Which male idols do you think are gay?

Recommended Posts

The argument against involving teenagers in lgbt discussions is one step away from saying we shouldn't teach kids about lgbt topics in their sex ed or have gay characters in children's media. Literally no one here was sexualising minors in any way but a couple of straighties yelling "PEDOS!" is enough for the entire debate to get shut down and censored, no matter how informed and eloquent the lgbt counter argument was :/ but anyway

Do some of the users have personal experiences and information about the entertainment industry and the amount of LGBT in it?

I've been in theatre for the past decade and around 60% of the male dancers I work with are out as gay or bi, as well as about 10% of the male actors. Granted, this is in LA, a place that attracts a lot of lgbt people since it's generally liberal and progressive. I started my career in London but I was a teenager then, as were most of the colleagues I hung out with, so the situation was different. I only knew a couple of openly gay performers back then. An interesting note is that, of the out male actors I work with nowadays, most of them are singers as well. The out male actors who don't also sing or dance are definitely a minority.

This is purely my personal experience though. I wish I could give a better overview of the industry at large but I'm not really informed enough

Gaydar is complicated and subjective. It's more likely to ping when a man is effeminate or flamboyant rather than masculine, and there is some truth to that in many cases, but we know stereotypes aren't always accurate. I think it's good to raise the question of why masculine idols (with tons of receipts stronger than seeing a gay film or wearing rainbows) are so frequently immediately dismissed as straight by the masses.

Bisexuality is a different thing to read in people than homosexuality also. It has its own feel, often much more subtle and straight-seeming, especially if they have a preference for the opposite sex, and I think a lot of people here are analysing whether a male idol is gay or bi by the measure of how specifically gay his vibes are, even though that is a separate sexuality.

Regarding BTS, it's always the same few members who are the official hets in people's conclusions, and there is a theme there. So many only speculate about Yoongi because of the notoriety of that interview and his tongue lyrics; otherwise I suspect he'd be another coincidentally masculine member people just happen to not get "gay vibes" from :imstupid:

i agree with your post !! although i gotta say yoongi pings the living SHIT out of me. i never really got straight vibes from him tbh

Dunno yoongi really pings to me with or without the lyrics and such

O hell yes Yoongi pings to me too, but to clarify I was talking about the people who think it's too unlikely for masculinity and same sex attraction to coexist. I imagine that, purely because he is masculine, many people who are operating under stereotypes about gay/bi men would also write him off as straight if it weren't for certain famous quotes of his; and that should showcase how inaccurate judging sexuality from gender expression can be

"Statistically speaking" doesn't mean anything at the end of the day. We should be examining each case for what it is, not dismissing them on a generalisation. The way some of y'all talk is as though you regard the notion of there being more than one gay guy in a group of men as beyond impossible, and it's just weird to me. I feel like that way of thinking is slightly dated in its idea of how many lgbt people actually exist (since it's been shown to increase among younger generations as people become more accepting), and its implication of sexuality being rigid instead of fluid, a perspective that will be rather unfair to bisexual people who don't experience attraction to different genders in equal ratios.

Him masturbating to a book that has gay/bi sex (IIRC it was a menage between to men and a woman (?))

He didn't mention any scene in particular, just that he got "second hand satisfaction" from the book.

Some excerpts (including the m/m bj) under spoiler but just a heads up, it's pretty graphic and crude. Anyone uncomfortable with this, maybe don't check it out

Concerning Ernie and Bert :

I read in some articles claiming they were gay but then in this one the author (Mark Saltzma) for "The sesamstreet" just stated that his relationship with his partner and filmeditor(Arnold Glassman) were the foundation of Ernie and Bert.

What he meant by this was that he and his partner are opposing characters just like E&B. Futhermore he doesnt want so put any label on puppets from a children's show so we dont for sure whether they are queer or not although they have been shown and mentioned in topics concerning equality or the right for gay marriage.

https://www.spiegel.de/kultur/tv/ernie-und-bert-sind-die-sesamstrasse-figuren-nun-schwul-oder-nicht-a-1228883.html

It doesn't really matter whether the characters are intended to be gay or not. They have that context now regardless. I'm not saying owning Bert and Ernie merch is necessarily a receipt for someone's sexuality since they're still iconic outside of any relation to homosexuality; but the mere news that they were based on a gay couple has forever attached that new slant to them in pop culture Edited by slightly

So BTS' new album just came out and the song "Dionysus" has some interesting lyrics:

In Namjoon's verse, he says "In one hand, a liquor glass / In my other hand, a thyrsus". In the translator notes: "A thyrsus is a staff held by Dionysus which represents prosperity, fertility, hedonism, pleasure. It is suggested that the staff itself represents a penis." From the official Wikipedia page for a thyrsus: "The thyrsus, associated with Dionysus (or Bacchus) and his followers, the Satyrs and Maenads, is a symbol of prosperity, fertility, hedonism, and pleasure/enjoyment in general. It has been suggested that this was specifically a fertility phallus, with the fennel representing the shaft of the penis and the pine cone representing the "seed" issuing forth. The thyrsus was tossed in the Bacchic dance:

Pentheus: The thyrsus— in my right hand shall I hold it?

