What is it non-religous people dislike about religion?

Sorry if the title sounded accusatory, I couldn't think of a better way to phrase it. But recently as I was watching some of my favorite Christian youtubers I saw so many comments like "you guys are brainwashed" "religion is a disease" and some that were just plain hateful. So out of genuine curiosity, I'd like to know what y'all dislike about religion, Christianity in particular and if you agree that Christians are "brainwashed" per-say.

Thanks for answering, please be nice to one another!

You could make a thread but with it the other way around and it'd still be true...

I recognize it goes both ways, I was just asking about this particular way! If you'd like to know my thoughts on atheism you're welcome to pm me.

that I was forced to go there no matter what because if I dIDNT BELIVE IN GOD. IM GOING TO HELL.

well stepmom, According to your book i'm going to hell for many other reasons too.

Yeah I find being forced to go to church tends to drive a lot of people away from it.

maybe the fact that it claims they are dirty sinners for not believing in it?

Well everyone's a sinner, i'm a believer and i'm a sinner. Difference is I believe that i'm saved because i've repented in Jesus. I'd love to hear your perspective though.

The fact that you have to live your life in a certain manner based on your religion.

Life is short, live life the way you wish to live it.

Well doesn't that include religion, If I wished to live my life based on the bible wouldn't it be included in that category?

I don't like the attitude that homosexuality is a sin, something bad to be grouped with the likes of stealing and lying when it's not. The idea that if you don't believe in God, you will burn in hell forever does not sit well with me either. I don't believe it because I'm not a Christian but many parents will tell it to their children which makes me uncomfortable

I think christian parents tell their children because they believe it and they want the best for them, which to them is their child being saved. Of course at some point in your spiritual journey you have to make a decision on whether or not you personally wanna build a relationship with God.

I'll try to explain it in a way that doesn't seem rude, I'm not trying to be offensive with what I'm saying.

But imagine you yourself are living in a different place and a majority of the population believes in something you find untrue and ridiculous and they center their whole lives around it. Some of them even use said beliefs to attack others, and they have huge arguments with others who have beliefs just as ridiculous.

Obviously some atheist people go too far in what they are saying and many can have a superiority complex, but it really does wear on your brain after a while.

Don't worry you weren't offensive! I can see were your coming from, Colossians 4:5-6 is a great verse for response I think. People should dive into the word more often and think on the way they treat others.

"Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone,"

In history, a lot of wars are caused by differences in religious views. Not to mention witch hunts that happened killing innocents because certain people did not behave in the way the bible said.

Certain religions only sees itself as the true religion.

That aside, I think religions can also do a lot of good too. Like phrases "love your neighbor like how you would love yourself"

yes, everyone is a "sinner" but "god" also states many times in the bible that the people who follow him are absolved of their sins because they believe that jesus is the son of god. and everyone who doesn't is bad and apparently on the same level as murderers and actual evil people simply because they don't believe in something that has no factual explanation. all religions are based on faith and faith alone, which is why non-believers call it brainwashing.

That's true, even if you're not religious personal morality is very important.

 toxic and brainwashed..

Can you explain your thinking please?

It's misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia, I guess.

Ah, how so?

Thanks for being respectful.

I am not religious but there are many people that do good through their religion which I think highly of.

Yes I understand of course the intention is good, but regardless of that it can still have negative emotional outcomes for the child (and with the homophobia I mentioned before, the outcome can be even worse, even though the parents are well-intentioned). That is why I don't like it.

Well, it was stated over and over again in the bible that a women's period is what made her 'unpure' for starters,

Example,

“When a woman has her regular flow of blood, the impurity of her monthly period will last seven days, and anyone who touches her will be unclean till evening. … If a man lies with her and her monthly flow touches him, he will be unclean for seven days…†Leviticus 15:19-32.

We all know the homophobic verse by now since it has been restated loads, so, I don't think it's worth the mention,

As for transphobia, it's more of the fact that it is mostly conservative Christians denouncing and degrading transgenders

1) Constant preaching to non-believers

2) Using religion to justify why you don’t stand for certain things (abortion, lgbt)

“It’s not what the religion say†Just admit that YOU yourself is not comfortable with it jfc. Some people like to hide behind their religion like a shield saying “God doesn’t support this†etc.

3) Using their beliefs to interfere with politics

4) Using religion to explain away their shitty behavior

I don’t hate religion or anything but I despise the fact that religions (especially Christianity) constantly likes to interfere the lives of others who don’t even share the same beliefs as them.

I don't like the whole eternal damnation for not following the Lord's word. Especially since I'm friends with people who are gay/trans and come from different religious backgrounds. I know some people follow a looser interpretation of the Bible, but I can't put my faith into something if I have to pick and choose which parts I should abide by.

I'm saying this as someone who has gone through this phase: identity issues. And yes, it is largely a phase. Most non-religious people don't care about religion, that's the point of it, and a lot of people come to understand it at some point. The people you talk about are a different kind. I call the types you talk about "religious atheists", because they act as if they are a superior religion, not an irreligion. They often join social media pages about atheism, subscribe to youtubers about atheism, their life centers around atheism, because they have just begun crafting an identity for themselves. They start to associate religion with ignorance in order to make themselves feel smarter, and violence, to make themselves feel more rational and progressive etc. They are building an identity for themselves, and they get a lot of feedback for their echo chambers which makes them believe those things.
