Green Willow 1,638
Sometimes when me and my older/oldest brother try to talk to our mother about adult issues she'll brush us off because we aren't "real" women and men. Because apparently you must eff your life up sufficiently well (oh and ofc have sex, you're never an adult until you have some V or P) to be a real adult Or when someone says they don't smoke or drink and they decide to later on in life people say "Oh, so you're grown up now!" ?????? I was a child beforehand???? I don't get it and it makes me mad. I don't need to wreck up my life with the wrong people/friends just because you and a slew of other adults did, and that doesn't discount me being one either. At least give a reasonable reason why I'm not a "real woman", I wouldn't mind. These are just BS reasons. For me, being a "real woman/man" is being mature, responsible, dependable and all that good stuff. What about you? Do you think sex/bad choices/etc = "zomg welcome to adulthood"? B612 22,399
I don't care anymore, I can't bother becoming an adult by these wrecked standards, so I'm a happy child

Juliantina 149
Or the "you aren't a real woman until you have kids" like wtf, honestly but i agree op, it's more of being independent and responsible, good features
PromiscuousBunny 3,686
Bad choices/loss of innocence = gaining experiences (both good or bad) so that's probably why your mom is dismissing you. Also a lot of those things are considered "rites of passages". Your mom really shouldn't be so dismissive, she's denying you respect and the chance to become an adult. WenSuelRene 5,625
Well, no one has ever said that to me so I personally can't relate. Really tho, I see where you're coming from. I personally don't get why some people think you need to do certain things in order to be deemed a "real" adult

Also a lot of those things are considered "rites of passages". Your mom really shouldn't be so dismissive, she's denying you respect and the chance to become an adult. but if i LOOK at said bad choices and choose to avoid them...i'm still not being an adult? yes there are some things about sex i will never know until the "time" comes, but that doesn't mean i can't use my eyes and see how people use it wrongfully. same for choices. i understand my mother for her dismissiveness, but the reasons at their roots are very weak. Watchman 304
Not my mom, but a couple of girls from my school were chatting that they want a "real man"? And I was like, what is a real man to them? Is it someone to provide you an easy life? Wow, you're so outdated. And they seriously looked me down because, apparently, I'm not a real man to them. Girl, I'm older than you, and even if I was not, this kind of mentality makes you a unpleasant person. And I agree w/ all you said pd.
