I was watching "the mindy projet" on netflix with dubbing in french

And the lead (the french voice) literally said the n word but in french.

In the original english audio mindy doesnt say it.

I wonder if the french woman doing the dubbing is black ...

Edit: I checked and shes white

We know what the "n word" means, we know it's racist and you should not say it irl but it's not a banned word (it's not a taboo) like it is in the US. Also I have to say we don't use this word a lot (even black people in France, to my knowledge, barely use the word).

I feel like it only shock people who understand english. Its weird

I think it's because the french word doesn't have the same impact. You have to take into consideration the history of the country. Don't get me wrong the french n-word is really bad and you should not say it.

Yeah people don't understand the negative connotation here (except for a few people) but nobody uses it because everyone tell them not to.

Sometimes the french equivalent to the n word is used to describe black people in books, textbooks...

Yes, I think so too.

Before joining OH I didn't know it was wrong tbh.

Same in my country that's not a common word but some people (young) use it i didn't know how wrong is to use that word until i came here (my country is not an english speaking country) AND that's why i think nobody should use that word because in my country people use it because they've heard black rappers using it so they asume it's a "cool" word

But why are black people mad when kidols say it then? If its a different culture?

because the black people you're talking about are americans and rightly so they have a certain feeling about the word. but that doesn't mean their rules apply to the rest of the world. it's called context. also i would like to note that SOME black people feel this way, others have expressed very different views. foreign blacks feel the same as white foreigners and the rest, they simply don't care.

on a side note was it er or a? strange the mindy project would even bring up such a word, it gives off a lot of family friendly vibes.

Its not the same tho. Mindy said "n word" and the french voice said the full word

oh I see...

Anyway in french there is not a concept as to censored a word in saying "n word" or "c word", it's seen as stupid and honestly probably no one would understand what you are trying to say. So either way you say the whole word or you don't say at all; in that sense, it's normal that the whole word is said in french such that the viewer can understand what they are trying to convey smile.png

ohhhhh okay that makes more sense. because the french are not american (duh) they probably do not know "the n word" and just know the full slang with no censor because it's universally used, in addition that the word isn't seen as serious outside of the US. i was looking at an american talk about it with an italian (she was black at that) and the woman actually asked "what's 'the n word'? what 'n word'?" in addition i have even seen entire german crowds sing along to songs containing the word with the performers and nothing happened. it's as normal as other words over there (i mean outside of the US).
