SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and Big Hit Entertainment will be coming together with SK Telecom to create a new B2B music content distribution and B2C music service platform!

The three entertainment labels met with SK Telecom on January 31 for the collaboration. The collaboration aims to improve the current music industry, to create a base for better creation of contents, as well as to provide a better music service to customers.

Starting from February 1, the three labels will be distributing their digital and physical music through SK Telecom's iriver. The goal is to start with these companies, and ultimately get more and more labels to join.

Yea this is an SKT product that JYP, SM and BIghit are joining not something created by them. Not something that should be used for fanwars and look at my fave company but more so just making music more acessible.

At the same time, Korea is already over saturated with music streaming sites....i have a feeling this will flop, if they had made it international would've made more sense.

Pray for the future music videos not to have that annoying add in, like SM's genie adds back in the day...

Yg just signed with Genie, I think?

YG just formed a partnership with Genie.

The new streaming service is with Nielsen.

There are already so many music streaming platforms - surprised that companies want to create even more.... wouldn't it be simpler to just have 2-3 big ones... tho I guess in the west spotify and apple have too much leveraging power.

melon already has ~60% of the digital market and genie is 2nd with ~20%.... that means all of the other digital platforms (already over 10, I think?) are fighting over remaining 20% share.

No. YG announced last week they are teaming up with Nielsen to create their own streaming service.

Its not necessarily a traditional music streaming site but it feeds into Spotify, Apple Music, etc to help tag and identify and expose Kpop to areas where its not as easily assessible. So they are distributors of the music digitally, its more so a music data/research service than go here to listen to YG songs.

Long term, great for YG and Naver because they can use and sell the data they have to be able to track and attract certain audiences and help with music creation and production that can be used in other areas. (I.e if in NY, Kpop with urban beats are popular, they can target and advertise songs there that fit what the people in the area like etc).

But same product/service at the end of the day.