Or thus am I more like a Bacchanal?

Dionysus: In thy right hand, and with thy right foot raise it"

So...yeah, basically Namjoon is saying he's holding a penis in his hand :derp: I know it may be a bit of reach, but it would be such a Namjoon thing to write a line using obscure gay Greek mythological theories lmao

I also think "I'll show you, I'm pushing something new / A mic made of ivy and rough wood / There's no sound that comes out / In one breath" is pretty interesting too lol

Serving Jonghyun "what's in my hand is not a glass" teas

I don't know how serious I'm being but if we do interpret the thyrsus as a penis metaphor, we get the rap line taking turns to chant "DICK GRIPPIN'!" amazing

On an unrelated note, this whole album is so sweet and pink I wanna eat it like a cake

I agree. Though I keep a very open mind on what members actually know and do and what we're told. But that goes for anything and anyone in my book. The only full picture you can get is of yourself, in truth.

As to this thing, lol, can you actually imagine whichever female artist this is making a fuss in front of (no doubt) RM after presumably RM has divulged to her, a complete stranger, that x-y-z members of his group are gay? I mean the scenarios that run through the head are endless but I'd honestly imagine people are going to be polite with them and not launch into intrusive personal direct questioning. What situation would even lead to such an exchange outside of a blind item writer's imagination? It seems like a stretch to me too. It's also unclear what the 'it' is that she's banging on about. It's like part of the blind is missing.

The only marginally interesting aspect for me is that it continues the website's supposition that there are gays in the ranks, which goes back to a time when BTS was barely a buzzword in the US. But yeah, everything that comes off of Ent's site should be doused in shade because anybody can send what they want in, nobody's going to go and verify it. We don't know who's writing these things. I was just curious as to what people thought about it.

For a hot second I wondered if it could be referring to Madonna, since she used to surround herself with gay dancers and artists and culture and might have an especially astute gaydar, possibly enough to pick up on something with BTS herself without being told. But I don't think any human on earth would call Madonna "former A- list" so nvm lol Edited by slightly

I don't know anything more about the threesome rumour, I just saw it alluded to by a few people on allkpop. It seemed a lil mysterious bc it was lowkey and no one was challenging it or freaking out, but if it really did come from a prediction account then yeah those are always total bull.

Regarding Namjoon, I like analysing him through the bisexual lense every so often but I can't shake the feeling that his receipts are just those of a really good ally with strong empathy skills. I think there will sometimes be cases of queer idols being too uncomfortable or at risk with publicly and explicitly associating themselves with queerness, so supportive straight members of the group take on that role for them; to help the cause and maybe increase acceptance in their fandom. So I don't think it's the length of receipt lists that matter

41 minutes ago, skelten said:

I’m sorry but you can’t just try to call a whole sexuality “transphobic” and then try to redefine it. Bisexuality is sexual attraction to both sexes. I don’t see the problem. I’m bisexual and you can’t redefine my sexuality, sorry. It’s in the name.

Bisexuality is defined as attraction to more than one gender.

"Both sexes" implies that only two sexes exist (hello intersex people), and that gender can't exist separately from biological sex (hello trans/nb people).

I'm not trying to tell you how bisexuality works for you if you're only attracted to two genders. But it's about acknowledging that bisexuality has a vast definition that can differ from one bisexual to the next.

Spoiler

Just gonna clear up a couple points in case:

I am intersex myself. Our existence, many argue, disproves gender as binary. I phrased it badly but this is what I meant.

And I'm not arguing that gay people are terrible if they can't feel attraction to trans people? Not sure if I'm even reading that rebuttal right, but if anyone got the idea that that's what I was implying, let me refute it. By framing sexual orientation to be about gender, my intention is to make space for trans and nb people to not be defined by their genitals, but not to demonise gay people who still only feel attraction to the same biological sex.

Apologies to skelton though, I think I misunderstood the angle you were coming from

Anyway, I'm out of this discourse now 🤐

Is it possible that the 'obvious' idols don't get in dating scandals simply because they're more confident in their sexualities and refuse to play along with such propositions?
