i can't really say much on this issue because the government is monitoring the internet and bringing in any locals that say anything against the new law, regardless if they're overseas so i'm just stay on the sidelines here because i don't want anything to happen to me... just felt the need to share this because it's quite.... well

GENEVA, April 17:
The United Nations human rights office has criticised Brunei’s planned introduction of the death penalty for a raft of new offences, as part of a shift to harsh Islamic punishments in the oil-rich sultanate.

“We are deeply concerned about the revised penal code in Brunei Darussalam, due to come into force later this month, which stipulates the death penalty for numerous offences,†said Rupert Colville, spokesman for the UN high commissioner for human rights.

He told reporters these offences include rape, adultery, sodomy, extramarital sexual relations for Muslims, but also crimes such as robbery and murder.

The death sentence could also be imposed for defamation of the Prophet Mohammed, insulting any verses of the Koran and Hadith, blasphemy, and declaring oneself a prophet or non-Muslim, he said.

“Application of the death penalty for such a broad range of offences contravenes international law,†he added.

Brunei has not carried out any executions since 1957, but Colville said that rather than adding new capital crimes to its books, the sultanate should be working to abolish the death penalty outright.

Brunei’s all-powerful Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah announced last October that the country would phase in Islamic syariah law punishments such as flogging and death by stoning.

The new criminal code, expected to enter into force on April 22, also introduces stoning to death as the specific method of execution for rape, adultery, sodomy and extramarital sexual relations.

Colville said that international law classified stoning as “torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishmentâ€, meaning it is banned under global human rights treaties.

UN studies have shown that women are more likely to be sentenced to death by stoning, due to entrenched discrimination and stereotyping in the justice system, he noted.

Criminalising consensual sex between adults, let alone applying the death penalty for it, breaches a series of rights, while the new code also violates freedom of religion, opinion and expression, Colville added.

Brunei practices a more conservative form of Islam than neighbouring Malaysia and Indonesia, banning the sale and public consumption of alcohol and closely restricting other religions.

The sultan has advocated the strengthening of Islam in the country, against what he calls potentially harmful outside influences, recently calling his Islamic monarchy a “firewall†against globalisation.

Officials have previously said syariah cases would require an extremely high burden of proof and judges would have wide discretion applying it.

apart from this new law, nearly everything else about the country is great... No taxes, free healthcare, free education and the fact that oil is cheaper per litre than water is quite a biggie

Human rights > cheap gas, ibr

Did this reporter reported things right or not? Cos what brunei is trying to do is enforcing hudud or shariah law but some those punishment are not included in the law.

And i wouldn't mind if rapists and murderers get sentence tho.... especially those that tortured their victim.

If the country is a Muslim country and the majority of people are Muslims why is it such a big problem , cuz willingly they wouldn't do these things and so these " punishments" wouldn't have to be applied , plus if Brunei haven't signed that human rights treaty they can't be charged infront of the International court of justic

lol this completely goes against the quran, disgraceful

What's that?

as i said, anyone who dares go against the law or speak up will get brought into court

the sultan has complete control over his country

there's talk about implementing hudud in one state in malaysia since long ago but it was opposed and not accepted by many

Its the holy book of the muslims, like the bible for Christians

WoW is that so , you learn something new everyday from the internet ,jk

Ok but on a serious note I must've sounded so ignorant that you thought I was asking about the Qur'an I was actually asking about what was against the Qur'an from their new law since I don't know what's it as a whole

Is this a serious question?

Dude did you seriously think I don't know what the Qur'an is I mean c'mon

what reason does the Sultan want to stone gays?

being gay is against islam so i'd assume it's because of that, but what's ironic is that one of his son's is avidly known to be gay... But the sultan isn't really the one to be pointing fingers at because its mainly his advisors and Muftis who are putting this law into place

ok, next question would this law be "socially acceptable" or would this be a "bite your tongue" for the common folk?
