The sudden drop in sales for mid tier boy groups

the sad thing is that even the temporary groups are going to disband and the members  will go back to groups that won't sell too much either

This is why I consider survival shows a danger to kpop

Those groups are unlikely to regain what they lost since other temporary groups are in the making and the cycle continues

they lost their stans to pd101 related groups. those groups added together sold over 1mil albums. those fans had to come from somewhere. the bigger groups like exo, bts, 17 and got7 are selling on par with their previous releases because they have a bigger international fanbase. the ones that rely on korean fans are seeing the sharper decline.

Those groups are more established tho so their fans are less fickle. EXO debuted in 2012, BTS in 2013, GOT7 in 2014 and 17 in 2015. SF9, Astro, Victon, KNK etc all debuted in 2016. The only older group in the list is B.A.P but they have their own unique issues... unsure.png

yea that's true but imo they also lost fans to w1/jbj/etc but its less noticeable since those groups have wayy more chinese/japanese/other country fans

Most are rookie groups, not mid tier? Idk the classification for mid tier tho. But i agree after produce 101 all we see is w1, jbj, nu’est, and all the groups affiliated with it. It almost seems like these days you won’t be popular if you’re not going to survival show...

I don't think any of those groups qualify for "mid tier" though? To me mid-tier are groups that sell well physically but also have good or decent digital presence and more public recognition, so the likes of Seventeen, NU'EST, BTOB, Block B etc. Astro is the only one out those groups that could be considered sort of mid tier since they have good album sales + charted in the top 100 + have a very popular member but the rest are still nugu or "rising" at best. BAP used to be mid-tier at their prime too but not anymore.

But yeah, I think broduce related groups definitely took some fans from those groups. In Astro's case I think it could be due to the change in concepts too. Lots of fans apparently didn't like the change from fresh/cute concept to something more mature/sensual.
