Aisling 19,436
Bobby's answer in that interview got me shook. He's an interesting guy, for sure. And I agree, you never really know what's going on in someone's head. Plenty of gay/bi people have admitted to making homophobic comments in the past to cover themselves. Not that that makes it okay, but it definitely happens. Anyway, here's a cute thread of Tony/Jaeduck. Also, just something I noticed, is the guy who was "Tony's first man" the same guy who asked Donghan what his ideal type was? It was from a video posted recently. IIRC, Donghan answered, "Hyung" (meaning the guy), then said sorry, and the guy said, "No, I really like it. I love it." Aisling 19,436
Hey everyone! I haven't posted here in a while (I miss you guys). Aisling 19,436
I don't know korean well but I found this comment below the video "The thing about English is that gender pronouns are so ingrained in our language that when people talk about their own romantic life without using them, usually they’re doing it on purpose to indicate that they’re bi, pan, etc. or that there’s some sort of ambiguity in their sexuality. If Jimin were speaking in English and... - used ‘she,’ people would assume he’s straight - used ‘he,’ people would assume he’s gay - didn’t use any gender pronouns, people would assume that he’s purposely trying to be inclusive, or make his sexuality ambiguous or something along those lines. The way, Korean works, it’s quite normal to just speak without using gender pronouns (or pronouns at all for that matter) so Jimin was probably just speaking the way Koreans normally would, and was probably not trying to get people to question his sexuality or anything like that. I like this structure because it allows you to talk about your love life without inviting any judgement calls about your sexuality (including judgement calls that you’re trying to be inclusive or ambiguous) even if you’re just unashamedly straight or unashamedly gay. Even outside of romance, it allows you to talk about people in a gender neutral way, without having people think you’re making some sort of point. It’s too bad any translation of Jimin’s answer to English would by nature make gender/sexuality an issue." I saw that comment too, but my goodness the translator could've just used "we." Not that it would be the first time a translator took it upon themself to confirm a celebrity's heterosexuality. 7
Aisling 19,436
If the original Twitter statement is accurate, then it's kinda comical to me that the translator apparently felt the need to genderfy one person's 'neutral' response (why correct it if it's the Korean way?) but allowed the other answers to remain gendered, rather than neutralise them all so they flowed. Truthfully, it's no biggie because I'd expect this from boyband protocol 101. The brief will always be to make most things (or a good chunk of them) female centric, and that's fair enough, the fandom is largely female. But the whole thing just makes me smile ruefully when people jump in and try to grab the rainbow flags before they've even been unwrapped. For real. It's just wild to me that if a translator takes a gender neutral answer and makes it straight, and you point this out, you're apparently the one """trying to make him seem gay""" and """forcing a sexuality on him""" . These poor folks really don't know what projection means. 13
Aisling 19,436
I've been going through my old saved likes on Tumblr and found this lol: (x) Also, about Jungkook, I keep thinking of J-Hope's comments in that recent awards speech about going new places and seeing that people love in different ways, etc. I kind of wonder if traveling and meeting more people who are *openly* LGBT has had an impact on them. On a related note, the other day I saw a comment under one of Kim Cheolsoo's videos. I don't think they said what country they were from, but they were talking about the video where he and Jangho announced they were dating and (the commentor) said something like, "I never expected to see a real person come out and even introduce the person they're dating." Like....wow. Idk sometimes I just wonder if maybe we take for granted all the openly LGBT people in certain countries and forget that's not the norm yet in other places. Aisling 19,436
^I know adults in Korea kiss babies on the lips, but since they're almost the same age, that doesn't really apply. It's interesting they let that air. Huh.

