Which male idols do you think are gay?

Recommended Posts

I'm not really in this conversation by just popping in to say that I am a black kpop fan and we actually talk about issues surrounding appropriation a lot. One of the only reasons I follow more SM groups than other companies is because SM has a lot of black people on payroll writing the music. I could tell you at least 30 songs from SM that were written by black people--because if a whole industry is going to appropriate black culture anyway, I would prefer black people make money off of it.

Alright you're intentionally misrepresenting what i'm saying so i'm kind of done here. I said there are no black people in kpop (obviously) the keyword there was people. I never said anything about a lack of black culture in kpop but showing culture is not the kind of representation we're talking about. But no black kpop stan is out here begging for a black kpop idol like you guys so desperately need a gay one.

Not begging for a black idol but I do pay attention to who writes the music for these idols.

I don't think people should succumb to pessimism, since there has been A LOT of change the past 10 years. No, it has not ended up in an idol coming out (yet), but to be blind to all the other progress that's been made is unwise and not fruitful.

Youtube and streaming services are LOUSY with South Korean LGBT people and couples, and that was not the case 2-3 years ago. It only needed one or two trailblazers and now youtube is full of SK LGBT content creators. I follow at least 4-5 gay men/couples currently. Then we have out gay men like Holland and MRSHLL, we have music videos that have gay themes or include LGBT people (made by artists, not idols, in all fairness). We've had a South Korean eSports player come out as bi. And then we have idols being openly supportive of LGBT and even being a fan of LGBT artists or LGBT themed entertainment.

A LOT has happened, even if no one has come out.

Also, ten years ago there was only in drama that had a gay couple/character and that was Life is Beautiful. All the others were boys thinking they might be gay because they fell in love with a girl dressed as a boy.

Then we got Reply 1997, which had a gay character even if it was one sided in 2012. There were also quite a few movies that year (Night Flight). That movie is pretty tame in the PDA sense but the violence was intense. I also think K.Will's video came out the same year.

Fast forward to 2016, we get the critically acclaimed The Handmaiden. It was through Amazon Studios so it was definitely a studio that also pretty much can do what it wants but still.

Now thanks to Web dramas we had several dramas just this year with gay characters as well as some on prime time TV. Netflix being Netflix can basically do whatever it wants and so Korean shows like Love Alarm showed how the app would out gay characters.

I think pop culture can do a lot, but I think one of the biggest driving forces in South Korea, like in the United States, is the military. And until some protections are established there, it will be hard to have open male idols due to the mandatory service that all  men must serve. I therefore think it would be more likely for a female idol to come out.

I want to watch this and I was until I realized one of the actors playing one of the gay characters in this died--most likely by suicide.

Yeah i think it's probably 1 in 10, but probably/maybe a lot closer stat for bisexuality-- but not much research on that end.

I think it's closer to 1 in 10 too. But that's the statistic for the general population. With that said, I do think the arts tend to attract more LGBT people in general. That stereotype exist for a reason. Keiynan Lonsdale (Love, Simon; TheFlash), an out actor in the U.S. originally from Austrailia, talked about how he went to a dance high school and a large majority of the male population WAS gay/bi and yet it was still hard for him to come out despite being in such an open artistic environment

This Chen news makes me think that times really are kind of changing. A member of an active boy group, a top idol, is in fact getting married. Although, the backlash is pretty high.

But it makes me think that if a top idol was to come out, it would be random and sudden. Like such and such idol has decided to have a commitment ceremony with longterm boyfriend so and so.

people might take me as an homophobic which i'm not but i have to say that if heechul is hiding his supposed relationship with gunhee or his homo/bisexuality we should try our best to respect that and his relationship with momo atm.

i'm not saying we should simply assume he's straight or whatever, but i fear... you can say i'm a coward for thinking like this but we already lost so many people to hate and online hate. i'm scared.

don't you remember the toxic comments from knetz saying "at least he's not gay". those are probably enough to terrorize him. heechul might look strong, but the harrassment against celebrities and against him is real. some say people wouldn't really care if he came out but we all know it's not the case. I'm not talking about anything exactly from this thread, but I see a lot of fans having  a hard time differentiating speculation from actually trying to out people.

This is why I try to stay pretty silent. I feel like people keep forgetting how much Heechul has been through this year and the effects that grief can have on a person. Sometimes it can make you latch on even harder to the people you do have left. I know that was what happened for me. I would constantly check in on people to make sure they hadn't died in their sleep. I would have panic attacks if someone didn't tell me they had made it home when they said they would and start picturing their horrible death.

