OMG following up on my last post Korean fans found this moment when JR called their DORM room "our room" which sure is interesting because they've made a whole deal out of emphasizing that Ren moved out into Minhyun's room..... and yet there's all these slip ups that imply they still live together (JR still calling Ren his roommate, JR complaining at Ren for using his shower, Ren is only ever seen posting in JR's room...and now this)

I guess this is kind of on topic of shipping, Minki has been liking Jren stuff on insta for like years, I think the most recent one was about them getting married. What do we do with the ones that just out there sailing their own ship?

 

the more nugu a group is, the more obvious they tend to be with actual relationships because they can get away with it. JRen before Nu'est got popular is similar to like, Wow & Byeongkwan from ACE now, where they very obviously ship themselves and are very likely actually dating, but nobody gives a shit. Nu'est was nugu as fuck for a long time, and there's a list of very suspicious receipts a mile long for those two....and most of it comes straight from the two of them. Pledis never pushed them much, it was BaekRen at the beginning, and these days there's lots of ARen. and the interesting thing is that JRen toned it down a LOT since they gained their popularity. the ship basically vanished, it's really not popular in the fandom (esp korean fandom) and they're almost always separated now anytime they have to pair up.

 

they're still suspicious af though (see the "our room" thing I posted the other day, or this fucking 22 minutes of date footage which is the only jren content pledis has blessed us with recently....there's plenty of other flirty moments too but nothing like the wild shit Ren used to post on insta back in the day lol)

How sad is this? Why is his 'body and heart' being 'oppressed'? He made the break from EXO, went back home and started his own agency. So what could be wrong? Mental health? Career not doing what he wants? And/or something else (sexuality?, ect)? Whatever it is I hope he recovers. He sounds as if he's in such a bleak place.

 

 

I wouldn't exactly call this "the latest" since it's from January this year...it's entirely possible that he was, is struggling with mental health issues (and he posted about Jonghyun a few times over the winter as well, since he's someone Tao looked up to a lot) but these days he actually seems to be doing pretty okay and happier. He went on tour this year and started putting out music again, which is something that always makes him happy, and he even opened up his own entertainment company with his own trainees who are competing on China's latest big elimination show. 

 

Anyways, that doesn't really have anything to do with anything gay lol, but I just wanted to kinda clear that up.

I was prowling Twitter and came across a thread that someone had put together re: K-pop's ingrained homophobia/s, SK's religious upbringings and the idol skinship culture. (Not sure how old that Sehun stuff is, my god Chanyeol or Chen (pic is v small) has got a 80s-style curly perm! And current Sehun seems confident and unflustered to my eyes. Actually a fight breaks out on the thread about it, with Sehun Is Gay people firing back. It's great for a laugh if nothing else.)

 

Thought people might like to chew it over for themselves and agree/disagree at will. There are positive mentions at the bottom of the thread for some old favs too.

honestly it's a good thing to talk about the homophobic things idols who most likely ARE gay have said. like even though it was mostly likely just defensive, Sehun shouldn't have treated the idea of a gay WGM relationship like it was something crazy. In the same way, people have criticized Heechul's brand of gay jokes as well, since the hetero general public could very easily take them as "ha ha yeah the gays sure are creepy and weird right!!"

 

the comment I have about the thread itself though is that the kpop world is most likely much gayer than this person seems to think it is.....the average idol is actually around openly gay stylists, backup dancers, ect constantly.....the way they're talking, it seems like they think most idols are completely cut off from the lgbt+ world which is far from true. also, I've only been into kpop for about 5 years but there's a clear HUGE change already these days. not just idols, but most young people in korea these days are becoming open minded much more quickly

 

also, some of the examples (cough, straykids "attending" pride) are really a stretch lol....there's plenty of even more supportive examples to use

I thought these two were interesting so I'll comment on them.

 

1st comment:

I think (supposing the tale about the nugu friend is true at all) he is really overselling it lol. 90% is an extraordinarily high number not to mention there is NO way he could ascertain how many gays there are anyway since being an idol isn't a magic portal to the lives of All other idols. If he isn't gay himself how would have any special insight into who is gay or not?

 

2nd comment:

I find this one very interesting and maybe even believable bc it actually reflects reality. There is so much fakery and facade in the entertainment industry and similarly to the West male celebs in general are expected by default to be straight to appeal to wide swaths of the female population. It also puts into perspective just how much do we really KNOW about idols?

 

We all have that cynical side brain that often jumps out with "they're just acting they're not really this type of person at all, it's just for cameras" but at the risk of sounding naive, I don't genuinely think a lot of idols are this utterly rehearsed robot programmed by companies to act certain ways at all times.

Just from this thread we have seen many examples of non stereotypical behavior time and again from certain idols who clearly push the envelope as to what is "expected of idols"

 

oh for sure the nugu friend, if they exist, was exaggerating ahaha but I'm certain the number of gay idols is still pretty high. I've mentioned here before that a friend told me once that he heard around 40 of the p101 guys were gay, and that kind of statistic seems more likely.

 

and I agree that what we see of idols, just like any other human being, is a mix of the image they want to show the world and their true feelings. there's a lot that's fake or that we don't know, but there's also a lot that shows through the cracks, especially if they've been in the business for a long time. I think you can get a pretty good reading on someone if you follow them for long enough.

Sungwoon: straight. the token straight of his gay friend group

Minhyun: bi but 100% in love with Junsu, no one else matters to him

Seongwoo: gay, with the classic gay backstory of "all the girls in uni were in love with him but he never dated anyone how weird??"