Aisling 19,436
I'm not saying anyone has to like Holland's music and I'm not pretending he's any kind of Beyonce vocal, but can we also remember that idols in a company have months if not years before debuting to train with vocal and dance teachers, as well as being put on diets/training regimens and pressured/coerced into plastic surgery to change how they look. And musically, the songs are entirely written for them, especially when they're just debuting. Holland hasn't had any of those resources. As far as I know, he hasn't had any formal training, and with his music, he recently said he does everything but produce himself: "I don't produce songs. Except that, I decide everything, such as genre, lyrics, concept, music video, hair, make-up, costume, cover design and marketing. Of course, I always communicate with the song producer." Again, you don't have to be a fan of his songs or voice or face or whatever. But personally I think it's amazing what he's managed to do so far with zero help from a company. 31
Aisling 19,436
That's such an utopic statement, it made me laugh. Some of yall are truly ready to kiss the ground your faves walk on and declare them saviours of the universe. Get a reality check man.I doubt that any company in SK, no matter how socially aware they might be, would sign an openly gay artist while homosexuality is still such a huge taboo. I think all companies care more about gain than anythinh else, and the risk of losing it all with such a move is too much imo. I totally get what you mean, but MRSHLL is signed, and he said everyone at his company was really supportive. Or did you mean just idol companies?

Aisling 19,436
Ok really, I’ve read that so many NCT members are gay - which ones are NOT lol I’ll just list the ones that ping and ones that don’t - didn’t include the dreamies because I don’t really watch their content: Ping: TEN Jungwoo Kind of, so could be bi/pan: Taeyong Lucas Haechan Do not ping: Yuta Doyoung Mark Taeil Johnny Jaehyun Just personally, I would put Taeyong in the gay category. I've never seen anything that made me think Lucas likes guys, but I could be wrong. Doyoung does ping me, but I can't think of many receipts for him except him kind of flirting with Jungwoo. Taeil has had (unfortunately for everyone) a big crush on Winwin, and Doyoung once called Jaehyun out that, "He keeps flirting with my brother," so I don't think either of them are straight. All just speculation though, who knows. 9
Aisling 19,436
Oh reading your post made me realise I left Win Win out oops. He doesn’t really ping for me though? Everyone loves him but I’ve never seen any content that made me go ‘oh’. And these are all speculations so eh - with Lucas just watching interactions made me ping but he had a gf in the past so I left him up to interpretation. Could also be that he relies on the others a lot because he’s not really fluent in korean. Yeah Winwin doesn't ping me either, RIP the rest of NCT lol.

Aisling 19,436
This was an interesting video, especially since it was made by someone Korean. It's mostly about how BTS and other kpop idols are changing gender norms, but you don't usually hear the Korean perspective on that. Also, while there are definitely people in the comments yelling, "Stop calling my oppas gay!!!111" there are actually quite a few people challenging that or making separate comments about how we don't know their sexualities and it wouldn't matter.
Aisling 19,436
^Agreed. I would 100% applaud any celebrity or public figure who decides to come out, especially in a country where the LGBT community is less visible, but I also understand why they haven't. First, since we're talking about idols, no idol (as far as I know) is anywhere close to being a billionaire. I saw an article recently saying that Jaejoong is the richest idol with a net worth of $100 million (yes, still a lot of money, but nowhere close to a billion). Most idols are paid much less than people think, especially in Asia where companies take a larger share. Being from the US myself, it may feel like coming out won't actually hurt their career, but Hyuna and E'Dawn were kicked out of their company for admitting to a hetero relationship. Sungmin hasn't promoted with SJ for ages because of the backlash to him getting married. If you were an LGBT idol, you would assume the same would happen to you, if not worse. I'm sure idols and other celebrities signed to companies will start coming out eventually. Attempting to guilt people into coming out (or just outing them) doesn't help closeted people. What would help is making ourselves more visible so that they know there's a whole community of people who will love and support them whenever they're ready. Aisling 19,436
Tae and Jimin seem like gay bffs to me. There have actually been a lot of sus moments between them, but to me, they mainly seem like non-serious antics between gay/bi friends. A few examples: Tae: "I think Jimin likes men." Jimin: "I don't like you." - Tae: *gets hit in the leg/groin during paintball* Jimin: *persistent* "Show me. You need treatment." - Jimin: "It's not Tae's back you should be anticipating." (looks down at Tae's dick - lol I still can't believe he did this) Edited December 29, 2018 by Aisling