I even agreed to relationships that I might would not have if it wasn't out of fear of their imminent death. Long story short, given the circumstances it wouldn't surprise me if it was real--but there are different definitions as to what real means.

 there was this interview

the way he reacts to some fanservice too. i hate the phrase “gay panic” but anyway

also apparently his super m teaser pictures were taken in a gay bar and he said it was his favorite photo shoot.

He also said him and Ten have the same ideal type. I mean, Jungwoo and Jaehyun seriously make him flustered. But he's honestly hard to read and like another poster said, sometimes it could just be like super submissive straight. He seems to have a fetish for being dominated and has repeatedly said he would like the other person to take control.

There is also that interview were Taeyong talks about how he wasn't rly interested in art but then he got a art teacher who he thought was handsome and he said he looked at him a lot and became more interested in the arts

and his lines from whiplash

"Ma mama says to meet a good girl
Mom, my tastes are very definite
I’m soft and have boyish emotions like a loser."

I know Taeil was asked to describe Taeyong he used dainty, must be treated like a princess. Yuta and Doyoung also said something similar but I can't remember what. All of them seemed to have applied pretty so-called or 'traditional' feminine labels to him though.

Do all of us here think that Ten is gay?

I didn't really get that vibe from him. He seems playful and a bit feminine - but in my country it is not unusual for male dancers to be slightly effeminate. THIS and they could be straight.

I feel like from NCT / WayV - Jungwoo, Hendery and Taeyong are probably not straight.

I think people assume we base someone bring of the LGBT community based on maaerisms and for the people I ping, that's not what I'm most likely to notice. It's their interest. With Ten, it's his standing of Frank Ocean and Troy Sivan. It's him saying that people call him a 'confident guy' when we all know that's not the actual phrase. Like he knows what he's called and acknowledges it. It's him saying stuff like he likes soft and sticky things in his mouth and making suggestive faces towards the camera. It's also the fact that he actively rejects hetero camera fan service and tries to shut it down when Lucas does it. Is him wearing this shirt that had all the queer identities on it at the end of the year stage in 2018. It's him naming the entire WayV project Rainbow V. İt's even the cryptic stuff he said about how the time away from the spotlight really helped him solidify his identity. Everyone knows he constantly lurks Twitter and he's fluent in English so I take that to mean a lot of what he does is on purpose. Not to mention him recommending Call Me By Your name to a fan and recommending songs on the soundtrack. It's the choreographer saying 'let's take it from the top' and Ten pointing to himself and calling himself a top. And yes, soñé of it is his mannerisms.

I think it's telling that him and Jung woo both prefer pretty and cute over handsome.

I know I'm even missing so much just in this.

Wait, Ten called himself a TOP?!

When has he ever been a top? I've always seen him as a power bottom.

He did. It's in the behind the scenes video for his Nicki Minaj choreography.

Theres been 2 issues that made me kinda 😬 yikes

This

And this

This has already been discussed. Lucas and Jung woo were impersonating each other. You can literally hear Jungwoo. He's also doing a lot of flexing while impersonating Lucas. Joe is it offensive if that's how someone is.

The second clip I'm pretty sure he's laughing at something that's happened or was said and happens to be looking down.

I'm so tired of shit being taken out of context. Especially these two monents.

If Lucas was as homophobic as people paint him to be, I doubt Jungwoo would have called him his best friend and Ten wouldn't be the hyung that he always went to for guidance pre debut.

He's heteronormative, but I don't think he's Homophobic.

I wasnt talking about the jungwoo one anyways just the one with him and ten and yangyang complaining about how ten sits it just kinda irked me. I dunno Lucas enough to conclude hes homophobic but he doesnt really appear gay friendly either, heteronomative as you said and a dash of toxic masculinity. I remember him saying he cant cry cause hes a man or a real man something like that and when an mc wanted to acknowledge wayvs male fans he basically shut it down saying nah we gotta focus on the girls. I mean it's all just a bit .........

I thought Yang Yang was talking about Ten on his bed. In other Vlives they constantly bicker bc Ten doesn't like Yang Yang on his bed in his street clothes. This time Ten is now on his bed. I think that was it initially and then it turns to omg when Ten stretches his leg across.

if it's from a Japanese interview, i think it was just translated that way because the Japanese language has gender-neutral pronouns (but please correct me if I'm wrong!! lol)

To be fair he answered a similar question before and said he hoped they wore boyish clothes so they could share a wardrobe

The video you showed, honestly it showed me nothing o.o? Do you have better video that defends your argument? Because I dont have strong impression of him, therefore would like to look with more neutral view!

