You can apply that to Hollywood, to some extent, but I wouldn't say the same thing goes for Korean ent. I can think of a grand total of four LGBT celebrities in Korea and two of them committed suicide because of the hardships they endured in their professional life. 

 

I think it makes a big difference whether you're out or not. Being out means being under everyone's scrutiny and judgment, and it's much easier to be prevented from working etc -sadly-. That's what happened to HSC. 

 

But there have been quite a lot of insiders saying that the amount of korean LGBT celebrities is high and that -most often- they're just open secrets for people inside the industry.

I wouldn't say they live it "freely", but none -as for now- would take the responsibility of outing someone, since it'd be a total disaster for their career and they would face the rage of the relative entertainment company. Hence they can date quite easily - there are places that are known to be quite safe for same sex idol couples dating, including HSC's restaurants- without the risk of being exposed. 

 

This is especially true if the idol is established, like Heechul, Jo Kwon, Jaejoong etc. That's why I don't think any of them would come out anytime soon, why would they? They're living it quite freely while still keeping their career. I mean, Heechul and Gunhee uploaded videos together in bed for years, yet none said one thing. Heechul even declared that he simply "made a deal with reporters" before ending his military service.

Ofc there would be rumors, there are tons, but that doesn't prevent them from working, which instead would totally happen in any other

type of industry/job.

 

Paradoxically, same sex dating is even more easy than with the opposite sex, because no article will ever come out for bros who are hanging out together, but rumors will surely spread if fangirls spot a girl and a boy hanging around. 

 

Plus, it's the only field where not having a partner of the opposite sex and having no desire to marry for years isn't considered strange, or better, it's well-seen (e.g. Sungmin.)  

 

It's quite obvious it may be a preferred career choice for many LGBT people,imo.

 

Ofc, that doesn't apply to everybody, there are plenty of ways straight couples date behind the scenes as well -much more than we'd guess, probably- but I do think it's reasonable to say that the number of LGBT people in the industry is much higher one would think.

You raise a lot of good points! We'll never know how many are hiding in plain sight, as it were. I agree it's definitely easy for same sex couples to 'date' openly, in that the general public in Korea aren't as keen to jump onto the gay rumours like other countries. In a way, the countries ignorance works for them, if you wanna look on the bright side.

 

For men, as well, stars can remain bachelors well into their 30s and 40s and people don't really speculate. Out of Sechs Kies, only one (two if you include Ko Ji Yong) of them has been married and they're all in their late 30s and it's not treated as unusual. Same could be said for Shinhwa as well. 

 

It's really easy to fly under the radar, though I have a feeling if there was irrefutable proof with regards to a gay idol in a trendy group... someone would leak it. We've been lucky so far.

But things leak, indeed. There are tons of rumors on Jo Kwon, Heechul and many others, it has even been implied in magazines (I mean, the Mithrachul scandal had to be denied and laughed off), but not to the point of having an official scandal.

Last year's blind item about the couple made me wonder if things could change, tho.

Mmm, that they do! I almost wonder if the more casual acceptance (and interest) in same sex couples will lead to a scandal in the future. I always think back to the Jo Kown/Soohyun incident... if that happened now, would it be as easily ignored?

 

Yeah, but I think it will still take a few years. When a scandal like that will come out it'll probably be a chain reaction though, many more couples would be exposed and people would start questioning, so I wonder who'll actually take responsibility for that.

I think a lot of people think based on their culture. Marriage/dating plays a big role in conservative cultures you know. When they say you need to be married within a certain age, they mean it. 

 

In my country, if you are a man/woman in your 30s and you're unmarried, the social exclusion starts. In Korea, I think they are safe for a few more years, but from what I read, there is not much of a difference. Only big political leaders and (obviously) celebrities are allowed to be unmarried, or marry late, without much social stigma. 

 

Korea is EXACTLY the same. That's what I meant by rigid masculine rules too. They have the exact same culture in terms of marriage, gender rules, etc, and our countries probably won't change for another 30-40 years. 

 

Right now, being a celebrity is the best cover for an LGBT person who does not want to get forced into a life they don't want. That, or run away to the west to get away from their parents' stranglehold (like many guys in my country are doing). 

 

Being a celebrity is THE best cover, and from what I see, being a Kpop artist looks like an even better cover. I've never seen a culture like that, where you can cross-dress, wear makeup, have feminine mannerisms, and no one would question you about it (much). 

