modern music has become way too generic?

ok it was a hot debate between me and my older sister over the holidays

I was ranting about how Shape of you sounds generic as fuck and I'm salty that Divid has been more successful than X. And she told that music nows days in general has became way too generic, in the 90s and early 2000s genre were very distinct and you could tell them apart like, there were RnB singers, Pop singers and Rock bands but now adays everything is blended and it's a hot mess. In her opinion this is the main reason why there's no longer any kind of originality in music anymore (yes she's very dramatic) because everyone is trying to have a hit song instead of release a good *interest music genre* song

I rolled my eye at this tbh I totally disagree because I feel like creating music without being restrained by a genre is actually more interesting and can give more unique sounds instead of having the same instruments in every song and the same kind of structure to every song. And btw I retorted that there're is still musicians out there who try to be original, and some gems had came out last year.

and that's when she dropped on me that it was vey hypocritical of me a kpop fan to say something like. It kinda rubbed me the wrong way that she said that but I just shrugged and let it go.

TBH when I was young I was one of those music elitist that doesn't listen to mainstream and "commercial" music

I slowly grow out of that phase and I don't really care anymore if a song is good I'll listen to it however I can't help but feel a little guilty for liking songs that allegedly been ripped off other songs

I'm so frustrated right now because my english is way too poor for me to properly voice what I want to say

but I hope you got the point anyways, what's your take on this?

I think most issues of plagiarism comes from the producer trying to meet deadlines, especially when it's the case of intros or certain melodies popping up in two songs that are otherwise unrelated.

There's still a lot of originality in all areas of music. Pop music has always been about following the trends and building upon them, if people want something different it's up to them to look for it.

the main issue i have with pop music in general is the trend hopping - every year there's a hit song and then 50 people try to make a similar song and hope it becomes half as successful (it sometimes works) whether it's american or korean producers, they're all guilty of ripping each other off  getting inspired by each other

its just embarrassing to blatantly rip off a song in this day and age... if you really wanted that melody just pay for the fucking sample or go back to the drawing board... labels can spend thousands of dollars on stages and outfits im sure they can come up with money to pay for samples..

Common structures and familiar melodies are like the foundation of pop music since like forever, the challenge for producers is to find new ways of arranging or packaging a set of melodies into a song that makes in impact in pop culture. Usually they can't and its much easier and more profitable to simply follow current trends in music or reuse an old melody from another catchy pop song to make another catchy pop song.

Personally, i really dont have a problem with sampling anymore when it comes to pop songs. I even find it cool to find parts or melodies of songs that i liked before in newer songs. I mean, inspiration doesn't easily come up from thin air just give credit when credit is due.
