A question for those with astigmatism...

my brother has astigmatism and he's always struggled with making eye contact with people

it's not a matter of him being shy or anything, he's pretty confident and outgoing

i was talking to him about it today and he was explaining how when he tries to hold eye contact with people he just can't

he said he beings to feel nauseous and gets this sensation in his eyes that forces him to look away

i have no idea if this is possibly related to his astigmatism...

he's going to meet with his optometrist soon, but i'm curious to see if anyone else with astigmatism deals with the same thing

when he was a kid and before we realized he had astigmatism he always used to look sideways when talking to someone, hence why i think the two may be connected

I do find it physically uncomfortable to stare a person in the eyes as we are talking. It takes immense amount of concentration to keep my eyes on their face and I often end up spacing out without turning my sight away.

I never connected it to astigmatism though. I was diagnosed quite late in my life, after being considered short sighted for many years. I got new glasses, failed to adapt to them and ended up getting a laser correction instead. Astigmatism gone, problems with keeping an eye contact still there. Personally, I just blame spending too much time in front of the computer and not giving my eyes enough practice with other focus distances.