 

I'm pretty sure doing things like that or being like that wouldn't go over well in an office setting. If you think the west is too rigid about masculine rules, you need to take a look at Asia. We are worse.

 

 

THIS is so important. Because, honestly, all these people saying "it's normal for a Korean man to act like that, they have different standards, being feminine is more accepted".....like, honestly, not even one bit.

(And not to mention the recent rumors of him that he has a boyfriend. I don't know if the rumors reached OH! but they circulated in the k-fandom. I don't know much more though.....)

Despite the rumor I don't think he is only limited to male partners.

Baekhyun is also a difficult thing to judge, since he is sometimes very steriotypical. But nonetheless I still think he is pretty interested in women, even though he really seems to like tall boys. Maybe not for a romantic reason but he seems like the time who would love to fool around with guys if the situation is given. Also his crush on Chanyeol is kinda obvious haha... Not sure if it is romantic but he clings to him a lot!

Chanyeol:

 

He seems like your typical straight ally. His interest for women is pretty clear but on the other hand he seems to like smaller guys a lot. In the end I think he would be kind of open to try it out with guys, but I'm not too sure.

Despite his his obvious interest in woman, he can get a bit flirtatious with men as well. He has shown a lot of skin ship with men and somehow I think that he wouldn't be totally off to flirt with a guy.

His very sophisticated viewpoint on social issues tell that he is a pretty open guy in general and that gender might not matter too much too him. I'm sure he supports the LGBTQ+ community even if I haven't seen him publicly speaking out for them.

His reactions to fanboys is really really adorable though.

I say this as a (pretty hardcore) HunHan-Shipper, but I really don't find anything that would make me thing he is non-straight. His relationship with Sehun was really suspicious. It wouldn't really surprise me if they dated sometime pre debut and also in 2014. There have been a lot of rumors regarding that, surprisingly from korean and chinese fans likewise.

Hello, can I please join for a second? 

I kinda agree with all of you about Baekhyun, but I'm interested what do you think about his dreams of his future family? I can't find this interview right now, but some time ago he gave an inteview where he talk about his dream family, and this is the most basic heteronormative family portrait that can be tbh    I'm afraid to lie to y'all, but he was talking about pretty housewife and him being the breadwinner and such (correct me if I'm wrong). And tbh, he always kinda tries to imply that he wants girlfriend, "normal" family and sometime he seems uncomfortable with gay stuff (usually when he is not who initiated it).

So my question: is he

a) latent gay/bi and don't want to/afraid to accept this and that's why he feels uncomfortable sometimes and says "straight" things

b) gay/bi but trying to hide it pulling hetero shit, and he feel uncomfortable in some situations just because he is shy or flustered? (Isn't it logical for gar person to feel uncomfortable when other man makes gay "jokes" or violate personal space? I would act the same with men giving me attention, flirting with me or joking about it, ect.)

c) straight af and all these gay stuff is because he is super comfortable with his sexuality and acts like this for fans' fun?  (sounds doubtful)

I really want to know what people think about possibility who's gay in NCT. Honestly only Hansol ping me. As for couples in NCT, I'm quite confused with Jaehyun & Taeyong (Jaeyong couple). Actually both of them didn't give me any gay vibe at all. Although Taeyong is a clingy & touchy person to his members, especially Jaehyun.

But in their recent trip to Thailand, I'm surprised that I found something "odd" about them. When they depart to Thailand, I knew something happened between them, they seems having fight or argument which made them in heavy tension. 

On the 2nd day in Bangkok, they attended a press conf and they sat side by side. (There's a video for the whole event).When the event start they were still in tension, but during the event I'm quite shocked with what I see. They tensed when their shoulder brushed, they avoided each other's eyess but they kept stealing glances, looked away when the other caught, hold smile when the other make funny comments. It's not what ordinary men do when they fight. It's like a couple who fight !  

But what made more surprising is what happen next when a fancam of them in the lift fully packed by people. Jaehyun & Taeyong stood at the back of the lift. Taeyong laid his head on Jaehyun's shoulder. And he lifted his head when he aware lot of camera shoot them. I think they made up after the press conf event.

2) I heard of the supposed fight and I agree there was actually some tension between them at the press conference, even tho I wouldn't immediately address it as couple-like.