Jaehwan: straight

Daniel: bi. he's clearly dated girls but I think he'd also happily date a guy too, there's been plenty of times he's shown interest

Jihoon: panicked gay, so deep in the closet. save him

Woojin: straight

Jinyoung: bi/gay, I really think he's interested in guys but there's not a lot to go off for girls besides his old ioi fanboying

Daehwi: gayest little gay baby

Guanlin: bi/gay, his old insta and crushes on boys like Jihoon and Wooseok are suspicious for sure

Thankyou for the thoughts- I mostly agree with the who's straight/LGBTQ in this list- still the way you wrote it made me cracking up especially the Jihoon/Daehwi parts XD.

Panicked gay- LOL, I suggest nice orgasm with a guy to cure the panic attack. Don't try to attempt orgasm with a girl if you're panicking gay- it wouldn't miraculously turn you into a hetero, instead you'd turn into a self-hating gay and there is baby-scare too. LOL

 

And Daehwi is the sweetest gayest baby ever, I agree. He'd make a perfect sugar baby if he ever like that kind of dynamic.

 

Edit. Minhyun is in love with Junsu? DBSK Junsu? I think Junsu is straight tho. Poor guy- no girlfriend ever and now this hopeless crush. He surely must have long list of interested suitors tho- male and female- so I won't worry much for him XD.

and I can't seem to find a clip but the story of how they became close is cute as heck, from Wanna One Go Ep 2 (~12 minutes in?)

 

There's a bunch of little things I remember but it's been so long lol. What I mentioned about Ong was a story from a classmate back near produce, there's also the kinda suspicious late night wine dates Ong and Daniel go out on (I know they're a crazy popular ship, but that's the one thing that makes me raise my eyebrows.) and Guanlin's instagram has been mentioned in this thread for sure if you search, he posted male celebs a couple of times gushing that they were handsome lol. The rest of my thoughts I can't really give specific moments for, it's more of a general feeling of how they act around guys or girls

Hmm I don't know, I personally think they're just mates- though I did write about my hunch of Daniel not being 100% straight honestly I still on the fence about him most of the time. I did see him as someone who wouldn't care about gender or sexuality if he likes someone- he strikes me as open-minded kind of person so if he likes you, he likes you.

I'm on the fence about Ong- but indeed the story about him from his classmate seems suspicious- though I wouldn't bank on it much- a lot of asian kids are used to never date until high school or in some cases until HS graduation- especially when they have strict parents who forbid dating for the sake of focusing to school grades. Especially if the kids are book-smart types, or champions in several activities like piano or ballet or sports, or they enrolled to prestigious private schools where tuition can be sky high and competitions for school ranks almost the same with national final exam ranks. Or sometimes, some asian parents just forbid dating until the kids turn 18.

But I think their ship is kinda one of the most popular in that fandom yeah.

 

I'm not convinced they're a thing or anything, just that some of the things they do are suspicious. two gays can be sus together without being in a relationship lol

 

also, idk where you're getting your ideas that "a lot" of asian kids don't date in high school??? because hell even my elementary school students are "dating" each other here in Korea lmao. the dating culture is a huge thing here. not dating in high school when you're a popular, good-looking person would already raise some eyebrows, and not dating in university like Ong is even more suspicious.

 

school and parents do not keep kids from dating at all, lol. in fact I think it's one of the ways that kids escape from all the pressure here. if a kid wants to date, they'll find a way

I know Vernon went to watch Moonlight together with his mom, and I've heard rumors that her facebook posts were very liberal. idk if anyone ever mentioned she was specifically pro-lgbt but I wouldn't be surprised if she was.

 

I'm not sure if there's a lot of idols who are out to their parents though, even the very obvious ones from the older generations.....according to my lgbt friends here in korea, it's unfortunately very very common to just never say anything to your parents if you can avoid it. Same with some friends, even, even if you're very close to them, or even if your friends might suspect you're not straight, you still might never directly come out to them. But most of the time they often will tell just a few people who will support them, whether it's just one family member or a couple of friends or something like that.

 

 

if you remember Eunki from p101/Rainz, I have a feeling he might have come out at some point because he had a particularly bad relationship with his father....either that or his dad just really suspects he's gay and is super homophobic. His dad has been against him dancing and becoming an idol since he was in high school, and I'm sure he doesn't support Eunki's current occupation as a beauty youtuber either....but Eunki does seem close with his older brother, he was in one of his videos and it was super cute. his brother is a model, and if he's in the industry i don't think he'd be shocked by Eunki haha so I hope he's supportive ;;

did you read the whole thing? She wasn't saying she did it mistakenly as if she didn't know, she meant the whole decision was a mistake. Her ex girlfriend at the time apparently convinced her they could get married that way. 

I think it's possible that her and Wonho were dating during just a weird questioning stage in their lives, or it's possible that Wonho was actually protecting her. I don't think we know enough (and it doesn't really matter in the long run, the point is just that we always have known wonho to be lgbt-friendly)

Quoting a funny comments on Knowing Brothers to fit an agenda is odd. That is a show made full of jokes - the same show when the guests and hosts basically exaggerated and made fun of each other. 

Just because it's a joke doesn't mean it's not harmful. Heechul might not have meant anything when he talks about younger girls or participates in fake flirting for games or whatever, but him doing all that with very young, sometimes minor girls that he likes on TV only encourages other creepy old men to feel justified in perving after girls that young themselves. 

I want to believe that his relationship with Momo is fine and he is very kind and protective of women like people say he is. I even agree he could be bi and possibly broke up with Gunhee. It's not them dating that makes me angry, it's what he does on a broader scale that has me upset.
