Was there ever a time T-ara>2ne1?

I hear it A looot that TAra was "so close to becoming NGG before their scandal happened"... that seems like quite the hyperbole to me? I was around in Kpop back then btw, it never seemed much question around 2011-ish that it was 1. SNSD 2. 2NE1? Tara had hit songs --Roly Poly, ..um..--but? Your thoughts?

This is coming from the perspective of a Western fan btw. Might make a difference

Did kpop fans back then even have a good handle on what was considered popular in SK? Back then everyone just talked out their asses about who was most popular.

lol idk. I dont recall the obsession with NGG or PAKs and stuff back then

if anything, there were those monthly?(or

Was it y early) girlgroup charts. Those were from SK fans perspective right

t-ara had bigger hits than 2ne1 since 2011 then 2013 happened and everyone was t-ara who?

hits? Like plural? I know Roly Poly was a smash, but what else? Did Lovey Dovey do that well? In comparison to IATB and Lonely

T-ARA hit it very big with their song Bo Peep Bo Peep (the dance/song was the trend) and had continuous hits such as roly poly, lovey dovey, and etc. and then the scandal happened. Yes, they were very big. Jiyeon was a visual that many netizens said she was prettier/on par with Yoona (on the rank with Weekly Idol, idols voted Jiyeon as the top visual) and Hyomin was popular variety wise with Invincible Youth, Eunjung was in Dream High which alot of top idols came from (2PM, IU, Suzy, Kim Soohyun(actor), etc.. Thats all I remember haha. But yeah, they were really big before the scandal happened, I still dont understand why the company decided to add more members...(I may be wrong with some of this information, this is just from what I remember from back then)

thats the default answer im trying to get some elaboration on lol. When in the timeline exactly?

in 2011 i am the best sold 3,5 million, roly poly 4 million

in 2012 lovey dovey sold 3,7 million, i love you 2,7 million

2ne1 is more popular internationally though

but I'm pretty sure t-ara had more cfs & appeared on more variety shows so

Lovey Dovey was like the most downloaded song midway through 2012 it only takes Gangnam Style and their scandal to stop them and i’m pretty sure if the scandal didn’t happen Day by Day and Sexy Love would probably destroy the charts considering Day by Day was first on music charts on its release day

No cluuue. lmao sorry.

I ask because when I first got into kpop, everyone told me that 2NE1 was like, a hair away from stealing NGG title away from SNSD. But now I don't think that was actually true at all. Not saying that they weren't popular, but people really acted like it was over for everyone else. I'm pretty sure T-ara songs did better than 2NE1 songs sales wise tho

omg Gangnam Style happened around then? Lol they seem so distant

I remember ppl boycotting Sexy Love and its YT dislikes being unreal

Was it during Day by Day promos that it happened?

Yes. They were much more popular with the public than 2NE1 in Korea in 2011 and early 2012. T-ara had Roly Poly (SOTY 2011) and Cry Cry in 2011 as well as Lovey Dovey in 2012. But Korea trusts 2NE1's music which is why 2NE1 came out on top of the charts when T-ara, 2NE1 and Suju came back on the same day in 2012. Ifans downplay T-ara's success since 2NE1 was much more popular internationally.

I searched and it wasn't on the same day exactly but around the same time. My 2009-2012 kpop memories are kinda muddy now.
