Yes....But it's half and half because it also exists because of it. The problem is the negative aspect (aka a selection of crazy kpop fans that make the rest look bad). I always see people on twitter talk about how kpop stans are the worst, terrible, crazy, etc and saying it seems to be the big reason why they don't like kpop (using the whole 'oh, it's stupid because I can't understand them anyways) as a cover up. The awful people are usually the loudest and most noticeable andddd people like to lump everyone together because of the actions of one or two people so that can paint a bad image for kpop overall.

stan culture in general (for non-kpop) can be pretty freaking awful though. ahmagahplz.png

I don't think it does, but it's more dependant on the individual themselves. Stans are just fans who are more in depth on their faves, and there's nothing wrong with that. The issue, however, is when a stan becomes so adamant on trying to push their fave, that they resort to bashing other acts & downplaying other accomplishments made by others, just to make theirs look better.

Stanning is a huge part of K-Pop and the culture helps make it unique, but it depends on the person, not the entire group.

Define stan culture. Do you mean fandom arguments? Trying to ruin groups you don't like or see as competition? Ruining reputations? Personally attacking idols? Because yes that's toxic and it doesn't ruin kpop as a whole but it does ruin the excitement of some things and makes stanning stressful when it doesn't need to be. Do you mean buying albums? Streaming your biases? No that doesn't ruin anything.

Stan itself is bad because that means you're giving excessive attention and priority to something. It's bad and it hurts kpop to a certain degree (e.g. those scandals and the reason why your faves can't date people) but it doesn't totally ruin kpop because kpop is built of stanning or at least how people say it considering their definition of stan. I personally don't think that kpop is "mostly" built of stans. Most of them are followers, stans are different they're worse but we use the word so lightly now. So yeah, you can see people use the word stan pretty light now considering it's a pretty bad word. I don't know if it's even being used for it's actual meaning. Back to the topic, It ruins it once different stans collide with each other (e.g. fanwars). Also stanning doesn't also just exist in kpop. There's more scary stans of singers and blah blah out there that's really fierce and brutal.

Some of it is bad, but some of it is very good. K-Pop itself is a highly organized group effort to make a popular product on various levels just on the 1st party side so it makes sense that stan culture exists to support it.
