can someone recommend good bl dramas

oh can i ever

The best currently airing are Gaya Sa Pelikula (Like in the Movies), Cherry Magic! and I Told Sunset about You. All three have become instant classics. I also like My Gear and Your Gown but that has more mixed reviews.

My favourites of all time are - HiStory: Crossing the Line, Hello Stranger, SOTUS, Where Your Eyes Linger,  TharnType, HiStory: Trapped, Dark Blue Kiss (watch the PeteKao cuts from Kiss Me Again on youtube first!), Addicted Heroin, 2gether, My Engineer, Why R U, 2 Moons 2 and so many more lmao
If you wanna lose yourself in BL dramas really recommend the site world-of-bl.com - it's my life tbh and has all of the shows categorised with links and updates

What about movies? Not necessary bl, but ones that have gay characters and plots. I watched Method and it was really good and one movie that was even better and very realistic , Happy Together(1997). One of the main actors from the last one, Leslie Cheung, came out a long time ago as bisexual and has been living with his boyfriend for like 20 years until his death.

I tried watching BL but as a queer guy i get so triggered when they play the i am straight but i am only in love with you card by different reasons and how the plot is usually so boring. The only BL that i kinda liked was 3 will be free. I even tried addicted and it wasn't for me. I watched until ep 8 and both of them seem so straight. Like they declare how much they like girls and their ideal types and one of them doesn't even seem to be attracted to the other one at all. They just inserted some gay fan service scenes randomly. So, like in a conclusion it annoys me how much most of them contain gay plots but at the same time seem so heteronormative and sometimes problematic(kinda rapey cough cough). LMAO sorry for the rant.

I understand, and i completely agree with you - there are a lot of elements in BL that are highly problematic and I have a lot of issues with them myself, The non-con elements of series and series where the whole relationship between the boys is seen through straight women's eyes makes me highly uncomfortable and I tend to block these moments out or skip by them. I only stick with these kinds of shows if the characters themselves are something special and those moments of doubt, growth, acceptance etc. are worth it for me. My Engineer was completely like this for me, i hated all of the weird fujoshi girl characters they had, but Ram & King's relationship and dynamic was incredibly beautiful and rare so I stuck through it.

This year though there has been a shift, while there are still the typical BL shows made for teen girls coming out of Thailand, there are now many shows that are written/directed by LGBT people and focus on these relationships in more realistic ways and are, in my opinion, truly art and the lines between LGBTQ+ media and BL are being blurred. Have you tried watching I Told Sunset About You and Like in the Movies? - both of them are entirely in this category and I think you would find them very different from the standard BL's you are describing. Others that you might like include Long Time No See and HiStory 3: Trapped.

My biggest problem with LGBTQ+ movies (like the ones you mentioned and is typical of LGBTQ films from Asia) is that they focus around tragedy. So many of the characters die, are separated, are forced into prostitution or have other equally horrible things occur to them - of course this happens to everyone in life and there SHOULD be tragic stories told but it is completely disproportionate to the amount of films with happy, healthy LGBTQ+ stories. This is not a good thing either and there are many layers of why this is equally as problematic.

As for movies that I do recommend - HisNo Regret (still quite a heavy dose of tragedy in this one), Hidamari ga Kikoeru, No Touching At All  and Water Boyy: The Movie

The Asia BL wave is fully hitting Korea now and surprisingly many idols are taking up the lead roles

so far most of them have been from lesser known groups or contestants in survival shows -but with this pace of productions being announced,  i wonder if we'll get a more known idol taking a BL role soon?

WISH YOU : Your Melody In My Heart started airing today. The drama stars Insoo of MYNAME and Lee Sang of IMFACT as the romantic leads.

You can watch it on Viki or WeTV (depending on where you live!)

Please try to support this drama by watching if you can! We want to see more lgbtq+ representation in media and make it the norm that these roles exist in Korea and that there are no prejudices against idols for portraying them.

speaking of which, are there any idols that you would love to see in a similar role? I want to see Moonbin (Astro) in a proper BL! I think he'd do so well

Do you guys think it's a possibility that Sehun and Kwang Soo are in a relationship or involved romantically? Just curious.

Kwang Soo has been with his girlfriend Lee Sun Bin for almost 3 years now - they often appear together and talk about each other in interviews etc. So I highly doubt it. I don't feel like Kwang Soo is Sehun's type anyway lmaooo

Two more Korean BL series have been announced - To My Star and You Make Me Dance

To My Star is set to release this month and has cast & synopsis released (A lot of big actors are in this one, Jin Kwon from New Kidd also has a support role) while the details of You Make Me Dance are still unknown.

With a title like that, could this be the first Idol based story??
