莲å¶ç”°ç”° 并蒂æˆåŒ

远行的人 早些回家

如相问 缘何生白å‘

欲寻断肠处 有未了牵挂

rú xiÄng wèn / yuán hé shÄ“ng bái fà

yù xún duàn cháng chù / yÇ’u wèi liÇŽo qiÄn guà

The lotus leaves link together [into a large green patch]. Twin flowers blossom on one shared stalk[1].

Oh person who has journeyed afar, come home a little earlier.

If [someone] asks: why do [you] grow white hairs?

[it is because I] wish to seek the place of [my] heartbreak; there are worries [of mine] that have yet to be resolved.

The dimly discernible roaming soul [reaches] the quicksand of the Yellow Springs[2].

Oh wanderer, don't forget to return home.

Old dreams light candle flames. New smoke becomes flying flowers.

The instant when the smoke is put out, [i can] vaguely [see what seems to] be you.

è°èƒ½å…¥æˆ‘梦 共红尘婆娑

忆那年 心事难说

Who can enter my dreams and share [with me] the whirling red dust[3]?

Remembering that year, [how] matters of the heart were difficult to voice.

You will, upon waking from the dream, laugh at me for being so foolishly infatuated.

If heaven has a heart, let the months and years be squandered with nothing to show for their passing.

A dream is entrusted to the passing time. The obsessiveness endures and is not be broken.

[i am] unable to fully grasp and see through the cycles of reincarnation and preordained fate.

Which corner of the great trichiliocosm[4] will you be in?

Raise your eyes like me and look at the brilliant peach blossoms in full flourishment.

我åªå½±å½’去 æ¨èŠ±ä¼¼é›ªè½

阖眼是你的轮廓

月色中 你浅笑回眸 簪桃花一朵

执我之手 百年已走过

yuè sè zhÅng / nÇ qiÇŽn xiào huí móu / zÄn táo huÄ yÄ« duÇ’

zhí wÇ’ zhÄ« shÇ’u / bÇŽi nián yÇ zÇ’u guò

Alone, I return. The willow catkins are like snow falling.

Closing [my] eyes, [what I see] is your outline.

In the moonlight, you lightly smile and turn to look back, a single peach blossom tucked in [your] hair as a hairpin.

Grasp my hand. A hundred years have already passed.

执我之手 百年已走过

zhí wÇ’ zhÄ« shÇ’u / bÇŽi nián yÇ zÇ’u guò

Grasp my hand. A hundred years have already passed.

T/N:

[1] 并蒂 (lit. merged pedicel), when describing twin lotus flowers, is used as a metaphor for a devoted loving couple.

[2] 黄泉 (lit. yellow spring) is what the underworld is called in Chinese mythology.

[3] 红尘 (lit. red dust) is a metaphor for the ordinary world of mankind. When horses and carriages passed over the unpaved earthen roads in the olden days, dust would rise. These 'roads' represented the figurative roads to fame and fortune that the common man pursues.

[4] 三åƒä¸–界 (lit. three thousand worlds) is short for 三åƒå¤§åƒä¸–界, which is the concept of the "great trichiliocosm" in the sahasra (Sanskrit for "thousand") cosmology in Buddhism that describes the horizontal arrangement of realms within the infinite universe. You can take it to mean the whole universe in this case.
