Which male idols do you think are gay?

Recommended Posts

Do you think if they stopped the whole gay witch hunt more idols will come out?

i do not see this making a big dent as the issues are not directly related and idols themselves are not as big a deal in Korea as international fans think. however, if it was several idols and they decided to actively turn the conversation to LGBT people in the military, then people might turn their attention to it.

but idols have rarely been outspoken about social issues.

yeah that makes sense. Thanks for replying! ✨ I just hope Korea improves even more for lgbt+. I just want the people living there to love freely.

Honestly, if a whole bunch of idols got their heads together and came out en masse you'd think it'd draw enough attention for SK to really start looking into how it treats its LGBT folk. After all, idols are the ones bringing mega money and tourism in atm. It's because of K-pop that the world is looking in. On the back of that you might get sportspeople and others speaking out?

But by the same token it's expecting people to be poster children for the cause and it really is a sensitive and personal decision, which everyone must weigh up for themselves. Though if it were to make an impact, that strength in numbers might help. These are all might-be though and most likely that won't happen.

I can see, more unexpectedly, the SK courts perhaps relaxing their stance on gay witchhunts first, maybe out of nowhere, just from the pov that there's been international outcry. SK will do its own thing but it also really REALLY wants money and tourism.

Nobody wants a bad human rights record as a thorn in the side of revenue generation. Countries like China are big enough not to care but maybe smaller ones might.

This is indeed a sensitive topic. But change in a cultural norm and prejudice requires general public attention. And frankly, idol are not even up there on the upmost top chain of entertainment industry for Korean general public. Actors and singers actually have better image and respect than an idol of the same rank.

While you have a point about revenue, remember that sadly, majority fans do not support idol for who they are. They support the ideal image of an idol. Yes, they do ship and have the fantasy about boy love among members, but this is no way near accepting an idol being gay. And for most parts, the idea of "is he or is he not" is more tempting than a definite confirmation.

If anything, if some of them do come out, it is more likely that the mega revenue will shift from them to another group.

I do believe things will slowly improve though, but I personally doubt that it will come from idol coming out. And considering the harsh environment they are in, I rather them being safe in the closet, until the country is kind enough to accept them. Or maybe, there could be more Tony Ahn and Jaeduck in the years to come - nothing explicitly confirmed but everyone knows (and it does not look like they attract a lot of hate either).

was Hong Suk Chun exempted from Military service?

What about Jo Kwon and Sung Jong?

hong suk chun was not out when he entered the service (in fact, he apparently had a girlfriend at the time).

as for the other two, no. neither one of these boys is out, so they will not be exempted. fyi being exempted for being gay is highly dishonorable and most gay koreans just try to make it through quietly.

Oh I just found out Jo Kwon already enlisted.

I read that during Vietnam war a lot of people avoided draft by coming out. I guess for celebs it won't be possible

where though?

in Korea, doing your time in the military is seen as a national service and important rite of passage into adulthood for men. Korea is also very pro-military without a strong pro-peace counter-culture like in the US.

I am not saying it is the same in Korea lmao. I just mentioned it as something that could be done if someone was pro-peace and didn't want to serve in such a conservative institution but for a celeb I would imagine it is hard.

Personally I liked that Jaejoong got the peace tattoo after having to enlist. smile.png

With me personally, I always thought Taehyun was bi. I don't think he is the kind of person who would "bother" with fake dating in the public eye, I just think he didn't care to hide it. Idk, I don't see why his relationship would not be real.

I'm not sure how it is in Korea, but in the US and UK, it's often the company that organizes PR relationships. Actors and musicians have talked about how their companies pressured them into it, or at least tried to. I imagine in Korea, since companies feel comfortable outright banning people from dating at all, they probably wouldn't have a problem coercing them into fake dating when it's convenient.

Taehyun is the CEO of his own company so this really wouldn't be the case

Isnt he filming a drama or TV show right now? I think its obviously just promotion for that because I think they're co stars or something. I think it's very likely he didnt have much of a choice Edited by ccyn

I'm not really following the details of his situation specifically, but isn't he appearing on a show with the girl he's supposedly dating? If so, the company producing the show can make requests of the participants.

Either way, I was just responding to the idea of certain artists "not being the type" to do PR relationships. In the entertainment industry, it isn't always the artist's call.

Yeah Leeteuk, Heechul, Eunhyuk, Donghae and Siwon all own apartments there.

yap, but we all know that. there is a bunch of news about it

but the thing is: he said "we live in the same apartment" and then his mind frozen of a couple of seconds and tried to pretend he didn't say it

there is even a tweet making fun of donghae reaction (with google translate voice) after he noticed what he said:

harharplz.png harharplz.png harharplz.png

it don't make sense his reaction bc everyone knows they all are living in the same apartment building. like is not a national secret bro

i think he accidentally let it slip that he is living together with eunhyuk in the same apartment in not in 2 different apartments on the same building. that can explain his reaction
