Paradise Kiss, Nana, Kuragehime, Moyashimon, Genshiken and Tatakau Shisho: The Book of Bantorra are a few of my all time favorite series. Occult Academy, Psycho Pass, Shiki, Ano Hana and  Natsuyuki Rendezvous are a few series that have left quite a strong impression on me and are definitely favorites.

I have to admit I usually don't like movies that try to compress a good few hours worth of anime into 160 or so minutes. With Evangelion it's even more of a problem because the little details of the show are gold (their emotional states  of the characters being the main thing).

Anyway i've only checked out You Are (Not) Alone and it was nice to see some classic scenes given a new lick of pain but, the original series + End of Evangelion are still the definitive versions to see.

I understand that It's hard to get all the details in a theatrical feature film but I think they did the best they could with the format that they could. I I'm sort of interested int the films on a few levels now; to start with I agreed with you that it lacked detail and certainly the first film stuck to the series in characters and story loosely at least, but now that the story is going in a completely different direction and so are the characters I am intrigued as to what they will do with them. Plus you can't really argue with the fantastic quality of the films art style.

There are many good animes out there but I'm often dissapointed in them at the end of the day. Usually due to them being predictable or just plain stupid. Anyway, here is my top 5 anime of all time. In no real order I guess.

Berserk

Full Metal Alchemist (both)

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai

Tengen Toppa: Gurren Lagann

Now and then, Here and There