So far he feels quite straight to me, tho like i said, i dont know him well

Are you discounting the post about his interest? I think an interest on queer artist, especially several of them, is valid. Not sure why there's just blatant dismissal based on 'feelings'. I usually feel out of someone is gay by dropping references to gay pop culture or gay interest to see if they pick up on it and 9/10 times it works.

I just feel like people are being down right dismissive over OP just because they have a 'feeling'.

Even for Holland case, he debut as a gay idol. So he did come out, but not in the sense of coming out to his existing fanbase. And he is not under any contractual obligation. It is still a brave thing to do, but frankly, the opportunity cost of coming out is arguably far greater for all other idols that already debut.

One other risk of coming out is the risk of people disregard the true talent of an artist and label them as "the gay one" instead. Being the first openly gay kpop idol was/is Holland brand - it does help him with the attention, but also limit him in many other sense.

Hong Seok Cheon was a great comedian with promising career in multiple entertainment areas before coming out. Now years after the TV ban, "being gay" has become his variety focus of many shows guest. It is sad because from few proper shows he has, his talent goes way beyond that.

I see a few mention coming out and leaving Korea. Leaving a country where you were born and raised is not that easy. It is like a last solution nobody wants to resort to.

P.S:

I cant believe I knew about this just now. Whoever brought in this concept is a legend.

They brought in the concept. Ten and WinWin choreographed the whole thing. It was a project that they did on their own.

What do y'all think about SM Entertainment and their ways to cover up any LGBT associated word ( "lesbian" from a video and "gay" from a teaser image ) , although I feel like SM has the most LGBT artists. They must be living in hell seeing how homophobic is the company

SM is confusing because they also clearly have some of the most out as you can be in a homophobic country idols. And let some of those most likely to be gay idols do a lot of gay things.

Doyoung himself said it, he knows more than anyone what Knetz are like and clearly he didn't care. He said it with his whole chest. Plenty of idols have said things that are supportive of minorities that resonate with LGBT folk, why should an actual gay man censor himself when Doyoung himself said it? I don't understand the logic...

I understand that SK is homophobic, and i'm sure Doyoung does too which is probably why he said it.

Plus, Doyoung's brother has played a gay character before. Not only that, Doyoung very much so said with his whole chest that Jaehyun flirts with and has a crush on his brother. And it didn't seem like he was talking about it in a homophobic way but more so in a eww why do you have to like MY BROTHER way. Find some other dude to crush on.

Exo kai

What about him? He's hard to read. Clearly has some very intense friendships with D.O. and Taemin. I don't think his fling with Jennie was fake though either. Krystal maybe. His public domain persona seems to be like really opposite of his personality though which seems to be very sensitive, reflective, and really shy according to pretty much all accounts.

I find Kai so impossible to get anything from. I don’t think he’s straight though. I believe that he had a relationship with Krystal more than Jennie. His friend group seems overwhelming not straight too, especially Taemin. I mean it says something if even your manager thinks you are dating and this is in Korea where the acknowledgement of gay relationships kind of fly under the radar for so many people.

Yeah. To me their managers thinking they were dating is pretty intense. And their whole like having to call each other every single say. The thing is though is that I'm not actually confident that Taemin is gay. I think it's a very codependent and intense relationship for sure, but not sure like to what extent.

To straight taeil believers I would like to ask how you make heterosexual sense of the fixation he used to have with winwin? I don't mean this in an accusatory way btw, I just genuinely can't wrap my head around him not being into guys after all that. But maybe that's me lmao

Didn't Doyoung insinuate in some radio show that Taeil and him even had a chat about Taeil's love of Win Win and it didn't sound like on a brotherly since but that Taeil was genuinely confused

What do you consider to be him queerbaiting?

I would like to know too because I don't see him queerbaiting at all really? I think his friendships with Taemin, D.O., and lately Mark seem really genuine. Him crying when one of them wins an award doesn't feel like acting. He has always been touchy with the first two especially and it didn't seem like baiting? Like just genuine this is my best friend whom I love dearly and we've been through a lot. He just seems to really keep the people he loves close. I'm not sure what you mean that he does that's "acting gay".

Unless you mean how he dresses but I'm pretty sure like stylist mostly put him in crop tops but I'm happy to see crop tops come back for men. They were big in the 90s.
