medicine at the Yuci District People's Hospital in Jinzhong City. The Shanxi Evening News reports that she did not take a break since she began working at 6pm.

Awful news. amgplz.png

Rest in peace Dr Guo

Work hours are insane in East Asia, there's people dying regularly from overwork in Japan, South Korea & China. This has to be fixed by enforcing labour laws that protect workers by limiting the number of overtime hours (if there are any, they are obviously not working) & just hiring and training new workers (Dr Guo's hospital sounds severely understaffed).

Yeah I hear about that all the time. It's not a good thing. It's one of the things that stopped me from entering medicine in the first place lol. The work hours. I heard you got to be on call 24/7 and they call the work hours insane. This is in Western countries so I can't even imagine how bad the work hours would be in East Asia. I wish I was that selfless.
