I've never followed ZE:A so I don't know anything about him but in my mind, everyone is straight by default until proven otherwise.

 

I've been reading people's comments on Hyungsik and I can't believe I'm the only one so far who doesn't find him that handsome. He ain't unfortunate looking but he's not someone I'd give a second look at.

I can only speak for myself and what I can personally attest to is that I find nothing wrong with having this mindset.

The point is that that kind of mindset basically means that you think that "straight" is the default human setting, which is incorrect and damaging. If you're going to assume anything, assume "unknown".

 

I don't really see how it could be damaging especially if you're not ignorant or homophobic.

 

Some people get surprised if they happen to find out someone is gay and that's about it. Nothing damaging there.

The point is that "straight" is not the default human setting, and if you think that it is then the next logical step is to think that anything other than straight is abnormal, which is in fact incredibly damaging. And even if you yourself by some twisted bastardization of logic don't think that not being straight is abnormal even though you think straight is the default, if you behave like it is then others will get the impression that it is too, which is also damaging.

 

Being surprised at finding out that somebody who you thought was straight is actually gay is light years away from assuming everybody is straight until proven otherwise. They're barely even in the same fucking ballpark.

It is not me who is claiming that if someone isn't straight by default, then they are abnormal. It is you. It is you who is using that word, it is you who's coming up with your own interpretation. It is you coming who is claiming that the next step is automatically being abnormal if you're anything else but the default.

 

I actually do think being straight is the default human setting given the ratio of a straight person to someone who is LGBT and the ability to reproduce but I also believe that being LGBT is a natural occurence. I plainly differentiate the 2 based on their attractions not as "one is normal and the other weird/abnormal. I view them as colors not something like birth defects which I believe is how a lot of other people see it. The idea about it being abnormal is all just you Hanryu. We are obviously a minority by a large margin compared to straight people and many people, if not, everyone has been raised in a heteronormative society so there's hardly a possibility that people are going to assume a guy is gay if he's not effeminate. Your colleagues are most likely to tease you in a joking manner if you're getting a little close to someone of the opposite sex. People aren't going to bother thinking up anything "suspicious" between 2 male friends or 2 female friends unless they notice anything "convincing enough". I don't see how it's damaging in this situation.

I think there are fans like that in both the Korean and International kpop fandoms so I don't agree that one of the fandoms is more delulu than the other. They're pretty much the same for me.

 

You can go visit a korean kpop site and you'll see comments like "he's straight" or "he's lucky". You go to allkpop, you can see similar comments as well.

I have heard that Key has the least number of fangirls comparing with the other SHINee members.

But whatever they know, they hide this information.That's what you guys fail to understand imo. It can be no news in SHINee fandom and among the official fanclub members, but they don't find it necessary to go on every site and write comments about him being gay.

You don't have to be a Shawol to be able to judge or comment on someone's sexuality so it's not much of a difference whether we use k-netizens or k-shawols as an example. This thread is already a good example of the kind of discussions that take place on a kpop site given that there are many non-Shawols here who share their opinion on Key's sexuality.

Devoted korean fans know almost everything about their idol's relationship. 

Jeez, even in Russian SHINee fandom when I asked in private whether Taemin was gay some fans answered "It's not him, it's Key. He even stays overnight at his boyfriend's dorm".

They just don't talk to strangers. Koreans are even much more reserved. And every fan is ready to protect his/her bias. Why are you suprised? Or you can't take the fact that they stay by his side despite him being gay? It is not all about sex, I think.

It has to be. The comments and likes on his photos are from people he knows in real life, and he's friends with SM employees including SHINee's manager, the owner of Drunken Salon, that Joyrich guy's personal account, Yoppy Yoshida (who he just spent his birthday with) his old friends from Daegu, other Bonnie and Clyde castmembers etc etc. They wouldn't continue to interact with him if it was a fake account.

 

Plus the account's url contains "bumkey" but was made before his instagram with the same name. Netizens probably know about idols having facebook accounts but don't discuss it because they're mostly set to private.
