So, shall we talk about RM's lyrics to Champion?

Don't get me wrong, the entire song has great lyrics, but I'd like to appreciate Namjoon's lyrics, that he most likely wrote himself in a language that he taught himself and it sounds. so. good.

This verses, specifically, I think were very good:

"What's wrong with the life of a passenger
If somebody gotta be then I'mma be the messenger
I'm just too young don't know what to believe in
But too young, you know, not to be living

I will stay, I will wait and I'll fall like a king
Even though I can forever ever be a king
I will marry this goddamn world by my own
And put my self on the goddamn ring"

The bolded part, I really liked the word play, how he adapted Patrick's original verse. I really the message, as well as how he rapped more aggressively. Idk much about rap, tbh, but it sounded really good imo. It matched the beat perfectly and it grew with the song. I'm very pleased and very proud of our leader laugh.png

Edit: Here's his entire part, if you haven't seen it yet.

[Verse 1: RM]
Yo, should I be a star? Baby, I think I already are
Not a saint, not that great, feel like I was born a car
In '94, the world started me and I've been driving
Sometimes a man just can't open his car, and
Ain't gotta be somebody, be anybody
Rather be anybody than live in a dead body
If you can't see me then find a helicopter
In the night sky, shine like a star

[Verse 4: RM]

Have you ever felt how hard it is to be an anybody
To be living, to be breathing, not choosing a dead body
Remember, the man told me that this life is a party
Yeah, all the glory's so short you should put away the garbages
Normal ain't normal, ordinary is a luxury
People say "woo, pessimism" why do you all on me?
If you wanna understand, you stand under
This shit is vital, respect to the mothers and fathers
What's wrong with the life of a passenger
If somebody gotta be then I'mma be the messenger
I'm just too young don't know what to believe in
But too young, you know, not to be living
I will stay, I will wait and I'll fall like a king
Even though I can forever ever be a king
I will marry this goddamn world by my own
And put my self on the goddamn ring

I will stay, I will wait and I'll fall like a king

Even though I can forever ever be a king

I think he actually said,

"I will stay, I will wait and I'll fight like a king,

Even though I can't forever ever be a king"

Meaning he'll keep on pushing through and fighting his way to the top, never giving up even though success or happiness doesn't last forever and people fall faster than they rise.

But these are my favourite lines from him. He did so well here!

He went hard on the second verse, it was truly a bless :rlytearpls:

I'm basking in every sentence  RM took no prisoners, he is truly amazing, lol I can't even pick a favourite line, as all of them make a point or lead to one, no fillers here :dave:

One of all of them that hit me, "People say "woo, pessimism" why do you all on me?

If you wanna understand, you stand under", like yes RM come for them :har:

I really like how his verses connected to the original song.

Though, I don't think a few of them made much sense. Either I am not familiar with the words, or it's just a tiny bit awkward. Still, it's amazing to me how he's able to write that, and rhyme so nicely when English is a language that he learnt all by himself. That's just incredible. Not to mention he managed to accomplish this in their hectic schedule.

I might be too quick to judge though, since I haven't listened to the full song yet though, because of my stupid time zone I still need to wait for an hour.

It’s very him, relevant to his life rn, and fits well with the message of the song. The scope is large, the idea of being an anybody to a somebody and everything in between. Line 3 and the final two are really popping out at me rn.

Another meaningful collab that I can see giving a lot of people comfort.

I really love the song, it has been on loop for me since it was available

In general, the lyrics of Champion are very good and Namjoon went further

He's no joke, he really sounds great rapping in english or korean.

Maybe it's his tone of voice? bareum, bareum, diction diction??

On his lyrics I really liked his wordplay, he's getting so good  in such a short time.. that it feels surreal rlytearpls.png rlytearpls.png rlytearpls.png

His english lyrics finally give me a bigger chance to play detective and try to find all the things hidden in there, connect the dots and get the imagery.

Perhaps say which parts were weird to you and we could try to help smile.png Or you meant not make sense in connection to the original?

Such as normal ain’t normal, ordinary is a luxury. And the passenger and messenger rhyme. As well as throw away the garbages part because glory is short (this part I understand, I just don’t like the word garbages because it stood out like a sore thumb among the other more poetic words).

But I haven’t listened to the full song yet, so my opinion may fully change after the beat is dropped

I think the 2nd verse is definitely the most interesting

Even though I can forever ever be a king
I will marry this goddamn world by my own
And put my self on the goddamn ring"

i think this was my favorite

this is the first time he's used some of these words - king, marry, messenger

i wonder if those are his new key words and he'll start sprinkling them in raps in 2018 to reach a bigger meaning (like he always does) now that his 2017 keywords like selfish have run their course. He still used 'ordinary' here, like in Not Today tho, but didn't use the exact same phrasing. He also brought back up 'mothers and fathers'/parents which he mentioned this year in multiple songs (Change and Always off the top of my head)

anyway, just some ramblings

Ah the whole understand and under-stand thing again rlytearpls.png  I've always loved that word play from What am I to you, but I think I prefer "If you want to understand, you stand under". His second verse is so good warstarplz.png

There are 3 options here. Be a somebody, an anybody, or a dead body. Part of what he’s saying, I think, is that there’s value in being an ordinary person even if you aren’t a “somebody.†You’re living life, which is hard, instead of giving up. Life is short (and maybe being a somebody or famous can be hard) so appreciate the normal while you have it.

Then we have passenger vs. messenger, which are loosely linked to anybody versus somebody. I think the passenger line is asking what’s wrong with sitting in the passenger seat (or maybe being an anybody), and it could link back to the car metaphor from verse 1. But he feels driven to be a messenger—have something to say—because someone has to. He doesn’t know what his message is though, because he’s young and doesn’t know what he believes in. So he’ll fight to figure it out, and in the end will believe in himself.

Hmmm maybe that’s the connection. I think the normal one makes more sense now but I still don’t get the messenger part. Idk I think it’s just not super intuitive for me? But I just listened to the full song and man his English rap is good. That confidence and rhythm on point

And do you know how much I enjoy car metaphors? They're absolutely incredible, not just in Namjoon's case, but in general: you can refer to so many things using them.

Okay, I'm just freaking about Namjoon writing two verses in English, he's improved a lot. I think I like the remix more than the original song lyrics-wise, maybe I'm just biased haha, Joon's lyrics go well with the rest of the song.
