Do you personally know anyone in the military?

My dad, my brother, and my brother in law are all currently serving or retired. They all did tours in Iraq/Afghanistan and they are all screwed up. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. As a pacifist I am grateful to be married to someone who has no interest in military service because I could not, would not, put myself in that position .

Not close friends, but a family friend did airforce ROTC and is currently in officer training. Lots of other people I knew in high school did ROTC to pursue engineering degrees, and some people at my church are veterans. Grandparents and great uncles all served in WWII, but that was the norm. Somehow my father and uncle managed to escape the draft for Vietnam, though.

When I was in elementary school one of my classmates had a dad who was a military, don't know what rank he held but he even lived in a reserved for their families (think the military provide all that stuff from them or something like that).

Then a couple of years ago I had to work in a military (air force) facility so I got to know plenty of them. The whole thing was under the command of a some colonels; or lieutenant colonel, don't remember the exact rank. So my impression is that they were more relaxed and chilled than I had expected although it was only rough at the beginning when they didn't know me, and the rest of people working with me, as they were a bit suspicious and would always be a couple of soldiers following us around, lol.

As for military service is mandatory for men where I live but I was exempt of doing it because I was studying at that time so I never got to experience that but it seems to be something pretty light and you just receive pretty basic training and would do exercise most of the time.

P.S. I also know some guys who went to militarized schools and a classmate studied medicine in the navy and even got a pretty decent rank there but he says the physical requirements are though.
