In most of the English speaking word it's still actively used as a slur by older generations, and in some areas by the younger generations as well. The word is on par with "faggot" and carries some really negative feelings associated with it for a lot of GLBT people, especially older gay men and those of us who grew up in areas where it's still actively used as a slur.
