Yellow Magic Orchestra (sometimes referred to as just YMO) is a three-member electronic band. They are often considered influential innovators in the field of popular electronic music. They contributed to the development of synthpop, ambient house, electronica, electro, contemporary J-Pop, house, techno, and hip-hop music. YMO were pioneers in their use of sythesizersm samplers, sequencers, drum machies, computers, and digital recording technology in popular music, during a time when these things were seen as novelties. The band was considered "ahead of their time" for anticipating the global trend towards drum machines and sampling, and for having anticipated the "eletropop boom" of the 1980s, their "pro-technological view point", their use of video game sounds and bleeps, and for experimenting heavily with computers and electronic instruments. The bands is famous not only in Japan, but worldwide.

Ohh, Firecracker... The song that led to Mariah's meltdown...

The track (Loverboy) was subject to controversy, following reports that Jennifer Lopez and Tommy Mottola (Carey's ex-husband) stole the idea of sampling the singer's original planned sample, Yellow Magic Orchestra's "Firecracker", over a month after Carey had signed for it. Since Carey's Glitter was to be released over a month after Lopez's album, she changed the song's melody to sample from "Candy" instead. Controversy ensued following its release; Carey was hospitalized for severe mental and physical exhaustion, following poorly received television appearances involving the song and album.

Jennifer used the sample in I'm Real:
